The Saddest 'SYTYCD' Elimination Episode Ever

Posted Thu Jun 25, 2009 10:11pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

I will keep this So You Think You Can Dance elimination episode recap brief because, quite frankly, the shocking news of Michael Jackson's death today has made everything else--including my favorite summer show that I'm usually so excited to view every week--seem very uninteresting. I would rather watch the continuing coverage of the King Of Pop's passing than pretty much anything else on television right now.

That being said, Michael Jackson WAS one of the greatest dancers of all time, and there's no doubt that he influenced everyone in the SYTYCD top 16, even the ballroom and salsa specialists. In fact, tonight main judge Nigel Lythgoe delivered a lovely eulogy-type speech remembering Michael (along with Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon, two other icons who died this week), revealing that Jackson's "Black & White" video was an inspiration for So You Think You Can Dance itself. Skip to the 4:06 mark below to watch:

It was very classy and gentlemanly of Nigel to speak about today's tragedy (before airing a snippet of MJ's classic "Thriller" video), as it was the right thing to do instead of just jumping straight to the results. Hostess Cat Deeley also said that SYTYCD's sister show, American Idol, will rerun its Michael Jackson Night top 13 episode next week as an additional tribute--another announcement that set the tone for the evening.

So of course, this was probably THE saddest results episode in the series' history, not because of who got eliminated--none of the three bottom couples tonight were real surprises--but because the proceedings were entirely overshadowed by today's depressing news. But eventually, Cat and the judges got down to the task at hand.

The bottom three couples were, unshockingly, Jonathan & Karla (Jonathan really struggled with their smooth hip-hop routine last night); Vitolio & Asuka (Vitolio is great in my opinion, and I loved this duo's rock 'n' roll jazz dance yesterday, but Asuka has somehow never been able to connect with the audience); and Jason & Caitlin (their performance was strong overall last night, but Jason made a few errors that the judges were quick to point out).

So after all six dancers soloed for survival, the judges decided to eliminate Asuka and Jonathan, as I pretty much expected. I wasn't hugely disappointed to see either contestant go--and even if I had been, the Jackson news would have put such disappointment into perspective. But the growing bond between Asuka and Vitolio was nice to see, so I felt a little sorry for him; I'm sure losing his partner was rough, especially on such an intensely emotional night.

However, I am looking forward to seeing how the newly coupled-off Vitolio and Karla will mesh next week. And on that note...I shall return to watching MJ tribute footage.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson, a true legend of dance.

Yeah, Michael Jackson's death shocked everyone. On the results, I liked Jonathan and Asuka, but wasn't surprised to see them leave.

I read all these blogs and it doesn't get any easier for me to deal with...with all the turmoil that has plagued him and his family you would think that the insensitive jerks wouldn't try to be the first to comment something so mean about something so sad. We have lost a great, whether these hateful people want to recognize it or not, Michael Jackson has in some way influenced if not them their favorite artist. He will forever live through his music his family and undoubtedly his fans. I am glad that shows feel it necessary to stop mid way through programming to acknowledge the loss of a great spirit soul and artist. I, too cannot stop watching the continued coverage. It is a sad day and everyone will remember where they were when they heard this news. We won't stop until we get enough, R.I.P MJ

Jeff, no. Just no. And perhaps this: grow some class and respect the dead.

Sorry to see both Johnathan and Asuka leave.

I can't believe the guy who made the first comment!!!! It was so ignorant, and ridiculous. Listen Jeff, you can have your opinion, but to make a remark like that is disgusting. The man died!!! He was son. A father to his children. Michael Jackson whether you like him or not, made a huge impact on pop music, and dancing. I don't care for his music, but I do respect the fact that he is one talented individual. RIP Michael. You were one true talent.

yp_jeff_brighton~ you should be ashamed of yourself. You can't tell me for one minute that there isn't a Michael Jackson song that uplifted you; made you feel good and made you want to dance your *** off. He wasn't a child molester. He was just a victim of circumstance, a victim of abuse from his own childhood and only wanted other children to enjoy being "children" from which he was so quickly ripped away from at such a young age so that his so called father could reap the benefits of his success. Just grow-up and stop being so naive. So he was eccentric. Big deal. We all are in our own way. Your comment was very disturbing. One last thing - if he was such a threat to children, why did so many parents allow their children to spend evenings with him...they were just setting him up so they could get a boat-load of cash from this man. And look now, all the stress from it has killed him. Well, you sound happy about it, but I can tell you, the majority of this world is not. There will NEVER be another M.J., just as there will never be another Elvis. Enough said. Just grow-up.

Michael Jackson will forever be known for unlimited contributions to music, dance and moreover, and possibly more importantly, to encouraging and inspiring millions of individuals to sing, dance and perform. He enriched our lives in more ways than one . . . may his memory be served in respect for all that he did and will continue to do.

boy some of the people on here are saying terrible remarks we all should try our best to have respect for his family.
michael was a son, father to three children, had such a wonderful talent that has inspired so many to music
no matter what you think he has done in his life please
be respectful to his mother & family.

i'm shocked that some people have the nerve to submit such negative and hateful comments in this time of grief. it can be argued that michael changed pop music just like elvis changed rock and roll. he was truly a legend, and his music will live on. if you can not see that clearly then you are not a fan of music. just because he made mistakes in his life, or his lifestyle doesn't agree with yours doesn't mean you can't appreciate what he has done to our culture. please keep your snide comments to yourself.

RIP Michael In earlier ages of my life I would listen to his music and still at the age of 27 I appreciate his talent. We all will miss you Michael, but your music lives on for the future. And to anybody that feels they wish to dredge up any of Michael's past mistakes please keep it in mind that there's a family and a world in mourning right now and though Michael has made mistakes we to have made some mistakes of our own. Be honored to be a part of this not his passing but his life, his talent and now a memory that will carry on for the upcoming generations to enjoy. There is only one thing left to say here and that is: Fly peter pan fly you will never be forgotten.

This is sad and it is a process to take away a life of creative prophetic wonder from a society that was ungrateful enough to allow him to be taken apart by the hateful and greedy which had to be deeply rooted among the racial shadows. A society that no longer deserved his presence in this shrinking world. I hope he has risen to a culture worthy of his giving.

19. Leticia Queen -
Michael used his musical talents in many of his songs and music videos to open our eyes and hearts to what’s going on around us and abroad. In hope to make a change and difference of how we treat each other and not to judge in hope to change humanities eyes to see that its time to make changes for the positive because we cant keep going on like this, war, hate, jealousy, lies, all contributing to hurt, pain, and self destruction. R.I.P. MICHAEL WILL YOU WILL ALWAYS BE LOVED AND GREATLY MISSED
