Adam Lambert's Upcoming Album: Bigger Than The Beatles?

Posted Sun Sep 27, 2009 9:24pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, I know that an inflammatory blog title like the one above might create an outcry not unlike the hubbub that ensued when the Beatles' own John Lennon declared that the Beatles were bigger than God. But here's a fact: Only a few hours after being listed on Amazon, Adam Lambert's pre-orderable debut album is already at #2 on the site's Bestsellers chart...above Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, fellow Simon Cowell-affiliated reality star Susan Boyle (whose own debut comes out the same day as Adam's, November 24), and--yes--the Beatles.

What makes this early sales feat especially impressive is the fact that no one (except for a few lucky industry insiders) have even heard any material from Adam's album yet. While the buzz grows ever-buzzier with news of the album's many interesting collaborators (Idol judge Kara Dioguardi, Green Day producer Rob Cavallo, Australian electro auteur Sam Sparro, glam-pop piano man Ferras, Swedish hitmaker Max Martin, OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, Lady Gaga producers RedOne and Claude Kelly, Nashville songwriter Aimee Mayo...the A-list goes on and on), and the hype surrounding possible lead single "Strut" is especially high, there's been no Lambert single leaked online or previewed on the radio.

Conversely, American Idol winner Kris Allen's first single, a catchy cover of the Script's B-side track "Live Like We're Dying," has already premiered to largely positive reactions--but his own debut album, which comes out November 17, is still surprisingly only at #132 on the Amazon chart. While it's safe to assume that Kris's album will enjoy a stellar first sales week in November, and will probably even enter the Billboard chart at #1, it doesn't seem to have the same pre-release buzz as Adam's right now.

Clearly, Adam's album is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases of 2009. Some diehard fans have already ordered multiple copies. In fact, as of this writing, the only pop star Adam's been unable to topple on the Amazon chart is Barbra Streisand...but hey, coming in second to the almighty Babs ain't too shabby.

"... coming in second to the almighty Babs ain't too shabby"

... especially considering that the Streisand album hits stores tomorrow (Sept. 29th) and was promoted by Oprah on Friday.

Well, Amazon has 10% of the total market share for CDs, so this is good. It'll be intersting to see how he does on iTunes when he goes up for sale there. This is bound to make RCA happy though.

I just preordered several copies and I will purchase more in my hometown. I have never been so excited over a CD in my life. I cant wait to hear it!

5. mb -
He will be biggest!

I am a 30 something Beatlemaniac, and I find no offense to Adam being bigger than The Beatles! In fact, I place him up there on the same level as The Beatles; as one of MY favorite artists of all time! : )

Lyndsay add to the fact that no promotion of Adam's album being available for Pre order on Amazon (Started today) was ever mentioned. In fact I think your article is now the first. That is impressive no matter what one thinks of him. YEAH

Lydsey Parker's column:

While I'm sure there are some fans buying a few extra copies of Adam's CD to stuff the Christmas stockings of friends and family who they think might like him, most of us are content with a single CD. Well, that is until they release a deluxe version with a bonus track or something, not gonna lie, I wouldn't be able to stop myself from snapping that up too.

Adam's rise up the chart this morning is surprising not only because he didn't have a single release and corresponding press tour yet to drive the sales, but also because the album doesn't even have a name, genre or even a pretty picture yet! It's sort of hilarious to see this generic square graphic selling pre-orders on the basis of one thing -- the name Adam Lambert.

Great column, Lindsey!

Actually, in addition to what MelissaPauls writes, you can't even find the CD listed if you search for Adam Lambert! Sunday afternoon it still listed an entry that at one point was for preIdol CD the snakes at Hi-Fi were trying to sell, but the only way people found how to order it was by spreading the link on twitter and his websites.

AND that was enough to get him to #2!!! Once the link is clear and visible, and it gets promoted somewhere, it will blast off into the stratosphere. Go Adam!

Oops, so sorry for spelling your name wrong, Lyndsey! I should really look into that thing called proofreading.

And Yahoo! Music User, I didn't realize how difficult the album was to find on the basis of a name search; you're right, I followed a link like apparently everyone else did. Since there wasn't a link provided in the above article, just in case anyone is having trouble finding the album here it is:

Yay! So excited about Adam's CD. Wish I could pre-order it in my country.

14. Yahoo! Music User -
adam is a poser and the beatles rock. bottom line.

15. Daf -
The most striking aspect of all this adamstorm is the fact that there was no promotion about the pre-orders. His fans social networks spread the word and that was it.

Adam has always lived up to our expectations. I am sure he won´t dissapoint us with this album. I have already ordered 3, will order more and will download when available in iTunes

16. Linda C -
It is interesting how it went to number two in less than 24 hours. But the kicker of it all is that it is number 1 on Amazon Germany and #24 Amazon Japan. There has been no publicity for him in those countries.

17. jacqueline l -
they are also ,preordering in the u.k ,and japan ,,seems like people are excited about this everywhere

18. Judi -
Watching Adam's rise to fame has been spectacular. The fact that his album is selling so well at the mere mention of his name is pretty darn impressive ! Go Adam !!

19. Zak S -
This isn't necessarily a good thing. It might not live up to all this hype.

I have listened to EVERY song this dude has song via Youtube, and there will be no disappointment. He could sing Mary had a little lamb and it would fly off the shelves...I am a music teacher, and he amazes me. ADAM ROCKS..
