Is Kevin Skinner The New Susan Boyle?

Posted Wed Jul 1, 2009 11:57am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

It's a tried-and-true, patented TV formula that was honed to perfection this past season on Britain's Got Talent: A contestant comes on and is painted out to be some sort of pathetic outcast or misfit. The vicious live audience gets ready to heckle. The judges roll their eyes and prematurely position their hands over their respective red-X buzzers. But then the auditioner opens his/her mouth and proves he/she really does, um, got talent. The crowd subsequently explodes out of a combination of both guilt and joy, and the back-pedaling judges fawn all over the poor misunderstood contestant, who has instantly morphed from punchline to media-darling frontrunner.

The most obvious example of this phenomenon is Britain's Got Talent's Susan Boyle, who elicited pitying chuckles when she first tried out on that show and talked about "never being kissed" and living, spinster-like, in a small Scottish town with her cat Pebbles. But of course, Susan had the last laugh once she finally sang. Her now-historical performance even inspired Simon Cowell to apologize for doubting her.

And now it seems the producers of Simon's Stateside version of the televised talent competition, America's Got Talent, are hoping to create similar underdog magic with Kentucky chicken farmer Kevin Skinner, who auditioned at the end of AGT last night. Sharon Osbourne tittered at the 35-year-old hick's thick, straight-outta-Deliverance accent; city-slicker Londoner Piers Morgan looked haughty and disdainful; and the audience laughed at (not with) Kevin as he made cornball cliché comments about "not being good at math." But then the mood in the auditorium changed when Kevin finally performed:

Yes, Kevin was better than would be expected under normal circumstances...but given how his audition was set up (it was pimped all throughout the episode with between-commercial "coming up" teasers), and knowing the Boyle-esque formula behind shows like this, I wasn't personally surprised that Kevin actually had some talent as a country troubadour. I saw right through this reality-TV shtick, and I suspect so did many other viewers. There was no real surprise here.

To be honest, I think the judges laid the praise on WAY too thick in their attempt to create a feelgood "moment." Yes, Kevin did a solid job, but the way David Hasselhoff was raving, you would have thought he'd just witnessed the resurrection of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams combined. Come on, Kevin wasn't THAT amazing. And it was a little too soon to start predicting he'll win this entire competition.

However, Kevin Skinner did seem like a nice guy with a dream, and his teary-eyed reaction upon making it through to the Vegas round was indeed a nice moment (nicer than his performance, actually). So I just hope AGT's powers-that-be won't manipulate Kevin too much as they set out to presumably manufacture another Boyle-style, triumph-of-the-spirit sensation. Because we all know how that backfired for Susan in the end.

I was greatly move by Kevin and I hope he will win this contest

there may be as good singers out there but its not only about the voice. its about what you put in the song, and kevin put it all and more, and this is a lot more than good. he is truly a magnificent person, and I think alltogether he is more than THAT good. maybe the author is a bit jelaous or doesnt see the whole picture of kevin.

5. Airek -
Yes, he WAS that good. Believe it or not, not everyone has seen, or even heard of Susan Boyle. The moment that was created last night was historical in my opinion, and I feel the author of this article should learn let some emotions come to be. If after the performance and everyone's reactions last night didn't make you feel a little happiness, then you were putting on a front so you could write this terrible, terrible article.

6. Lyndsey Parker -
Airek, my point was the manipulation of the editing. This show (and others) are getting cliche with the whole fakeout angle: that is, trying to dupe the audience into thinking someone is going to be bad, trying to make them look silly, then creating an element of "surprise" when the performer in fact can sing. It's happened ever since Clay Aiken auditioned for Idol and reached its zenith with Boyle. I felt the presentation of Skinner was transparent and manipulative.

I thought Kevin was good but need to see more of him before I get all hyped about him. We'll see how he does in Vegas. I also wonder if he writes his own songs. We'll see.

I have watched it several times, and I am from Ky. I want to download it on my ipod. It was very good. He will become an awesome country singer, and has a good chance of winning the competition.

Lyndsey, i really think that the point of your article was then the wrong point. For me it doesn't even matter if they intentionally makes this "fakeout" - they dont do nothing bad with it - they either amplify the funny part or the surprise element, and why shouldn't they? That doesn't change what Kevin really did or what he is as a person. His singing alone may not be extremely good, but he as a person and a singer together is really extremely good. People like him deserve respect just because they are modest and honest, and he put all his heart and emotion in his performance - and because of all that hype should be around him. I think you should pay more respect to him and his tremendous performance.

Hype is a part of television, but there is no denying that Kevin is a true talent. You cannot learn or teach what he did on that stage in front of millions. It has to come from within.
A star is born, good luck Kevin!

Lyndsey Parker,

That I can, and do absolutely agree with you on. The editing was terrific - for what it was supposed to accomplish. I think it was the right approach because after looking at him, listening to him speak, and seeing his choice of clothes, everyone in America, including the judges, saw him the same way: a joke audition.

Having watched all episodes of America's Got Talent so far this year, I will say that this type of editing is getting old. They do it several times a show before every commercial break. Doing it for a Kevin Skinner was a perfect use of this technique, but they should really give it a rest.

I can't wait to see more of Kevin.

11. Jean -
Lyndsey you may have a point on the editing of Kevin's audition, (if fact a friend attended the Houston auditions and there was a lot of fake audience reaction given) BUT Kevin Skinner HAS TALENT and a BEAUTIFUL singing voice. He is also a HUMBLE man who wants a career and deserves to have a chance. Last year Donald Braswell was on this show and bad remarks were given on him by the judges and the audience and that was uncalled for as Donald Braswell, like Kevin has a BEAUTIFUL voice, (a different kind of vocal). People that appear on this show are not there for producers etc to mess up their personalities and talent but are there to be heard by America and be judged by the same,(after all we are the ones who buy the music). Kevin Skinner is someone we WANT to hear.

Please, Kevin is Kevin and Susan is Susan. Stop this journalistic game and these ridiculous analyses. Look, listen and that's enough. Kevin is very good and a special man. Why to compare everything. Jealousy perhaps or unhappy reality of what we became.

13. PamelaS -
I only wish to meet this man someday. He is steadfast in the face of diversity and it was true an honor that we all saw him after the bashing the judges and public gave him before he sang. A lesser man would have walked off stage. I still get goosebumps when I see him, listen to him and my only regret is that he is married!....or this would be one Mainer that would pursue the gentle genuine soul that he is!!

14. Chuck L -
This man was THAT good! Your problem is, you let the t.v. marketing end of the performance sway your judgement. His performance was every bit as good as any country singer I've heard. Taking away from a persons performance and not giving due credit because you don't like the SHTICK. That just plain sucks.

15. PamM -
Kevin Skinner was/is GREAT......I hope to see more of him.He is a true sincere guy who looks like he's had a hard road , needs and well deserves ONLY THE BEST..........Keep going Kevin ..don't forget your roots.

16. Tyler -
Lyndsey, you were absolutely right. Kevin Skinner is good, but nowhere near deserving of all of this praise. Both Susan and Kevin, while good, look many times better than they are through how they were set up. Humanity reacts more positively to the same positive event if it comes as a total surprise. I wasn't at all surprised, so I can see Kevin for what he truly is -- a second-rate Branson act.

17. Pat -
That was a very cynical article. I wish Kevin well as he has talent. I hope he doesn't have the same problems Susan Boyle did because of too much publicity. Someone should give him a chance at a career whether he wins" America Has Talent"or not. He seems to need a break and deserves it .
It takes some pluck to appear on that program.

18. Pauline -
I thought that he was absolutely wonderful. In this day when there is way too much flash and arrogance, he is the real article.

I was born in Mayfield, KY and grew up on a tobacco farm nearby. I wrote this article about Kevin Skinner and the town.

I don't understand the Kevin Skinner phenomena at all. He seems likle a nice giy, but he sings off key with a very klimited range. He belongs singing in a country bar, NOT Vegas.
