McPheever Cools Down

Posted Wed Jan 9, 2008 6:18pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Man, the axe keeps falling over at American Idol HQ. And Kat's the latest to get the cut.

Perhaps the folks over and BMG/19 Management are trying to clear some room for all the new Idols they will presumably sign to record deals after American Idol's successful seventh season. But whatever the reason for all this recent BMG bloodletting, it's just been confirmed--only a day after the announcement that Idol alums Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard were now free agents--that season 5 finalist Katharine McPhee has also been dropped by BMG.

According to a painfully diplomatic and tight-lipped record label spokesperson, "Katharine McPhee has moved on to support her other entertainment activities."

Really now, how are upcoming Idol contestants supposed to get excited about being on this show, when it's becoming glaringly obvious that winning Idol is no guarantee of ANYTHING anymore?

I honestly don't understand how American Idol is going to maintain its Cinderella-story image of waving their Clive Davis-brandished magic wands and transforming great unknown talents into overnight superstars, when Clive and Simon keep turning their discoveries back into pumpkins.

I'm not the biggest Katpacker around (I'm more of a Soul Patroller myself), but here's hoping Katharine is able to find another glass slipper--aka, another record label--that fits.

Come on, it is like getting any job....just 'cause you get a job doesn't mean it is yours to keep 4ever, if you can't cut it...can't produce and bring in the Return on Investment...you gotta go...a company, any company can't keep paying a non-productive employee...would you if it was YOUR company???

sometimes artist contracts are just used as tax write-offs. publicity strategies are outwardly flawed. the people in charge know what they are doing. being on the show boosted her career either way. she's great no matter what she decides to do in her life.

I agrees JPCfan4life....That's how real business works!!!

Goes to show, even a talented young lady like herself can't get by on name alone. The people have to buy your stuff, not bootleg, but actually buy it in order to make it in that business. Good luck to her. She has great pipes, did anyone see her National Anthem? Watch out Whitney Houston, she had my vote for one of the best performances. jv

I wish the music on this first album was closer to what Katharine sang on American Idol. Though this album is pretty good, its just not of my taste.

On the other hand, Jordin Spark's album got great reviews, she is truly an amazing singer. She is such a beautful and natural performer. Since buying the album I have listened to it many times and enjoy it more every time I listen to it. My prayer is that her career will soar like the star that she is.

I found her album and other highly rated albums for awesome prices here:

Alright...I see what you re all saying but really...is she truly an "American Idol"? Her music is good, her persona is not bad but she got cut because the promise of signing her to a laber was done. If you ask me, the music label knows when they have talent. McPhee is not.

The support she received from Her Label
was non-exsistent-
Thank Goodness she is away from you know who.
She will make them all eat C--W

It is very hard to find another Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, though some idols, as with Taylor Swift have done well and have a couple of hits.
Most Real talent is not dug out of a long line of people who think they are the best, but found by chance in a back cafe or through hard work, sleepless nights, doing almost anything to prove their deseire and will-power, singing their hearts out, sleeping in their cars in Nashville.

taylor swift was on american idol??? do you maybe mean kelli pickler?
and i completely agree with JPC fan4LIFE, any company is going to let you go if you aren't producing, or at least make it so miserable for you that you leave on your own accord. seems to me that such a move is usually good for the person. sometimes you find personalities that you can work with better and thus produce better work because you're simply a better team.

i completely agree with JPC fan4LIFE, if u cant make the cut then go find another company that wants you
o step up r game, name isnt enough to get a record deal

Fame, money, a big record deal; is that really the definition of success? Shouldn't their success be that they are able to make a living at the thing that they love. Shouldn't we all be so lucky. Being the biggest star or the hottest new act is not everyone's fulfillment. I've heard Taylor say in interviews that he would go back to singing in beer stained bars and be happy. He just loves to play music. That's the heart of someone who is truely successful. All of the other stuff is just that, stuff.

america votes for this and a lot of the time they dont pick the best artist with the best chance of actually making it. I mean how long did the keep sanjaya last year. america sent chris daughtry and he has become(with his band) the biggest debut rock group ever!!!!

american idol is the greatest talent show however the american public is somewhat bias in their voting. look what happens when they get it right-kelly, carrie who i cant get enough of, fantastic fantasia. the competition does propel them into stardom but they also have a responsibility to work hard to ensure continued success.LIVE ON AMERICAN IDOL LIVE ON

Seriously, Lindsey, why are you crying over Kat McPhee? Let's face it, she pushed for a modern pop album because she's been dreaming for years about being the next hit pop sensation (like Spears when she hit the scene). America fell in love with her ability to belt out the classics. So she turned around and created a horrible 1st album, and the sales were quite poor... Such is life. No one wanted her product, so they're letting her go.

Hey Tsant31, I'm not crying over Kat -- to be honest, I'm not too big a fan of her. I voted for Taylor!

I'm more mourning to Idol-maker process in general. I think the show used to really have impact, but now its influence has been diluuted. Now even the winners have a good chance of failing...which makes the show overall less credible.

I'm more sad about Taylor and Ruben being dropped, honestly...

17. Todd S. -
Hey Lindsey... I am as well. But hey, look at Chris Daughtry. He's climbing into stardom, and nothing seems to be slowing him down. Even Kelly (ugh!) is doing well in Country... I think the public in general is loosing interest in the show. The talent pool last year was not good. My wife and I went to the concernt here in DC, and it was awful. Nothing compared to the year before.

Love your blog!

ecery year a hit artits comes out but its not always the winner

I don't like kat, so i am pretty happy. There are more talented people out there, who have a little more of a chance now!

Why is everyone saying Katharine was dropped??
It was her decision to leave the label, she signed with timewarner recently and now is recording her second album with david foster.
Yes Taylor and Ruben werent the greatest winners, but given the right producers they have been great. Personally all the winners produce average debuts they are forced to record what they are TOLD to record. They have NO creative control. Look at DAUGHTRY he came in third so we wasnt forced to produce something he didnt want to do, and the album was HUGE! Just look at this pass years talent Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis both albums TANKED, given more time and creative control is could have been great.
I personally think IDOL is doing GREAT rating's wise but talent they are failing.
GIVE THEM TIME AND MORE CONTROL!
