Michael Sarver: On The Scene At The Idols' Tour Rehearsals

Posted Thu Jun 25, 2009 10:55am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Today marks the kickoff of my day-by-day rollout of all the other on-the-scene interviews I conducted at the Idols Live Tour rehearsal, starting with contestant number 10, Michael Sarver, through third-placer Danny Gokey.

Up first is Sarver. I admit he was not my favorite on the show, as he wasn't really on American Idol long enough for me to get a vibe from him regarding what he was all about musically. However, I must say, when he returned to Idol for the season 8 finale, he surprised me. His cute country performance with Megan Joy and funnyman-turned-bluegrass-artist Steve Martin was, for me, an unexpected highlight of the finale; I felt it was the perfect counterpoint to the show's bigger, brasher, more pyro-laden productions. I know some viewers didn't enjoy that number as much as I did, but I think that's just because the whole Steve Martin thing threw them off: People assumed it was a comedy routine, and were therefore too busy waiting for the (non-existent) punchline to realize how endearing the performance truly was.

After that moment, I naturally expected that Michael would go into country music. But when I spoke to him at rehearsals, he revealed that he doesn't want to limit himself to just one genre on his future album. He also discussed singing with Steve Martin, his excitement about the tour, and even rumors of Idol cast infighting. (He cheerfully insisted that--despite gossip in the blogosphere to the contrary--there is NO beef between any of the Idols. And I have to say, they all seemed to be getting along famously at their rehearsal.)

Here's how our quite delightful chat went. Up next...Megan Joy!

Hi LP - you shoulda done the interviews with Kris and Adam in this room. The acoustics are so much better. I can actually hear what Sarver is saying. The "white" interview room sounds like the bottom of a 55 gallon drum.

He's more well-spoken than I expected. Nice job LP.

Lyndsey, What a pleasant surprise. He is far more articulate than I expected and more knowledgable about music. I'll be honest, I thought he was a bit of a meathead before watching this. Impressed. Thank you for being a true professional journalist and not only getting past your own initial feelings about Michael but sharing this interview with all of us. It might cause a few of us to stay in our seats during his set on the tour rather than making a previously planned trip to the merch table.
