Idol Elimination Night: Bye Bye, Babbling Brooke

Posted Wed Apr 30 7:30pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Why is that all the Idol finalists sound so great on their own, but when they have to participate a group singalong, they instantly devolve to the level of a fourth-grade remedial school play? Egad. This is why I have never attended a concert on any American Idol tour. The elimination show-opening medleys are always tough to take, but tonight's was especially bad, as the final five continued their Neil Diamond-desecrating work from the previous night. Oh well. I guess I should just be happy that my man Neil is getting some attention. They say there's no such thing as bad publicity, and there's no better publicity than being on Idol, no matter what the context.

So after a hot-April-mess performance of songs from Hot August Night and other classic Neil albums, Ryan paid a quick visit in the audience with "rockin'" AmIdol alums/Fox Reality Channel talking heads Constantine Maroulis and Gina Glocksen. (Ooh, hubba hubba--David Cook is fine and all, but my heart still belongs to Constantine. It was nice to see that smoldering Blue Steel stare of his again.)

Then Ryan feebly attempted to defuse the crazy-Paula rumors stemming from her stumble last night (when she critiqued a second song Jason had yet to sing), defending her as a member of the Idol "family."

Well, every family has wacky relative or two, so why should the Idol cast be any different?

So then it was on to the business at hand: elimination. Jason Castro was summoned by Ryan first, and--true to my somewhat controversial prediction last night, and contrary to much message board speculation--Jason was once again safe. As was this season's other tween-friendly finalist, David Archuleta.

Ashley Ferl wannabes of the world, rejoice!

After a commercial break and some requisite Coca-Cola-shilling, David Cook was also sent through to safety (no surprise there). So my bottom-two prediction of Syesha Mercado and Brooke White was realized. But was my other guestimate--that Syesha would ultimately be the one to exit stage left--also correct? The suspense was killing me.

Well, naturally we wouldn't find this out for a while.

First Natasha Bedingfield performed and shamelessly flirted with David A. (I think she and David C. would make a better couple, personally), and then, during the call-in Q&A, Simon Cowell shamelessly flirted with his childhood sweetheart Tara, the first girl he kissed at age 9. It just might have been the first unscripted Q&A moment this season. It sure seemed a lot less scripted than Paula's odd Jason Castro critique last night!

Then Syesha and Brooke's misery--and my joy--was further prolonged with a pre-elimination performance by the man of the hour, Neil Diamond, crooning his pretty amazing new single "Pretty Amazing Grace." I'm sure some Ashley Ferl-aged viewers thought he was just some boring old fuddy-duddy, but I have to say Neil is one cool cat for a 67-year-old. He's still cooler than David Archuleta, who's like a fourth Neil's age.

Anyway, the axe finally fell--and, contrary to my prediction, it was Brooke who got cut, NOT Syesha.

Brooke actually started off as my top female pick of this season. I admit I had a bit of a girl-crush on her at first. And she certainly had some crushworthy moments over the past few weeks, most notably her acoustic take on Pat Benatar's "Love Is A Battlefield." But recently Idol had become quite a battlefield for Brooke, especially when it came to her constant babbling interruption of the judges. Anyway, I liked her, but she had to go sooner or later. After all, I've been saying since episode one that this season is all about the males.

Brooke's exit tonight was probably the most melodramatic and weepy since Alaina Whitaker's. The poor woman obviously didn't want to perform her swan song ("Can't I just say thank you?" she pleaded to Ryan, as he shoved a microphone into her trembling hand), but they forced her to sing anyway, even as Ryan himself was dabbing her runny eyes with Kleenex. Brooke choked back sobs throughout her performance, and to be honest, I actually preferred this version of "I Am I Said," because it had real raw emotion to it. And it was Brooke's emotional vulnerability that I admired about her in the first place.

However, I didn't admire the way she shrugged off David Cook when he tried to put his comforting manly arm around her. What a fool! I don't care if she's married...I don't care if she's married to Brad freakin' Pitt...NO right-minded, red-blooded woman should rebuff an advance from David The C.

And with that, Brooke left the Idol battlefield. I can't imagine Syesha will last another week--I'm pretty surprised she made it to the top four, really--but we'll have to wait until next week to see if I'm right. Next week is "Rock 'N' Roll Week," by the way, so Syesha will certainly have her work cut out for her.

Seacrest out...

Brooke was my favorite. I'm sad to see her go, but I'm definitely looking forward to her album. She'd be a good opening act for Carly Simon who also seems to be a fan if the article I read today is to be believed.

LP: Did Brooke shrug off David Cook or was he pushing her further out on the stage? It looked like the latter to me. If he was trying to put his arm around her, he certainly didn't get very close! I hope she gets it together for the exit interviews.

I am sort of joking, #1...I don't think she pushed him away in a MEAN way--my impression was he tried to put his arm around her but she stepped away, too oblivious and lost in the moment to notice. Her loss!

3. Yahoo! Music User -
I was hoping Brooke could hang on for another week and Syesha would get the axe this week. I hope she does make an album. She is a gifted and charming talent.

Bye, Bye Brook...It's about time! Next to go should be Jason Castro who by the way is votefortheworst (VFTW) next "worst" pick to keep in the show. GET HIM OUT NEXT WEEK! by voting for one of the others

Hi LP: I'm with you about Neil Diamond...he is the best entertainer! When I am at his concerts I get goosebumps up and down my body with every song he sings. Too bad none of the idol wannabes came close to his intensity. I was deeply disappointed. Take care.

I've liked Jason Castro from the beginning, but I agree that he doesn't seem to be trying anymore. Did anyone else notice that he was mumbling something as he was called out on the stage? Wonder what that was about?

Anyways, I was a little surprised that Brooke got the boot. But only a little. I thought with the VFTW backing that she would have stayed this week. But it was her time. I think the stress was getting to her.

Just my opinion, though...

This show puts a LOT of stress on its contestants. I mean, there's song rehearsal (choosing a song, then learning the lyrics, then making it your own, then facing a mentor, then doing it off the air before the show), then photo shoots, interviews, music video, a group medley (with choreography), there is the stress of being the center of gossip, performing for over 20 million people, and the hope for staying another week. All this...in 6 days time, then the cycle repeats. Brooke was just another who fell victim to these stresses. She was astounding at first, and had her weak performances here and there, but like any other performer who has ever been on this show: she's human.

I knew that Brooke wouldn't make it to the final two, but she could have held on another week. Talking about holding on another week...Jason DIDN'T DESERVE TO MAKE IT TO THE TOP 4. Sorry for ranting like that, but that's the truth. He's lost his will-power for this competition and there's a good chance he'll just be pummeled next week (Rock and Roll Week everybody!!) with his droning voice.

I hope Brooke ends up having a successful career in music, because she definitely has the potential to.

I believe the crazy rumor circulating that Ryan tried to diffuse was that "the idol judges are scripted and that paula somehow missed her cue".
I think it has been obvious since the start of the top 12 that it will be final face-off between the two Davids.

I am very sorry to see Brooke go. She displayed vulnerability that made it difficult for her but her talent was always there. She will have a successful career and I look forward to hearing more of her in the future.

OK That's it! I am offically not watching Idol anymore! Not because Brooke left. Not because JarJar should have been eliminated. Not because David Cook was left hug hanged (LP-sometimes sarcasm doesn't transfer to the written word well, does it?) written word well...say that ten times fast. Ummm what was I saying?

Sorry. I had an Amtrak thought and it derailed. No I am not watching anymore because...because...Oh who am I kidding?! It beats watching Farmer Wants a Wife or Supernanny (Brooke's next reality show maybe??) Oh, and Lindsey...you are SOOOO gonna hate me for this but, I didn't like Neil's new song. Which is ok. We can't blindly like everything an artist does. Right?

Lastly, I hope Brooke would tour with someone more contemporary than Carly Simon. I really never got the comparison.

oh, and Ryan...That's REALLY A STUPID HAIRCUT!! Just saying that as a loving member of the family. And if a member of the family can't tell you, "THAT'S A REALLY REALLY STUPID HAIRCUT!!" then who can?

11. Miss R. -
HAHAHAHA...I'm glad someone else noticed the hand David Cook reached out to her. I only noticed because I watch everything HE does with microscopic precision, concentration and detail...

I expected Brooke to go home today, poor thing was a mess. Kudos to her for getting through most of the song. Can't believe she tried to START OVER....AGAIN!!

Ryan's defense of Paula was a cop-out.

Simon's first crush was the greatest thing ever hahaha.

How did Natasha Bedingfield see David Cook stand up to greet her, and completely ignore him for ARCHULETA?!? She's 26, he's like 12!

First time in weeks Jason Castro didn't sound like he was smoking up before the show LOL.

12. Carrie -
Isn't it strange that the most "sensitive and vulnerable" one walked away from her fellow contestants as if she was done with the whole ACT?

13. kelly -
Even though I enjoyed Brooke's vocals at times I was glad to see her leave.
She was too emotional and I hated her rebuttals as she was judged after
her performances..........reminded me of Paula and the many times I mute
the sound as she painfully speaks to the contestants.

but here we are now with the remaining 4. If America was voting on talent
Jason should leave next but my guess is that it will be Syesha who by the
way does have a good voice.

I am hoping that America will do the right thing and vote on talent. My
pick is David Cook. David A. has a beautiful voice but I find him boring
and predictable. My guess is that the young 12-16 year olds votes will
make him the next American Idol.

Wake up America.........vote for DAVID COOK!!

Re Carrie #14. You know, Carly said in her interview that we would be surprised that at least one of the people pretending to be caring and shy was NOT who she pretended to be. Hmmm. Could it have been Brooke who was sweetsy-American Pie until she lost? It was her time two weeks ago. Started off a big fan of hers, but a dark, catty side started showing a few weeks ago [backed up by her constant back talk to the judges]. She lost her shine and I felt she was not who she pretended to be.

Too much rant, but just wanted that nagging feeling about her off my chest. Hope I am wrong, and she does well.

HEY! How could nobody mention how frigging cute David A. was when he found out he was safe. Now THAT was pure surprise and genuine reaction. He is wearing on me, but that was really cute.

Sayesha should have stayed. Broadway - yes. But that is not all this girl has and she is getting better each week. Next week, as LP opines, will be a real telling theme for her, though. Til then . . .

15. Lady Jane -
I am hoping that if/when Brooke makes an album after this, it is back to the Brooke we saw in the beginning of the show. I think she had some growth, but I felt she was more enjoyable before she was influenced (oops I meant trained and advised) by the star makers.

Hope to see a REAL BROOKE album soon.

16. Paul G -
well that does it for my idol season. no need to watch any more cause i strongly dislike every one of the ones left except for Sy.

17. Yahoo! Music User -
i, for one, hate the humble, melinda-doolittle-act david a. puts on every week. maybe the kid is sincerely shocked every week that he's safe (which i find rather hard to believe, since he has to know he's like the judges' little prize pony) but, gosh, is it annoying. & i really don't understand the appeal of him...i mean of course the kid can sing, but he's SO boring. he sings the same song every week! & they're the kind of songs my grandparents listen to.

18. Hannah -
i was thoroughly embarrassed for all of the contestants during their neil diamond medley tonight. it was literally painful for me to watch, because it was just so darn cheesy.

19. thehawkxxx13 -
i for one believe the final 2 should be david cook and syesha with david a in 3rd and jason gone next week but we all kno that wont happen little archie has the 12-16 year old girls and the 45-65 year old ladies backing him so he will probably win it all but at this point i could care less all my favorites are gone lol rami, kristy, chikeze so it dont matter to me but ill watch anyway and call in for sy only becuase david c has the support to get him there
also in regards to #16 said about what carley said (omg did that make sense) did anyone notice right after they anounced brooke was going home they showed kristy (klc) in the audience and she busted out in a huge smile hmmmmmm...... maybe there is some truth to that rumor

20. Lady Jane -
I say it is time to get rid of the mentors (obviously next season). I like a lot of the mentors, but I'm not so sure they are as helpful to the contestants as say working each week with vocal coaches. If they had several coaches and worked with different ones, I think they would be gaining more knowledge in the areas such as breathing techniques which have tremendous affects on the "pitchiness" of their voices. They might get a better feel of their vocal range and so be better prepared to choose a song in the correct key and that stay within their range.

Along with the mentors, lets eliminate the themes. These performers need to be able to perform in their chosen genre so they will have the best opportunity to do well, and we will be able to choose based on who they purport to be.

And while I am revamping the show let's change the voting system. First change, limit voting!!!! Next, let judges have a say in the outcome. (Not the 3 current judges please! They have already shown us their biases and make no attempt to "judge" fairly) Maybe have the vocal coaches as a judging panel?

Report the vote tallies for each performer so everyone can see the results. (Votes tallied and reported independently).
