Simon Cowell Is Pitchy, Dog

Posted Sun Aug 2, 2009 4:51pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Oh my. TMZ has just uncovered archival video footage of Simon Cowell's first television appearance, as "Wonderdog" on the U.K. music program Top Of The Pops. And if I'm being honest, it is dreadful.

Apparently, back in 1982, a German artist named Harry Thumann produced a song called "Ruff Mix" that sampled dog-barks, much like other animal-sounds classics by, say, the Jingle Cats. Young music producer Simon acquired the rights to the novelty song, released it under the artist name "Wonderdog," and to promote this project even went on British TV dressed in a furry canine costume.

This was the result...by a man who later became one of the highest-paid men in the music business:

Ooh, that's ruff.

Now, obviously this was not an attempt at a serious singing career, and although Simon's actual mouth is not visible in the clip above, I'd venture to guess his lip-synching skills were no worse than Paula Abdul's back in the day. But he's going to have a VERY hard time living this one down, considering how many times he's criticized contestants' clothing (because dog suits are not exactly flattering), song choices (because "Ruff Mix" is way worse than "Dream On"), or "amusement park"-style performances (because Wonderdog would be right at home at a county fair).

So I suggest from now on, every time Simon is exceptionally insulting to an American Idol contestant, the target of his wrath start barking the Wonderdog song back at him. Because that would be even more awesome than Megan Joy's "Rockin' Robin" birdcall.

I also suggest Randy Jackson stop using the word "dawg," immediately.

I am ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thank you for posting the link to your blog in a tweet. I LOVE YOU for being able to get a copy of this. Maybe you should send him a copy of the video with a note stating you are willing to interview him if he would like to make a comment about his song choice, his wardrobe and the pithiness of his voice. Love how such youthful indiscretions can come back to haunt someone.

Oh, and I loved all of your mini-interviews with the AmIdols at the Staples center. keep up the good work.

Comments by 1, 2 and 4 are from idiots. They are typical of the sort of desperate losers you find on dating sites. Stay away. You'll have a better chance of finding romance at the supermarket or in church.

Get a life people.

As horrible as that is, it just goes to show that Simon is/was willing to do whatever it takes/took to get ahead in the biz. Can't really fault him or that. Sort of the opposite of the AI auditioners that cry and claim they are giving up on music since they didn't get the "golden ticket".

He was only trying to pitch a song. He wasn't trying to get on American Idol, or impress the panel of judges. On American Idol, they are trying to get the people with the most talent in front of the one with the real votes (the viewers).

If Simon comments on a performer/performance, he is trying to motivate them to get thier best act forward. Give him a break, at least he is trying to tell what he see's as a man in the music industry. It is his opinion and he lets you know it. The viewers are the voters, not Simon. So if you get booted off, its not his fault.

That was so long ago. The music industry has changed and a lot of times it's about how you look and promote yourself. Look at Britney Spears. The girl cannot sing to save her life but she uses dancing a lot of sexuality to sell records. On American Idol, Simon is making his comments on what sells records now.

"Simple Simon" will be an appropriate name for him. Though he's so highly paid, he still dresses simply in a collarless t-shirt, plain, with no decoration or design. He tells the contestant the real situation.
