Idol Update: The Top 12 Will Sing The Fab 4!
In my boys-night recap from earlier today, I lamented the lack of Beatles songs during last week's '60s Night.
In fact, other than David Archuleta and Blake Lewis's performances of John Lennon's solo song "Imagine," Taylor Hicks' cover of (the George Harrison-penned) "Something," and a Sgt. Pepper's medley on last season's finale, Beatles songs of any kind have (for legal reasons) been conspicuously absent from Idol throughout all seven seasons.
Until now!
Yes, today on Ryan Seacrest's KIIS-FM morning radio show, American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe revealed that the entire 180-song Beatles catalog is finally available for use on the show...and when the top 12 hopefuls sing in just two weeks, they'll be warbling the words of Lennon & McCartney.
Very exciting news! But considering that the Beatles are arguably the greatest music-makers of all time, the season 7 finalists are up for a real challenge here. After all, people don't like to hear Beatles songs messed with. Mangle a classic like "Ticket To Ride" and you're pretty much guaranteed a ticket to ride straight out of Hollywood. Never in Idol history has the make-or-break issue of "song selection" been as crucial as it will be on Beatles Night.
I'm already racking my brain trying to match the right Beatles tune to the right contestant. Here's what I've come up with so far...feel free to post your own suggestions on the message board below!
Amanda Overmyer - "Helter Skelter" (because it's the Beatles' most rockin', most Manson-ish song)
Brooke White - "Here Comes The Sun" (yes, I know it's a George Harrison tune, but she's got to do it because like George, she's a dark horse)
Carly Smithson - Paul's "Mull Of Kintyre" (y'know, because she's Irish)
Danny Noriega - "Get Back" (with everyone talking about how girly and pretty Danny is, I want to him ham it up while belting out that line about sweet Loretta thinking she's a woman but really being a man)
David Archuleta - "Yesterday" (because he's good with the weepy ballads; the grandmas and Paula will loooove it)
David Cook - "Paperback Writer" (because he's a word nerd!)
Jason Castro - "All You Need Is Love" (because he's great at singing feelgood hippie ditties)
Michael Johns - "Come Together" (but I want him to do the Aerosmith version!)
Robbie Carrico - "I'm A Loser" (because--sorry, it's mean of me to say--the guy probably ain't gonna win this competition)

It's been covered by a lot of rockers like PAt Benatar, Motley Crue, Soundgarden and White Zombie (according to this Wikipedia article) so it would make sense to suggest that would be the Beatles song Amanda would do. Plus she kind of looks like a serial killer, LOL!
But of course Amanda would ruin it....because she sucks!

By the way Lyndsey, if you're reading this comment, you really made this high school geography teacher [originally from Ireland and now living in Canada] chuckle. Your response to the individual who corrected your earlier error included the ability to laugh at yourself in the most humble way, when you wrote: "Man, guess that is why I am a blogger and not a geography teacher!"
This sentence made me holler.

I'd also add that equally enjoyable is reading the comments from other people (with the exception of the unnecessarily cruel or prejudicial ones). People from all walks of life, and all ages seem to be fans of your blog (or at least interested enough to read what you have to say). I find their comments refreshing and smart.
