McPheever Cools Down

Posted Wed Jan 9, 2008 6:18pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Man, the axe keeps falling over at American Idol HQ. And Kat's the latest to get the cut.

Perhaps the folks over and BMG/19 Management are trying to clear some room for all the new Idols they will presumably sign to record deals after American Idol's successful seventh season. But whatever the reason for all this recent BMG bloodletting, it's just been confirmed--only a day after the announcement that Idol alums Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard were now free agents--that season 5 finalist Katharine McPhee has also been dropped by BMG.

According to a painfully diplomatic and tight-lipped record label spokesperson, "Katharine McPhee has moved on to support her other entertainment activities."

Really now, how are upcoming Idol contestants supposed to get excited about being on this show, when it's becoming glaringly obvious that winning Idol is no guarantee of ANYTHING anymore?

I honestly don't understand how American Idol is going to maintain its Cinderella-story image of waving their Clive Davis-brandished magic wands and transforming great unknown talents into overnight superstars, when Clive and Simon keep turning their discoveries back into pumpkins.

I'm not the biggest Katpacker around (I'm more of a Soul Patroller myself), but here's hoping Katharine is able to find another glass slipper--aka, another record label--that fits.

Its an entertainment show people and many many talented people never make it to the show to make room for the entertainment value. Less laughable fools and more singers will make us all a bit more happy.

Obviously it takes more than winning to have staying power. And as sommeone else mentioned, sometimes the best doesn't win- I think the staying power speaks to that. And look at Clay...he didn't win but had huge staying power/success...and of course there's Jennifer.

Doesn't matter whether the show's been over-sold to prospective contestants or they need a reality check, this is simply another example to us that there are NO guarantees in life. None. If they didn't know it, they should get a clue after this! It's the way of the world.

sometimes it pays to not be the winner CHRIS DAUGHTRY, even though I think he should have won (definitely not be knocked off as early as he was).....but the got the better deal. He can now perform with the band of his choosing and ROCK OUT! Not only is this man gorgeous to look at, but he can really sing! So, being the winner of American Idol is not always the best way to go!

I didn't really like Ruben or Taylor. I completely agree with jpc. I couldn't have said it better myself!!! I also think there are glitches in the whole phone voting system. You can't always get through to vote even if you keep trying, and I don't think you should be able to vote more than once. I honestly wonder if it's rigged.

Clive Davis is legend, but let's face it - the American Idol team isn't on the top of today's music. They have these poor kids doing lame "Up with People" Lennon sister-style group dance sing alongs, get faded pop has-beens to "help" them and march everyone through the same tired set list of Motown songs, no matter what their personal vocal style. It's ludicrous. No wonder Chris Daughtry was cut early - could anyone predict his current success, based on the lame stuff they made him sing on the show? MacFee was pretty with a pretty voice, but not the charisma/personality to drive long-term appeal. She needed a better management/production team to capitalize on Idol. Carrie should thank God Idol's folks knew zero about country - thus turned her over to folks able to position her well for her debut. Sadly for these dropped singers, Idol thinks they know pop, and screws up their careers accordingly. Feel sorry for the guys - especially Reuben! Major talent there - and not one hip R&B producer knew what to do with him? Hard to believe.

the 2 that went 2 early, chris and kelly are still hitting it big. it is only because the older crowd that does not buy music voted for Taylor and Kat, that they made it past the 3rd week.

katherine mcphee - will you marry me????

Katherine and Taylor were both horrible on American Idol. Remember how she kept forgetting the words to her songs? That far into the competiton, forgetting words should not have been accepted. DAUGHTRY sold more cds than anyone in 2007. Yeah, he even beat out Beyonce and other already established artists. He has a wonderful career ahead of him, he definitly deserves it!

I also don't like Kat. But Taylor is a very good singer, I do feel for him. Perhaps it just asn't meant to be! Good luck Taylor...

Well, someone said it, most of the time the public couldn't pick the best if they had too. Hicks was a joke the day he was picked. A fun guy but hey, i got lots of friends that are fun but won't be music stars. Kelly can sing, Carry can sing, Reuben sandwhich could sing a little but he was just a jolly fellow. Clay was the real winner no matter how bad his haircut was. Proof is in the pudding kids, you pick the best singer if you want them to do well, not the plump or cute looking. Oh, and that reminds me, Anastacia, what happened to that squealing badger of a singer. That was a joke vote as well. Give me a break. The best one that year was voted out 2 rounds before they got to the final round and wow was she hotter than a 2 dollar cookstove. Oh mama. I could beat a rented mule like a stepchild if I had my choice that year.

Chris Daughtry should have WON it all...he was robbed!!!

I think American Idol waits too long to bring out a good song from the winner and runner-up. The public moves on and forgets about the winner. Sad, but true. Plus, American Idol never really establishes the singers' style. We think we're voting for one style, and then they release a song so different from what they sang on the show.

What is everyone talking about..both Taylor Hicks and Kathreen were talented..the problem is when you are signed up with managers, producers and record companies you don't get to be you..you have to perform the stuff they want..its all them..not you..heck she is better off a free agent to sing what she wants to sing..same with Taylor Hicks..

most of you say they have no talent..both of them have more talent in their little finger then any of us have in all of our bodies...

No one knows why either of them were cut, its all just speculation..

Hey P.R, Underwood has been singing Country long before AI. She actually had a contract during Leanne Rhimes time but she had to sit tight till the contract was released.
