Adam Lambert's 'Early Show' Performance Silences Haters

Posted Wed Nov 25, 2009 11:25am PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

I am so often ensconced in my little American Idol bubble that I often forget that many people (gasp!!) do not watch Idol. Some poor deprived people have sadly gone through their entire lives without enjoying a single episode. Tragic. Anyway, those people never heard or saw Adam Lambert perform until the American Music Awards on Sunday night. That was their first impression of him, and for many it was not a good one.

While I will probably get flak for saying this, as a longtime Adam supporter I hold him to a high standard (I believe he really set the bar for Idol) and I must admit his AMAs performance was not a proper introduction to the uninitiated. The stage set was too busy, with too much distracting stuff going on; the sound was a mess (for many AMA performers, not just Adam) so that his vocals were not as flawless as usual (Adam himself admitted this) and the song, "For Your Entertainment," sounded muddy and confused; and while the "controversial" stunts he pulled certainly got people talking, unfortunately people were not talking about his actual talent.

So I admit I was a little worried when Adam performed on CBS's The Early Show this morning (after skittish producers at ABC's Good Morning America cancelled his appearance due to AMAs fallout). It's not that I personally doubted him, as I already well knew what he was capable of. But I felt this was a make-or-break performance for him, a chance for him to prove to all uninitiated naysayers--those who never saw him sing "Ring Of Fire" or "Whole Lotta Love" on Idol, and who didn't enjoy his AMAs performance on Sunday--that he can deliver like a real star and live up to his hype. It's amazing that Adam would ever be in a position of having to prove such a thing, but like I said, not everyone watches American Idol.

Therefore I am thrilled to report that Adam completely excelled on The Early Show. This was the Adam Lambert that inspired Simon Cowell to get out of his chair for a standing ovation, that made Brian May of Queen offer him a job, that prompted artists like Lady Gaga and Muse to give him songs for his debut album. Adam's performance of his second single, the chilling Max Martin/Pink pop ballad "Whataya Want From Me," was impeccable, and the vulnerable lyrics ("Just don't give up/I'm workin' it out/Please don't give in/I won't let you down/It messed me up/Need a second to breathe/Just keep coming around") actually took on poignant new meaning in light of recent events:

And then he gave his first televised performance of my personal favorite song on his debut album, "Music Again" (penned by rock god Justin Hawkins of the Darkness), and it was full of joy and exuberance and cowbells. The loaded smile that had been so oddly missing from Adam's almost angry AMAs performance was back, he seemed like he was having a lot of fun, and the celebratory lyrics ("I'm inspired again," "You make me wanna listen to music again") also rang true in that happy moment:

So take that, haters.

What was truly upsetting at The Early Show was the fact that they blurred out Adam kissing his band mate, but did not blur out Britney and Madonna kissing.

That is outrageous to me.

2. Ozlem -
Well-said, as usual! :)

Great review; thanks for being an honest fan.

Once again, you and I agree, Lyndsey. I am bummed that CBS blurred Adam and Tommy kissing, but didn't do the same with Britney and Madonna. Still the double standard. But at least CBS gave Adam a lot of air time to show who he is and I applaud them for that.

Well stated Lyndsey! I couldn't agree more! So true with the observation that many had not seen or been initiated to his out-of-the-box performances on Idol! He is very charming when he performs as he did this morning! I am a big fan of Adam's (and obviously David Cook, which is possible people! lol), so I support him regardless - but it's a good thing for those who have never seen him to have an authentic look at the talent that is so beautifully... Adam Lambert!

I always love your reviews Lyndsey. Hopefully this combined with the Letterman performance will show the non-idol public (there is a non-idol public? *gasp!!!*) that just being shocking isn't what Adam is all about. The AMAs definitely were not a great display of his talent, even though I actually enjoyed his "controversy"

Thank you...

Thanks for posting the video. Wish I could have been at home to watch. I know Adam can sing and be an awesome performer. I'm just a mom first and was not prepared for his actions.

9. Lary -
his performance was indeed excellent.. i for one never doubted his talent..Love adam..thanks for the review..his fans will always be here to support him..

Wow, Lyndsey. BIG surprise you like his performance.

Seriously, this guy can do no wrong by you. Even with your AMA coverage, you were nothing but behind him in everything. And all of that is fine, but by you (who drolls at anything Glambert) saying his Early Show was a success means nothing after 10 months of you praising his every note. I could not read any article making these types of statements when you don't stand on unbias terms.

Sorry, Lyndsey, but most of the time you are articulate and well-spoken; but every article about Glambert's "silencing haters" or you trying to speak for the public perspective has no weight.

"loaded smile" :)
this:
"t's amazing that Adam would ever be in a position of having to prove such a thing" REALLY.
I understand your concern over the AMA show because it was technically kind of a mess and I did worry about people's opinions of him -those who don't know he's an amazing and fun and lovable and vulnerable singer- because the performance was off- the singing was off and the staging looked underrehearsed and awkward.
BUT - today he hopefully has made some new fans: The Early Show viewers, Letterman viewers; and re-rounded up his old fans who became doubters (UNFAITHFUL -pah I spit on you!) fans with his excellence.

12. Cecilia -
well said Lyndsey! I was worried too yesterday :) But now I'm so proud of him :) He kinda had an off night for the AMA, especially when there might be sth. wrong with the sounding system. And yes, the stage is too busy to focus. Anyway as a glambert, I did feel disappointed for that AMA performance. But I know he is much much more than that :) I like to see his smile :)

Talent tells, Music wins, I'll just wait, see him rise as a star :) Oh btw, I love his album :) really great :)

love you Lyndsey!

Noah, if you had read this blog closely or read my blog the night of the AMAs, you would know that your comment "Seriously, this guy can do no wrong by you. Even with your AMA coverage, you were nothing but behind him in everything" is not at all true. I was not thrilled with Adam's AMAs performance and I said so, depsite the heat I knew I would get from his most ardent fans. I was objective. He faltered on the AMAs and I could not write something 100% positive that night in lght of that. Even Adam knows it was not his best performance by a longshot. He redeemed himself on The Early Show with a strong performance that better showcased his vocal talents and put substance before shock. That is my point.

14. Vicky -
thanks lyndsey so much for this amazing review! u r such an honest fan! i

Not a fan of his music & I don't understand the outrage of his fans. It's like you both want him to push the envelope & be sexy & outrageous while at the same time be mainstream & respectable. You can't have it both ways, whether you are gay or straight.

For example, Lady Gaga may sell a lot of records but she will never be mainstream. She die before let that happen. It's like some people want Lambert to be a young, male, gay version of Susan Boyle. Prince & Madonna were once not considered respectable, caused boycotts because they simulated intercourse on stage.

Embrace the scandal, it's the best thing that could happen to his career after such a bad, vocal performance at the AMAs. Do you really want him to be performing on early morning (snooze!) talk shows or on shows like SNL or Letterman? He obviously wants to push the limits so stop expecting all of America to adore him. If they did, it would mean he was producing commercial, middle-of-the-road, schlock and I expect that is not what you want.

16. sanford -
Geez, That was nothing, Anybody remember Prince's live MTV award show "GETT OFF" performance a hundred years ???

17. Cindy -
I actually don't watch idol, but I have to admit that Idol does come out with some great performers. I guess I'm the type of person who just follows after the whole show is already done with. I have to say Adam is very impressive. He excites me.

I don't think the people who don't like Adam are going to change their mind over one performance. If they are sane, they wouldn't even watch it considering how much they claim to hate him, but they're not the type of audience that Adam would want anyway.

18. Zak S -
Wow. I'm sitting here wondering why he didn't do THIS for the AMAs. Something like this would've been so much better. If he had to do something outrageous, he could've done something like he did in the FYE video. Anyway, these performances remind me why I am actually a big fan of Adam Lambert's now. He is an amazing singer with a very unique voice (I like the scream and falsetto). The AMA performance completely turned me off. I guess I'm just homophobic or something but I don't enjoy seeing simulated BJs by a guy on another guy. Anyway, I hope these performances will help sell his albums. They were great showcases for his voice.

Dear Liz #16:
Adam's on Letterman tonight.
You're welcome.

20. Zak S -
Liz, by saying Lady Gaga isn't mainstream and will never be, you have downgraded your credibility. Anyone who doesn't believe Lady Gaga is completely mainstream is foolish. That being said, your points are fairly relevant. For me, what turned me off about the performance was the simulated [profane] part and the fondling of that female dancer. Him kissing his that guy was pretty much nothing and it was still pushing the envelope in a big way. My point is, I expect Adam Lambert to do outrageous things, but I don't expect them to be so vulgar and inappropriate for TV. Kissing the guy was definitely enough. He did not have to do any of the other things. It was just distasteful, and to top it all off, his vocals were bad. Lady Gaga is shocking and outrageous without being terribly vulgar but still being sexy. THAT'S what Adam Lambert should be doing. Be outrageous, be sexy, whatever. Just don't be so vulgar.
