American Idol's Top 5 Most Shocking Eliminations

Posted Wed Mar 11, 2009 6:51pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Every American Idol season has its unceremonious ousting of a former frontrunner, the most recent being 2008's hunky Australian rocker Michael Johns. His elimination in season 7 sent shockwaves across the blogosphere last year; servers were practically melting and megaherting under the pressure of all the angry message board stampedes.

But this was hardly the first elimination shocker in Idol history. Every year, really, some fan fave who seemed untouchable, invincible, virtually guaranteed a golden ticket straight through to the Hollywood finale...gets cut. For some of these prematurely ejected rejects, it's the end of an era, but for others it's just the beginning of a fabulous new career.

So far, Michael Johns is falling into the former category, sadly performing at Idol-themed, family-fare showcases at Disneyworld, which doesn't exact jibe with his "rocker" image. It remains to be seen if the release of his upcoming debut solo album will change that.

Anyway, such "tragedies" may be avoided in the future, starting this season, with a just-announced Idol rule called the "Judges' Save." One time--and ONLY one time--the judges will be able to save one contestant that they think deserves to escape elimination this season. It's sort of like a Get Out Of Jail Free card for the judges. They can only use it once; the decision to use it must be unanimous; and it can only be used up until the top five. But it still could drastically change the game.

Just imagine how past seasons might have panned out differently if the Judges' Save policy had been in effect the nights that contestants like Michael were on the chopping block!

So to celebrate this new policy--and honor past Idol rejects not fortunate enough to take advantage of it--here in ascending order of overall shockingness are the five biggest surprise eliminations in AmIdol history.

5) Constantine Maroulis, Season 4 - With his David Cassidy-ish teen-dream appeal, theatrical flourishes, and bedroom-eyed manner of romancing the camera, Greek god (and future soap opera star) Constantine made all the girlies swoon. Unfortunately, there was one week when he didn't make them vote, so he was shockingly sent packing--this despite the fact that he'd never previously even been in the bottom three that season. Making matters worse was that Constantine lost out to charisma-free, socially awkward Scotty "The Body" Savol, VoteForTheWorst.com's season-4 poster boy and an alleged domestic abuser to boot. Yes, this was the evening when it became clear just how much influence Vote For The Worst wielded over the disgruntled, speed-dialing masses.

4) Josiah Leming, Season 7 - This was far and away the most shocking cut NOT decided by a public vote. The judges' puzzling decision to not include Britpop-loving homeless ragamuffin Josiah--one of the most favored hopefuls in the earlier audition episodes, at least in terms of screen time--in the top 24 spurned countless outraged protest posts across American Idol message boards. Petitions to reinstate Josiah via the old "wild card" policy were politely ignored by 19 Management and Fox; however, a star-making guest appearance on Ellen DeGeneres, more Yahoo! Search queries for "Josiah Leming" than for any of the actual 24 finalists, thousands of visits to Josiah's MySpace page, and a rumored contract with Warner Bros. Records nevertheless followed.

3) Jennifer Hudson, Season 3 - On one of Idol's most controversial nights, future Academy Award-winner Jennifer was unbelievably joined in the bottom three by the season's other two African-American divas, vocal powerhouse LaToya London and eventual champion Fantasia Barrino. Meanwhile, lesser contestants like redheaded (read: Caucasian) Sinatra impressionist John Stevens were safe that evening, causing some protesters (including Elton John) to cry racism. But obviously Jen got her revenge, when she channeled all her hurt over this very public rejection into her  Effie role in Dreamgirls. Oscars and Grammys soon followed.

2) Tamyra Gray, Season 1- From the moment then-unknown Tamyra auditioned on the then-unknown Idol show, she seemed like the clear one to beat. And week after week, her octave-straddling performances like "A House Is Not A Home" left Paula Abdul in tears and the rest of America in awe. So naturally, on the elimination episode when it came down to Tamyra and the vocally limited, fuchsia-haired Nikki McKibbin, no one for a nanosecond believed that Nikki would be the one who'd stay. Even Nikki herself looked utterly dumbfounded when the vote results were read. Not since the "hanging chad" 2000 Presidential election scandal two years earlier had the public so vehemently cried out for a vote recount...but the fact is, people just didn't realize back then how crucial the voting process was to this show. This was the first real elimination shocker in Idol history, and in this case Vote For The Worst, which did not exist back then, was not to blame.

1) Chris Daughtry, Season 5 - Chris was another clear frontrunner from his very first audition, and in season 5 it looked like a rocker was finally set to win Idol. In fact, no one, not even Sylvia Brown, could have predicted that it'd be silver-haired, purple-blazered, drunk-dancing Taylor Hicks, and not Chris, who'd walk away with the season's top honors. The easily YouTubed clip of Chris receiving the stunning news of his early exit (via Ryan Seacrest's blunt and almost downright nasty delivery) has been described as a "snuff film for people who enjoy watching others' disappointment," and millions of viewers' hearts immediately went out to the rejected rocker. And millions of their dollars later went out to him as well, when Daughtry's album became the fastest-selling debut in SoundScan history and one of the overall top sellers of 2007. (This made him one of the four most successful Idols of all time, along with Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, and Clay Aiken). Meanwhile, the two contestants who actually made it to the finale in season 5, Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee, have since been dropped by BMG.

What fine work you do LP. I hope posters will be respectful and offer "their opinions" on who might be in the Top 5, rather than attack you or others over the issue. I have a lot of faith in us, so I think this should be a fun thread. Knock wood! I am anxious to read the divergent picks and especially the reasons why the chosen eliminations are viewed as MOST shocking.

I immediately thought of Constantine. I saw the Idol tour that year and he stood way above the rest. He came into the audience and sang to the ladies and had much more charisma than anyone else. No question Chris Daughtry should have won last year. I definitely think Idol producers have control of the vote, usually they teach a lesson to someone who has talked back or isn't taking things seriously by putting them in the bottom three. Of course they have managed to get rid of all the controversial ones very quickly this year: Danny, David H, Amanda. Nigel's comment about Micheal was this should show others how no one is safe and stir things up. Things could be going on in the background that we don't know about. Maybe they don't want a sexy charismatic guy to win. Some say this one is rigged for David A to win, maybe Micheal was getting too good! Not sure he would have won but there were definitely others that should have gone before him.

I think Tamyra was the most shocking ever. As someone else already posted, by now we're used to "shockers" - almost every season someone goes home when before they were expected to. But when the show was new no one knew stuff like that could happen. Everyone assumed the deal was already sealed and Tamyra would win. I'm actually surprised she hasn't had more of a career after the show. I know she's done some acting and song writing bt she was such a favorite on the show at the time I'm surprised she's not successful like Daughtry and Clay.

Okay, we've seen what 'they' can do. How about we do a "Fans gives back" and really give it to THEM?

Perhaps if we all banded together and voted for someone they they likely cant make long term money on?

We know they have selected little David A to win for a number of money factors... young (so they can squeeze the most out of him, and the public for as long as possible, and can sell the most 'accessories' with his picture on it (handbags, lip-gloss, hairbrushes, notebooks, cell-phone holders, etc.. get the picture?) I think we all understand who the target audience is, and why.)

Also, David A can be molded and trained to be a "pop" or "inspirational" star, or whatever the flavor of the year will be. and being so young, they can change him every couple of years.

So here is my idea.. How about we all vote for Carly? Lets face it, shes ugly when she sings and will not be very packageable without a LOT of time and expense. (As opposed to David A.) Heck, she has failed previously, right?

How many teenage girls will buy pens and mousepads with HER picture on it?

I'm not a fan of VFTW, but the concept is good. And in this case, it works for me.

but I'd like to see them get behinf Carly instead. I am not a fan of Kristi or her singing. (My ID is just a name, for a joke.)

I think she is the worst singer left as do most of everyone in every blog, anywhere. But lets face it, even if we all vote for her and follow the lead of VFTW, "people" will make money on her for years for obvious reasons.

If VFTW switches to Carly, count me in. Even if they dont, maybe WE should vote for Carly anyway.

i love Micheal John he shouldn't have gone home!

Ryan Seacrest DID seem to enjoy announcing Michael John's elimination from the show. Like most "Idol" fans, I was shocked!

Michael Johns' American Idol ouster was indeed a shocker, especially to Michael Johns.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't surprised," Johns told reporters Friday. "I'd never been in the bottom three. I thought my strongest performances were the last two weeks.

"Nothing has sunk in yet."

Johns was eliminated Thursday amid the continuing hoopla of the Idol Gives Back fundraiser. Once considered a frontrunner, or at least a top challenger to David Archuleta, he ended up placing eighth.

Johns failed to generate enough votes for his performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On." He defended the song as appropriate for Tuesday's inspirational theme night, saying the classic rocker was about struggles and, as its title suggests, dreams: "I've done a lot of that over the last 10 years."

Johns said there were no hard feelings about how Idol host Ryan Seacrest seemed to suggest that Johns wouldn't be offed because, after all, no one was offed during last year's Idol Gives Back event.

"I get the television aspect of this competition," Johns said. "I mean, it was tough, and then they did [hint] that maybe I'm not going home."

The hint, of course, was a tease. Johns was going home. "Ryan gave me a look, like, I am so sorry," he said.

The 29-year-old ascot-wearing Aussie, who once fronted a band, the Rising, signed to Madonna's label, deflected questions about whether his Aussie-ness, his professional background or even his ascot cost him votes, and reiterated this season's Idol talking point: the depth of talent in the top 12.

"There was no laughingstock. There were no jokers...They wanted it to be a singing competition instead of a TV show with the controversy of Sanjaya," Johns said, invoking the name of the show's most notorious finalist.

Johns said he's received encouraging words from Dolly Parton—he was a hit with her "It's All Wrong, but It's All Right" last week—and fellow Aussie Nicole Kidman and her husband Keith Urban.

He said the new plan was to stay in the States and make a new record. The old plan was to sing Mariah Carey's "Vision of Love" on next week's Idol.

"And it was [going to be] hot, too," Johns said. "I'm a little bummed."

well i cannot say i am surprised that one of the best singers on this season was sent home too early (i mean it's not like we haven't seen it before) but surely no one seriously thinks David A. is gonna win the whole thing? If he does then maybe i will believe in an Idol conspiracy.

30. Horse -
P.S. Dont complain to Idol or Fox. They wont care.

Complain directly to to FORD, and Coke, AT&T, etc.

THEY will care what you say.

Please correct the notion that Jordin would have been a goner w/o the IGB reprieve. Jordin was never in the bottom three (Wikipedia-Jordin Sparks). The reason she was called last is precisely for the shock effect. If you watch again the episode on YouTube, the audience started to applause after Chris was called safe but immediately went silent when they realized that it was Jordin that was left standing. Plus many viewers noted the smiles of the contestants. In the episode of American Idol Extra hosted by J D Roberto, the contestants explained why they knew nobody was going home that night. You'll note that after Jordin was called "also safe" the group went into a huddle for about a minute, this was suspected to be because Jordin had to put on tears to play along with the drama. Phil Stacey commented that "nobody among them will ever think that Jordan will be eliminated", because at that point of the contest, Jordin was already a front runner after Randy and Simon commented positively after she sang "If we hold on together" and "I (who have nothing)".
The shockers last season were the elimination of Sundance Head in favor of Sanjaya, Sabrina Sloan for Hailey Scarnato for the top 12 and Melinda Doolittle for Blake Lewis for the finale.
I agree that the elimination of MJ was a big shocker.

32. Yahoo! Music User -
Thank you for this. I will spread the word as many many people think this was actually not the case. Thanks for taking what is obviously a great amount of time to explain it. All the best, ...

And dont complain that MJ is gone.

But rather, complain that you know its rigged and that David A is going to win because more money can be made on him than any other.

And tell them you know they're all plants because they didn't want another Sanjaya incident this year.

Good day, LP! I also say it's the Chris Daughtry elimination was the supreme shocker of all to me. And the Tamyra and MJ cuts were my runners-up. Love your blogs, by the way. And for those who aren't LIKIN' it, just say so but don't insult the gal or the others who agree with her. It's utterly inane and uncalled-for.

So far, this is my fave post:

A shoutout to dirt_000. Hi!

I like how you wrote your last post on the Wayward Amanda thread. I feel you on that. And thank you for asking that question, somehow for me. Hope to see you here. ;]

This should tell you that the judges can't spot a star when they see one!!! Sometimes there are more than one winner, and more than once have they picked the wrong one! I think the judges should be alternated week to week. !!

38. Yahoo! Music User -
Dear Lyndsey, thanks for the very clever Top 5 list. Might I add, not an easy one to compile?! ;) Sure ~ arguably ~ there are some obvious choices, but it's still a tough call. You put yourself out there each and every time, never knowing how people will react but offering your viewpoint anyway. This is only one of the many things I appreciate about you and this site. Thank you. On a related note ~ on the MJ elimination blog ~ a dozen or so egotisitical posters labeled ALL your regular readers and ALL Idol fans "losers", told us "to get a life", "read a book for a change", "give to our family", and lectured us endlessly on things such as whether we know there are soliders in Iraq (Steel Man Town ~ one of your regular readers, with a heart of gold ~ darn well knows this! He has two sons serving there). For being so-called "morons" and contributing to your blogs {why are they even leaving messages - contradiction???}, they berated us with their very very closed minds. The sanctimoniousness of posts like this should remind us that despite our divergent views we need to be civil to one another and to the Idol contestants. Such unnecessarily cruel statements should be a reality check for the rest of us. Imagine, even though it is impossible to know anything, let alone enough to judge 1000s of posters (and 30 million viewers), people make such judgmental comments. I say we should take heed and not be so judgmental ourselves. Sometimes we fight unnecessarily and unkindly amongst ourselves. *eLLe* and the individual *eLLe* quotes above (see post 38) put it best:

"38. *eLLe* - Sat. Apr 12, 1:29 AM ET

A continuing salute to my fellow readers who spoke up for the rest of us when we were unfairly attacked by those dropping in to visit our online community.

AND #1 IS [DRUMROLL PLEASE] ...

Like I stated earlier Ryan was wrong and for those of us that decide not to tune in anymore that's our choice, what I find funny is there are so many posts that say AI is lame, this thread is for people that don't have a life, the talent on AI is the worst, but the best part is they all know all about the show and this thread, so they must be watching the show and reading this thread that they don't like, so if you don't like the show but watch it and you don't like this thread but read it, I wonder who is the one that doesn't have a life.. just my thought."

Some suggestion to Yahoo - please added two more query tabs :"first" and "last". Currently for a commnents area that has close 6K posts, we have to flip almost 30 pages to get to see the latest post. (Borrowed from the MJ elimination thread).
____

Isabelle, great idea. For now, I copy the http:// into a document on word and use it each time.

To get to page 288 of the MJ elimination thread, for example, type:

http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/realityrocks/45678/idol-elimination-shocker-michael-goes-down-under/?page=288#comments

That will get you to almost the end where I am currently reading. ;)
