'SYTYCD' Results: Ade Calls It A Day

Posted Fri Jul 31, 2009 1:37am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, I'm just going to come out and say it, sugarcoating-free: On tonight's So You Think You Can Dance results episode, Ade went home instead of Evan, and I'm NOT happy about this.

This is not to say Evan isn't extremely talented. Of course he is. He wouldn't have gotten this far if he wasn't. But at this late stage in the game, I thought it was becoming obvious that--despite his tremendous growth throughout the season--Evan still wasn't quite up to par with the remaining two males in the top six, Brandon and Ade. At least I thought it was becoming obvious. But apparently much of America--the viewers who vote for "America's FAVORITE dancer," as opposed to America's BEST dancer--did not see this. And so Ade and his magical hair-pick will not be in the finale next week, as he was voted off tonight, along with his original dancer partner, Melissa.

I'm sure there are other SYTYCD fans out there who are also perplexed by Evan's winning streak this season (at this point, he's the only finalist who's never once been in the bottom three). But I'm a little less perplexed when I think about how all these shows--not just SYTYCD, but also American Idol, America's Got Talent, and such--work. At the heart of such competitive talent shows is the concept that anyone can triumph over adversity and reach any goal, no matter how lofty, just with perseverance, a good attitude, and a whole lot of hard work. Whether it's Kris Allen going from "dark horse" to American Idol champ, Danny Gokey becoming an Idol darling less than a year after his young wife's tragic death, or dowdy outcast Susan Boyle becoming an overnight superstar adored by millions, the underdog story arc always resonates with viewers and voters.

And Evan's story on SYTYCD certainly follows such an arc. He auditioned before, but didn't make the top 20. He auditioned this season with his brother, Ryan, and then sadly had to be separated from him when Ryan didn't make it past Vegas Week. He's had to overcome certain dancing disadvantages--his short stature, his lack of versatility compared to some other contestants, his specialty style being somewhat old-fashioned and supposedly unpopular, his (according to Nigel) "droopy eyelids." And through it all he's shown a great deal of progress and for the most part handled whatever's been thrown at him, even hip-hop, with workmanlike skill and a smile, often surpassing the judges' low expectations. This makes him extremely likable, and on shows like this, likability is sometimes more important than danceability.

But that being said, I do hope at next week's finale it's Brandon's underdog story arc--from being chewed out by nasty judge Mia Michaels all throughout Vegas Week to ultimately winning Mia over once he made the top 10--that will sway viewers when they pick up the phone and vote. I can accept Evan making it to the finale, and I think no matter what he's got a great future ahead of him--but I don't want him to win over Brandon (or Kayla or Jeanine).

As for the girl who went home tonight, like I mentioned a few paragraphs ago, it was Melissa. I'm sure many SYTYCD conspiracy theorists out there will argue that she was cursed by her partner Evan this week--just as Janette supposedly was last week, when she was paired with Evan in two harshly critiqued routines and was subsequently voted off while Evan shockingly stayed. I admit such a conspiracy theory even crossed my own mind tonight. But in the end, I do think it was Melissa's time to go, as sad as her exit was.

But it was not all sad news tonight. On a happy note, several dancers returned from last season to revisit their recently Emmy-nominated routines, and this sort of made up for the lack of classic routines (and the puzzling inclusion of Katie Holmes) on last week's 100th episode. Two of my all-time favorite SYTYCD numbers--Katee and Twitch's "door dance" and Chelsea and Mark's "traveling businessman" routine--were reprised tonight, and I was so happy about this that it almost compensated for Ade's elimination.

And these Emmy-nominated dances also reminded me of how Nigel Lythgoe predicted last week that Ade and Melissa's Tyce Diorio-choreographed "cancer dance" would earn an Emmy nomination in 2010. Melissa and Ade definitely made their mark on SYTYCD history with that routine, so they can leave the show with their heads held high--and I do think we'll be seeing these two again, doing the "cancer dance," on every SYTYCD clip show and best-of special for seasons to come. And maybe even on next year's Emmys.

And on that note, I'll leave you with this cute interview I shot with Ade and Melissa the night they danced that routine, on the 99th episode last week. At the end of the interview, I told them I was certain they'd make it to the 101st episode, and I was right about that. Too bad Ade didn't make it to the 102nd...

i am so glad they brought those dances back.. of course something happened to cable, because when i went to watch it this morning, half of the "traveleing businessman" dance was all garbled! :-(

i am not surprised evan made it in.. this is america's "favorite" dancer after all and he's very "likeable"..in simon's words..

but no matter what, i love this show! lol

I fiqured it would be Melissa and Ade going home and I was right. It is ironic that they are the pair who did the brillant cancer routine. But the timing was right for both to go. The other two girls (and Jeannette) were more diverse. As for Ade, he has been good, but very inconsistent. I personally would have preferred Jason to Evan in the finals, but I have no problem with the choice of Evan over Ade.

I still wish they would bring back the Board Room routine, it's still the best one.

I am hoping Brandon wins, although two years ago Danny looked like a sure winner after he went through the same sassing from the judges that Brandon received this year, so who knows. I do agree though that it should not be Evan.

Ok, I am so sad Ade is gone... He was great. I think you are right Lyndsey that it may be about overcoming adversity, but I think that is still unfair. We saw a lot about Evan during Vegas week, we saw a lot of Brandon vagas week...

Did we see anything about Ade? Nope. Oh and we saw a lot about Kayla too. So I do think the producers are up to something. Same with AI and Danny, ugh, he was terrible...

So I understand why Evan made it but I personally am not happy about it. I am going to vote for Jeanine like crazy!!!!

Evan is a great solo dancer; I think he falters with a partner, though. I picture him in more Gene Kelly type roles with a lamppost or something inanimate, LOL!

Loved watching the dances from last season, but I thought they all looked a little rough around the edges with the exception of the "Bleeding Love" routing. Wish they'd had a few minutes to say what they were all doing now.

I'm not surprised about Evan being picked at all. I'm okay with it. While Ade is clearly the superior dancer as far as all the partnerships go, Evan's personality has been shining since day one. He's charming, he's likeable, and he's "prettier" than Ade.
That being said, I still hope Brandon wins :-)

I would hesitate to say that the producers were conspiring for this. It's pretty simple - if someone's more camera friendly and personable, the people who run the show will naturally want to give him more air time. It's just "okay, this guy's more interesting, let's film him instead of that other guy." It's just how the business works.

I was only sad when Kupono and Janette left.

Both Evan and Ade are great dancers, but neither is at the level of Brandon and Kupono (or Jason for that matter). I doubt Ade could have won, and hope Evan does not.

The biggest loss to the show was Janette. She should have made the top four, and could have won.

Ugh, about Evan. For the love of Bob Fosse! Evan is turning into a knat for me on that show...I keep brushing him away, but he keeps coming back!

I thought they would go home as well. I would have sent Brandon home instead of Ada. I'm for Jeanine or Evan to win. Evan may not be the best technically but his presence and personality make up for so much and I wouldn't be surprised if he wins. Like you said the Susan Boyle or Kris Allen factor. The Breast cancer dance was not all that specatcular. If they didn't say it was for Cancer no one would have cried or cared.

9. Dave M -
When it came down to Evan and Ade. I knew that it would be Ade going home. Evan has the Benji factor going for him. Not that he is as good or versitile as Benji, but he has that something that people like. I wouldn't be suprized if he wins it all. I have to agree with nigel on the personality issue. No one this season has shown the personality of previous years, Benji, Twitch, Joshua, travis and Sabra all had lots of personality and it shouwed. this year they just aren't showing as much.

10. Amy -
I'm not surprised at all that Evan is still around. Personality always means more than sheer ability. Remember Will last season? The judges always raved about him and he was almost always in the bottom. Why? He was boring. I could almost never remember his routines after they ended. He was a great dancer but that will only get you so far.

11. Lyndsey Parker -
I agree with you, Amy, about Will, but Ade had LOTS of personality! It's just such a close race this year.

12. Rosey -
Ok you could look at it as the producers wanted shock value by keeping Evan. However why not look at it this way. I do not deny that Ade and Brandon are extremely talented and given the couples perfomances Evan was the one the weaker dancers. However the way Little C went on and on about happy he was about Ade and Brandon being in a dance together...and then there was Evan who was keeping up. WHAT HELL WAS THAT? In that group number I felt that Evan was just as good as either those two and he should have gotten equal praise. Evan performances aren't the best but they aren't worst either. The judges kept reminding us of how short he is, his droopy eyelids, he doesn't have the look. They might as well pin a sign on him saying "too ugly to look at get off my stage". I compare this in some ways to Carly Smithson. The judges were down her because she wasn't giving enough, the media was down on her because she was from Ireland, her tatoos, she had record deal once, and yet people still voted for her, but the second Simon gave her an amazing review she was voted off. I'm just say if just have said a few good things about Evan's performances maybe he would have been gone by now.Because America loves rooting for the underdog.

13. -
Evan has the "huge" student and alumni contingent from Illinois Wesleyan University (where he is a BFA Music Theatre student) voting for him. And I use the word "huge" mockingly, as the University only has 2,000 students. (I can say it mockingly - but lovingly - because, once upon a time in the mid-'90s I was one of those 2,000 students.)

Aside from that, he honestly just is a likable, all-American guy who was an early favorite last season who made it much farther this year, obviously. He's kinda been an underdog (but a talented one, not a Sanjaya) and I'm constantly amazed at the judges' backhanded compliments along the lines of, "I thought this would be a total train wreck for you, but you did a very respectable job!" that pop up EVERY WEEK.

Did I want to like him outright just because we have the IWU connection? Yes. But I have never let that cloud my judgment. If I didn't think he did a spectacular job on a particular week, I didn't vote for him. (As many times as I might have...)

Lyndsey, in case you haven't seen it, Entertainment Weekly named SYTYCD Season Finale #1 on its Top 10 List for this week. It's nice to see my favorite reality show getting some good press.

15. Cicely -
I like Evan but I think he should have left a few weeks ago. He's just not as good as the other dancers. I was disappointed that Ade didn't make it to the finale. Maybe if we'd seen more of him in the earlier weeks...

But it was great seeing more of the past routines. Twitch and Katee's door routine is my favorite ever, I think.

16. Patricia -
It could be anyone of the Dancer's win at this point. So much talent. My favorite is still Kayla she doesn't have alot of the personality Wow factor some of the other dancers do, but she is young and can develope that aspect. When Kayla is dancing...she is awesome and all about commitment and showmanship.
Good Luck to the final four!
