Carly Smithson Rocks With We Are The Fallen

Posted Tue Jun 23, 2009 1:34pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

I confess when Carly Smithson first appeared on American Idol season 7, I very vocally expressed my doubts regarding whether or not she belonged on such a show at all. I admittedly harbored a lot of skepticism over her teen-pop past (as Carly Hennessy) and former major-label deal, as well as the huge amount of hype she received from the judges from the get-go. But eventually...I could not deny THOSE PIPES. Carly outsang much of her competition last season, powering her way through multi-octave blitzkriegs like Heart's "Crazy On You" and "Alone," the Beatles' "Come Together," Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse Of The Heart," Queen's "The Show Must Go On," and "Jesus Christ Superstar"--some of THE most difficult songs to tackle in the Idol songbook.

Clearly this was a woman who was born to belt out rock 'n' roll at the tip-top of her lungs, not warble nice songs on a nice family TV show. Perhaps that's why Carly, a seeming frontrunner last year, only made it to sixth place. I naturally assumed she would capitalize on her television fame and rush-release a solo album, and when she didn't, I wondered if she'd become yet another Idol footnote. But I realize now that, after several false starts in her long career, she was just taking her time, waiting for the right opportunity.

And now, Carly has found the ideal outlet for her talents: We Are The Fallen, a new cranked-to-11 hard rock band featuring original Evanescence members Ben Moody, Rocky Gray, and John LeCompt. The band made their live debut yesterday at a press conference at Hollywood's SIR Studios, performing two LOUD stadium-rockers that instantly turned my eardrums to mush: their debut single "Bury Me Alive" plus, much to the surprise of me and the intimate industry crowd, "Going Under" from Evanescence's huge-selling album Fallen.

Yes, this is the music Carly is supposed to make, true to herself. No more hiding her sleeve tattoos (or tattoo-faced husband Todd, who attended the showcase with Carly's mom) from the public for fear of spooking out conservative Idol viewers. No more having to tone down her metal-diva vocals for Country Night. As Carly said in an enthusiastic statement about her new band, which is definitely now her full-time occupation and not a side-project: "I am finally home. As an artist I have never been happier. Creatively, musically, visually, and on a comedic level, we are united and together on the same page. We are a family."

On a comedic level, Carly's bond with her new family was apparent in an impromptu interview I conducted after their showcase. Still giggling over some inside joke about "holes" mentioned in a previous interview (seriously, don't ask) and a reference another interviewer made to Carly's past as a child-actress spokesgirl for Denny's sausage (which prompted many more Beavis-like snickers), We Are The Fallen's camaraderie was amusingly evident, and their interview was a total free-for-all from the moment Ben Moody hilariously explained why he actually never watches American Idol.

Here's the band talking about their future plans, sausage, Idol stigma, how Carly has grown since her pop-music debut at the tender age of 14, and...Constantine. Yes, Constantine. Watch and enjoy:

And below are two clips ("Bury Me Alive" and "Going Under") from the group's live debut, with Carly in all her sooty-eyed, black-leathered glory. Her band may be called We Are The Fallen, but they seem to be headed nowhere but up.

Amazing. I didn't like her on AI, but I like her now. It seems like shes really found the place to just sing her heart out, instead of just singing songs that shes not passionate about just to get popular.

I love Ben Moody and am thrilled to see him back making great music!

Either Carly is very awkward in interviews or she was quite [profane]y towards you and very defensive about the album she made when she was younger.

The songs are really great. I hope they have a lot of success if for no other reason that I'm a huge fan of Ben Moody!

I didn't take Carly's comment as rude. I guess she just want to distance herself form that part of her career. Ben cracked me up though. Wonder what Constnatine would think!?

i miss Amy Lee :(

Ben looks like such a hard ass but he is hilarious. Carly is adorable and a great singer so I'm glad that she hooked up with these guys. I think it'll be a good fit.

Amy Lee can't sing.

i looove the new single "bury me".
but i honestly don't think they should've performed "going under". everybody knows that that's amy lee's song even though ben moody wrote it, amy pretty much owns that.
if "we are the fallen" wants to be their own band and not be associated with evanescence, they don't need to be "covering" evanescence songs.

Doesn't Ben find it a little disconcerting performing Going Under, when the lyrics were written by Amy Lee about him abusing her?

Carly vacaaaaaaaaaa!!!!
Amy lee perfeita :]

I can't believe someone said in the comments that Carly came off as rude when in fact this interviewer has been less than nice when blogging about Carly when she was on Idol in 08. I thought the interviewer was very rude, not everyone DOES watch American Idol. Some people have lives. And why would she even bring up Carlys record from when she was 14? She was a girl, she is a women now and ready to rock!!!

14. Lyndsey Parker -
Jasper, come on now. You know I was joking. I did find it hard to believe that in 8 years Ben had never watched a single episode of Idol and was teasing him about that. I am certainly glad I did, as it elicited a really funny response from Ben, joking about Constantine. That stuff was priceless.

As I said, openly, in this blog, I did have a lot of doubts about Carly last season. It's not a secret. But my blog here is praising, saying she has finally found her fit: not in pop, not on a TV show, but in a hard rock band. I agree with comment # 1 here--not a fan of her on the show, fan of her when she is in her element.

And I did not think I was being rude, nor did I think carly was being rude. The interview was just fun and silly.

What people don't understand is that We Are the Fallen have all the rights in the world to perform Evanescence songs. Why did Ben Moody and co leave the band? Because of musical direction differences to Amy Lee. Amy Lee, evident on The Open Door, wanted to change the band's music style. These guys didn't. Why should they give up the songs they love and had a huge part in writing, performing and eventually caused Evanescence to skyrocket to fame? The whole point is that We Are the Fallen is supposed to take off where Evanescence left off after Fallen. It's the real deal.

The interviewer was like one of those annoying girls out of a high school morning show. Nothing like looking completely incompetent and jumping on the bandwagon.

The responses from the brand were great though. You can add me to the list of people that don't watch American Idol. Never have and probably never will.

I love Evanescence, mostly their stuff from Fallen. I think the new band is great, I listened to Bury Me Alive for 3 hours straight when it came out. I also think Carly's version of Going Under is great.

Thanks Lindsay for introducing me to this band. I love Evanescence, but couldn't be happier that Ben Moody and the boys have moved on. If Bury Me Alive is any indication, the two bands won't sound anything alike now. I am happy to have them both on my iPod (especially if We Are The Fallen continue giving out free downloads. :D)

yuck! sorry Carly but I don't dig it.

So everybody knows, I am obsessed with Evanescecne and Amy Lee, so this may sound a little mean...

Personally I think that Ben, John, and Rocky wanted to get revenge on Amy so they joined together with that little Carly chick. I mean, their okay, but if you go to YouTube and watch "The making of Bury Me Alive", you'll see that her vioce live sounds little like the actual song. It seems to me that during pre-production, they made Carly's voice sound more like Amy's, even though there's no comparision of who is better. And though Carly may LIKE
