McPheever Cools Down

Posted Wed Jan 9, 2008 6:18pm PST by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Man, the axe keeps falling over at American Idol HQ. And Kat's the latest to get the cut.

Perhaps the folks over and BMG/19 Management are trying to clear some room for all the new Idols they will presumably sign to record deals after American Idol's successful seventh season. But whatever the reason for all this recent BMG bloodletting, it's just been confirmed--only a day after the announcement that Idol alums Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard were now free agents--that season 5 finalist Katharine McPhee has also been dropped by BMG.

According to a painfully diplomatic and tight-lipped record label spokesperson, "Katharine McPhee has moved on to support her other entertainment activities."

Really now, how are upcoming Idol contestants supposed to get excited about being on this show, when it's becoming glaringly obvious that winning Idol is no guarantee of ANYTHING anymore?

I honestly don't understand how American Idol is going to maintain its Cinderella-story image of waving their Clive Davis-brandished magic wands and transforming great unknown talents into overnight superstars, when Clive and Simon keep turning their discoveries back into pumpkins.

I'm not the biggest Katpacker around (I'm more of a Soul Patroller myself), but here's hoping Katharine is able to find another glass slipper--aka, another record label--that fits.

I'm glad RCA dropped Kat; they aren't worthy enough to be associated with Katharine McPhee. If they can't promote her talent the way it should be promoted, then she needs to be with another label. Now she will have the chance to become as famous as she deserves to be.

Taylor Hicks was awful first of all, Reubun wasn't all that great, katherine should have won anyway, things happen for a reason, can't keep the same job forever!!!

katherine mcphee is a very good singer, but now she has time on her hands, she can finally do things she couldn't do in that busy schedule of hers. i wish rubben, kat, and taylor luck. bye.

I agree with you, JPC fan4LIFE. The only thing Idol is guaranteeing the newest American Idol is a record deal. If you can't cut it after that, then the "guarantee" is over. There are clearly alot of Idol contestants that have won that couldn't cut it and their Idol contemporaries have done done significantly better. OH well! Better luck next time.

Libby, you poor thing. Have you ever heard of redial? Do you really think the number of votes equal the number of callers? And you are complaining about the state of our country? Amazing. Maybe people like you should get an education. That would take care of a lot of our country's problems. It's a TV show that many people enjoy. Do you have a remote control that changes the channel?

I think true talent can come from American Idol. It can come from anywhere. So much talent gets unrecognized because its so hard to get your name out in this industry. American Idol is just one of the many ways to do that. The real competition begins after American Idol is over. Thats where the real winners are shined through. And sometimes even winners of the show (and second place winners) cant always cut it. They move on and find another record label and get on with their careers and life.

Idol has become overdone. It is has basically become a bad joke. America is more obsessed with seeing the worst contestant win, rather than the best. Jordan and Blake had nothing special about them. In fact, the entire last season was pretty dull. I asked a friend of mine who wanted Melinda Dolittle to win (because she was the best signer, I agree), "Would you buy her record?" The response was a postponed, NO. Even if these people win, will we buy their records? Simply put, no. Music is changing. Sounds such as The Frey, The Plain White Ts, more monotonic sounds are taking over. Gone are the days of upbeat pop music. People, especially the new generation, are growing up with underground music and more alternative music. The radio stations constantly blast the same song over and over (Once, I heard Gwen Stefani on 3 different channels at once), which just makes us tune out. Idol has ended up the same way. 7 seasons seems overdone. Especially when we consider the fact that the last 2 have been completely devoid of talent. So, in sum, Idol is out and the artists will likely be one-hit-wonders.

Lets face it - these people are not picked because they are the best. They are picked because people from their part of the country voted for them. How many seasons were there that the most talented person won...........ummmmmmm none!

I think that you get what you work for. Nothing comes complete on a silver tray. I mean look at the other Idol survivors they worked their butts off and look at them now. NOTHING IS FREE! Those who thought that they were going to get a walk in a park need to open their eyes. I am and was a Kat fan! But again she needs to remember to not and forget to work for it. She still has fans out here waiting to hear from her! Its up to her to get it to us to buy and listen!

wow this is sad, the only person who has a real view #40 gets bashed. how many people on here voted in the 2004 election? now how many voted for ai? how many dont agree with our president? all thats left to say is we did this to ourselves, and the freedoms we love are being traded for pop media. what a shame

I agree JPCfan4life ... if they don't turn a profit, someone else needs to fill that spot.

As Americans, we have always chosen our idols for ourselves and we will not necessarily be making our choice for the next American Idol from amongst the group of artists that Paula, Simon, and Randy recruit for their show. Same applies to America's Next Top Model and Tyra Banks.

Some people might have the ability to call in hundreds of times, but that doesnt' mean they have the money to buy their CD'S. I think it should go to one vote per phone line. That would be more honest.
