Clay, Remolded

Posted Mon May 5, 2008 2:30pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

So the new Clay Aiken publicity photo landed in my inbox today...

Yikes.

Now, keep in mind that I expected Clay to look, well...different.

After all, lately Clay has undergone enough makeovers to rival his fellow quickchange diva Madonna.

For instance, there was that brunette K.D. Lang shag he rocked at the season 5 American Idol finale, when he shocked his "lookalike" idolizer Michael Sandecki as well as the entire Fox viewing audience.

Then he packed on about 30 pounds of body fat (inspiring nasty nicknames like "Clay Bacon" and "Clay Tummy-Achin'"), and probably twice that weight in spackled-on makeup, for his role in Broadway's Spamalot.

And still, when I unwittingly checked my email this morning like I do on any uneventful Monday, I was in no way prepared for Clay's latest look.

Take a deep breath and scroll down:

Oh, my Aiken eyes!

Sorry, I don't mean to be cruel. I love me some Clay. Really, I do. But this photo frightens me.

So what do you think of Clay 3.0? Post your thoughts below--and try not to spamalot, OK?

Umm...I don't like the hair. But I beleive that he will always look akward....but its Clay. Great voice not so great looks.

2. nixfix7 -
I agree. he's gonna look the same no matter how many trips to the salon he endures. All we can so is sit back wait to see if 3.0 is the lucky winner.

I don't like Clay as a blond

4. Gael R -
I like him better with darker hair

5. kasslynne -
They couldn't afford any props? Not even a chair for the poor boy to sit in?

6. Swan -
If he weren't so obviously made-up with cosmetic products, he might look good. But all that make-up makes him look very... high-maintenance. Very effeminate. Very Clay. It's the same old Clay, just with different hair.

I think he looks fine LP. LOL. I sincerely do. But it' all in the eye of the beholder eh? As you said previously about his QVC marketing, whatever we think he will probably laugh his way to the bank. I love you LP. Keep the columns comin' sista. I am watching Mario on DWTS right now btw. I only knew him from your article way back about him, but I've come to love him. He seems like such a well intented 21 year old. I hope to see a story on his win on DWTS from you in a few weeks. Peace & love to my fave blogger...

NEW YORK - Clay Aiken is realistic about his niche in the musical landscape.

"I'm not cool, you know what I mean? I'm not gonna lie," the good-humoured singer told The Associated Press in a recent interview. "I'm not trying to be Justin Timberlake. Thank God we have him, but I'm not him. . . . I'm not gonna bring anybody's sexy back."

Aiken embraces his pop-light sensibility in "On My Way Here," his first album of all-new material in more than four years.

The 29-year-old "American Idol" alum - he placed second to Ruben Studdard in the Fox show's second season - was the first non-winner to release a successful album, "Measure of a Man," which went double platinum in 2003. He followed that up with two cover albums: "Merry Christmas With Love" and "A Thousand Different Ways."

The North Carolina native has racked up more life experience since his "Idol" days, and felt a deep, personal connection to the songs on the disc.

"When I (did) the first album, I ain't been through nothin', you know? . . . But now I've gone through some crap, and I've gone through some good things, and I've started thinking, 'Oh, wow, I know what that song's saying, I've done that, I've experienced that, that's happened to me,' " he mused in his Southern drawl.

The ballad "The Real Me," about living in the spotlight, hits close to home: "It's amazing how I meet people all the time who think they know me. . . . I just did an interview a minute ago with someone (who) said, 'You used to be a nanny right? That's so great.' And I was like, nooo!' "

"So many people think I'm just a sweet, happy person all the time," he added, laughing.

Aiken made his Broadway debut as Sir Robin in "Monty Python's Spamalot" in January, and recorded "On My Way Here" in his spare time. Aiken ends his run in the Tony Award-winning musical May 4.

"Truth is, I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I have," he said. "I really have had a great time, and I've loved the people I've worked with."

Will he return to The Great White Way?

"You know, (if) the right thing came along, absolutely, I'd love to do that again," he said. "But you know what? If the right 'anything' came along, I'd be happy to try it."

Director Mike Nichols seems to be quite impressed with Clay Aiken. I have seen Clay a couple of times on Jimmy Kimmel and he was really funny.
