Simon Cowell Witnesses The "Best Audition Ever"?

Posted Sun Aug 23, 2009 10:59am PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

This weekend The X Factor--the British version of American Idol, basically, and the show that spawned Leona Lewis--premiered in the U.K., switching to the even more dramatic live-audition format of Simon Cowell's other big across-the-pond reality hit, Britain's Got Talent. And auditioning Saturday night, non-coincidentally in the all-important "pimp slot," was hunky and likable schoolteacher Danyl Johnson. And this teacher gave an A+ performance, for sure.

How good was Danyl? Well, he managed to accomplish the unthinkable: Danyl not only made Simon Cowell smile, but he inspired Simon to give him a standing ovation...AND Simon even declared Danyl's audition (of the Joe Cocker version of "With A Little Help From My Friends") "the single best first audition I have ever heard."

Yes, you read that right: THE. BEST. EVER.

*SEE DANYL'S AUDITION HERE TO SEE WHAT GOT SIMON SO EXCITED*

Blimey. Okay, yeah, that was good. Bloody good. No wonder the Susan Boyle-level hype has already begun in Britain, even though only one episode of this year's X Factor season has aired so far. "Future star" Danyl is already tipped to win the entire series, and the U.K. tabloids are already lurching into overdrive, running articles speculating about his lovelife, his sexuality, and his supposed crushes on the X Factor judges.

It's no wonder Danyl is garnering so much attention, with an incredible audition like that and high praise from the normally less-than-sycophantic Simon. But Simon might want to dial it down just a bit if he wants Danyl to make it all the way to the end. After all, he should remember how his blatant fawning fatigued a nation of skeptical viewers and eventually caused his former American Idol favorites, David Archuleta and Adam Lambert, to wind up in second place.

However, that being said...if Danyl keeps singing like he did Saturday night, it might be hard for Simon to maintain his usual prickly persona.

Do you think Danyl Johnson's X Factor performance was the "best audition ever"? Feel free to share your thoughts--or your own favorite past reality auditions--on the messageboard here. My personal favorite audition, actually, is the one HERE...although, come to think of it, I can totally imagine Danyl killing it on that ballad...

hmmm, i really don't think it was that good, i mean he's okay but by no means was that the best audition ever.

Ummm... was that the right video? I mean it was pretty good, but I've heard better auditions. The background music made it seem a lot more exciting than it really was. Other people might love it, and I'm not saying it was bad, because it was good, but I'm confused as to why Simon called it the best audition he's ever heard.

Its pretty simple really, most 1st auditioners don't come out and get the crowd into an audition. He came on like he owned the stage, did so, and showed he could really perform. The background music did wonders for him, and the 'gimmicky' performance shows he had the foresight to create a routine and pulled it off great, and you wonder why they loved him? He came on like a pro, and that shows a lot of skill, guts and heart, so everyone treated him like a pro.

it was very well done!!! congraduations

uhhhhh, where's the beef? Carrie Underwoods rendition of I cant make you love me blew that away by far, so did Chris Daughtrey's. Simon is fickle and strange to me, he likes what he likes and that's all he likes. I think if I could hear is clearer I could make a better judgement, but I am on the fence for sure.

Gee I didn't know Simon is a HUGE wonder years fan....

He's okay...didn't really do anything for me though. I guess I'm so ga ga over Adam Lambert...someone would have to be absolutely out of this world to impress me in one of these shows.

Yes, I realize this is not AI:)

I liked the Joe Cocker rendition of the song, but loved Danyl's. I think he had fantastic energy and sang his heart out--and I think he has a tremendous voice. His theatrical instincts were great and he electrified the audience.

He didn't even sing that much, just smiled and flirted with the judges. They must have liked his shorts.

The best ever? What a joke, smile pretty, sing part of a song dance around and whoo hoo you are a star! I liked the wonder years comment though ha ha!

I'VE BEEN WATCHING AMERICA IDOL FOR MANY YEARS ,WATCH MANY TALENTED SINGERS GET BOOTED OFF.THEN YOU GET SOMEONE WHO SCREAMS THEIR WAY TO THE TOP,AND BOOM THEY ARE A STAR, THEN THERE ARE SINGERS THAT SHOULD BE CHOOSEN THEN THEY ARE LET GO.I THINK AMERICA IDOL IS FIXED RIGHT FROM THE BEGINNING. AMERICA IDOL WAKE UP AND GIVE A HARD WORKING PERSON SOME RECOGNITION. THANKS.

Definately shows the difference between the UK and US audiences. That audition would never fly stateside; nor would Simon have praised it as "the best ever". British people love cheasy pop... This is ridiculous... Good, maybe even just decent, but not the best ever!

Can not believe people waste their time watching this SH&@$% when they could be doing something interesting with their lives.

I watched it a couple of days ago and follow XFactor on YouTube ... much better than American Idol ... there were a couple of really good singers and it will be a fight to the end ...

I think that was awesome! It was the best thing i had ever heard on one of these singing shows! I dounno why u guys wrote such harsh comments, but im totally against those.... :(

Too much noise for me. Best ever? Give me a break! So much talent out there............but heh sex sells. If the judge could have jumped into his arms, I think she would have. Go do it on your own time folks.

Compared to many I have seen, this is a good, maybe even great first audition. It remains to be seen though, whether he is a one-shot wonder or whether he can go the distance.... Many have choked once they get further into the competition.

18. Jad -
He was very talented.....don't think he'll win but very talented indeed.

You know its funny, many of you lose sight of the fact that singing for the purpose of these shows is 'performing' too. Bottom line is that this guy did a rendition of the song that rivals a legend in terms of his level of professionalism... you say gimmicky, you compare him to Adam Lambert... come on folks have a look again at Adam's first audition... its apples and oranges... in one venue you are supposed to just sing... in another you play to a huge crowd! How can you possibly think that in a room with just 4 judges that the atmosphere can ever rival what you just saw? It is not doable, not ever, so... Mr. Cowell is correct, by far the best 'performance' for a 'first' audition one of these shows has ever seen. If Adam had a crowd at his first audition and worked them into a frenzy like Danyl did... then we can talk, but until that format happens on the American side of the pond, you will continue to see better performances on that side, at least for the very early stages.
Bottom line is Danyl nailed it, but no one said you had to like it!

There is no argument that the world is ripe with talent, there are singers, musicians and dancers that can wow almost any crowd any day of the week. But when all you're really doing is copying the creativity of some truly gifted artist, what have you done? Not much!
Joe Cocker's take on the Beatles "With A Little Help from My Friends" was a genuine act of genius, these karaoke contests are less than suitable replacements or substitutes. If these hopefuls are going to demonstrate that they have talent, then have them do original work. I don't mean they should have to create a completely original piece, just do a completely original take on the piece. enough said.
