David Vs. David: Idol's Ultimate Psychological Struggle

Posted Mon May 19, 2008 1:32pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

You know, I don't think I've ever been so conflicted, so existentially torn, about an American Idol finale. Seriously, I feel like I'm in the middle of some sort of odd reality-TV love triangle, forced to choose between Mr. Right and Mr. Right Now. Because my heart is rooting for one man, yet my brain tells me to vote for the other. So, should I follow my heart or my head when making my official pick for the season 7 winner? I just don't know...

See, my heart fully belongs to David Cook. I've been Team Cook almost since day one; conversely, I have never, EVER understood all the rammed-down-the-throat hype surrounding David Archuleta (a boy who can muck up his lyrics repeatedly, sap all the soul out of a Chris Brown song, and sing an entire season's worth of material with his eyes wide shut, and yet somehow never once end up in the bottom three).

David Cook is the contestant for whom I might actually fork over my hard-earned Yahoo! paycheck to download an album or watch in concert. David Cook is the contestant whose name I can more easily imagine seeing in lights (and not just because his surname's much shorter, thus saving a whole lot of electricity in this green-conscious era). The bottom line is David Cook is the true rock star to me, the total package, the real deal.

David Cook is "Mr. Right."

So...why am I conflicted about following my heart and endorsing Cook? Honestly, it's only because I care. Hoping that Cook actually loses is an act of true tough love; I only have his best interests at heart. See, I fear that winning American Idol could actually RUIN David Cook's career. And I don't want that.

Let's fact it, AmIdol still has little cred in the rock 'n' roll world. Chris Daughtry was obviously better off losing, and Cook--who's long been promoted by Fox/19 as Daughtry 2.0, or Daughtry With Hair--would probably be better off as well. I mean, just LOOK at all the humiliating hokeyness the Idol producers force Cook to mime along to on the show: those dorky disco-dancing medleys, those lamely lip-synched Ford car promos, etc. Do you think that's the kind of puppetmastered career Cook wants for himself? I say let Cook come in second, then he'll go off and sign his own record deal in record time (probably a more lucrative deal than he could secure as the "winner" of Idol's iron-clad recording contract), and he will make the sort of album he WANTS to make--not the kind of watered-down, Diane Warren-penned, Goo Goo Dolls-lite pap that BMG would probably force him to record.

If David Cook loses Wednesday night, in a way it'll actually be a victory. He's won already, really. So, my heart is still Team Cook, but my brain is cheering on Team Archuleta.

David Archuleta is "Mr. Right Now." Even Vote For The Worst agrees!

Archie is probably going to win anyway; this year's Idol viewing audience is the series' oldest-skewing yet, so you just know all the grannies and shut-ins are going to speed-dial Li'l David's voting number to ensure their golden boy wins. These older viewers adore Archie because he's what they want young people to be: They want so badly to believe that today's teenagers are lovably non-threatening dorks, not profanity-and-textese-spewing emo boys like Danny "TMTH" Noriega or stoner dudes like Jason "I Was Thinking Bob Marley!!" Castro. So I predict Archie will win and go on to become the even gentler, kinder Clay Aiken. Meanwhile, Cook will become the hotter, hairier Daughtry, and will probably outsell Archuleta in the long run.

You know, since I've already assumed Archuleta is going to win, maybe this entire blog is my subconscious coping mechanism, my way of bracing myself for that inevitable dreaded outcome. Wow, I'm getting pretty psychoanalytical (or psychobabbling) here, huh? Well, if you want even more in-depth Idol analysis, check out other experts' predictions and picks HERE.

And in the meantime, root for David Cook! I mean Archuleta! Damn, I don't know what I want anymore...

This show is a joke. It's not taken seriously by the recording industry because if it were, they'd be all over the winners. It's like every hometown has a singer, guitar player, drummer that's really good and the locals honor them as heroes. But are they good enough to make REAL music? Nope. They're good at cover tunes and that's all they'll ever be - just like these two wankers. A real musician is one who knows not only how to sing someone else's material but also how to write it, produce it and perform it for every ounce they can squeeze out of it. David and David are just hometown boys with a lucky break and they don't live, eat and breathe music like the professionals did to make it where they are now. Again, talent shows are a joke and if they really produced unknown greats, don't you think there'd be more of them around put on by every big recording company out there?

I totally agree...I too struggle with the desire for David Cook to...lose...not because I am a BIG fan of the other David...But because as mentioned..some of the "losers" have been true winners. I thought maybe...just maybe...David C was out last week and Syesha was in...but...alas...that was not the case..I WILL BE CHEERING ON DAVID COOK TONIGHT....and refrain from voting....GOOD LUCK TO BOTH THE DAVIDS....

#75,

I would not worry about the cheerleaders and David Cook. He is a cute bartender who plays guitar and sings great. I have no doubt that after highschool, he has had as much short term female attention as he wants.

david cook, and not just cause thats my brothers name. (really) . david archuletta is a clone of every other boy band wanna be. David Cook is original and dare I say as talented as Chris Daughtry{ who i also voted for). Team Cook rocks!!!!!! And I should know ......its my maiden name.

I'm embarrassed to say that I've watched AI since the beginning and I have even purchase a few of the winners CD's. YUK!!!! I love David Cook and that is why I want him to lose. I could still kick myself for not downloading his awesome CD that was available on Amazon before AI yanked it. I want him to be able to make a good album and not a lame, POP, crappy AI CD. I think Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood made it IN SPITE of winning AI. I hope David C knows that losing is in his best interests.

113. Patty -
David Cook is awsome. I would definitely buy his CD's. I love his sultry voice and the way he makes every song sound new.

114. Christopher -
Your thinking is skewed. I cannot believe as such a talented and famous writer you haven't checked your facts. All of the top 10 could be signed by the American Idol group. AI gets first rights on all of them. It is part of the contract. Daughtery is under their label and management now. David Cook deserves to win. He is committed to music. He is the most versatile, talented one. David Archuleta is still thinking about what he wants to go to college for. Does he want to be a doctor or not. Give me a break. DA may win but, it would be better, more just and everything right with the world if David Cook wins.

115. Casey -
I hope to see Daivid Cook win. Eventhough, they both are great singers, I would just like to see Cook take the win. Not only is he hott but he also has a awesome voice. So GOOD LUCK DAVID COOK!

COOK! COOK! COOK! I do fear the "winner" factor, but I think he is by far the most talented and has been my pick since auditions. I would, likewise, theoretically pay for his music or enjoy his show. I wouldn't touch Baby David with a 10-foot pole. He belongs on Christian-lite radio or worse. Eeeeew.

Go David Cook! I'm actually voting this season for the 1st time.

I could care less who wins at this point. I'm going to watch the NCIS season finale. David & David sound just like everyone else, no uniqueness to them at all. David A. walks funny (if anyone ever notices) and David C. looks like he has a combover! LOL! When it's all said and done I would have bought an album of Jason's or Brooke's because they had truely unique sounds, they just needed a few more practices performing! AI has really failed this year!

ARCHULETA ALL THE WAY BABY

rah-koh-mah and JoeT-- As a vocal performance teacher, I can tell you that as much as you might like Carrie U and/or country, from a vocal perspective she was not the best AI winner vocalist. I will certainly concede that she is pretty, well-dressed, and has a certain amount of charisma, but country is not known by any means for the quality of its vocalists. AI has had many excellent vocalists in the top 12's year after year and many don't win because they are not the total package. The most talented vocalist WINNER of AI has to be (and I know my vocal performance teacher collegues agree) Kelly Clarkson hands down. As for the David's, yes David A has a nice voice, but he still has room for improvement particularly in the breath control department, but he is young and the voice doesn't fully mature until 30's. David C has a good voice also and has probably had vocal training in the past. He still yells sometimes at the top of his range. However, overall, he seems to be the total package with versatility. And, please everyone stop with the Josh Groban comparisons with David A. he is not vocally in the same league with Josh Groban nor has he shown that he can handle classical music in other languages. David C should win but probably won't. PS I work with young girls (singers ages 14-18), and they all like David C and don't find David A cute or appealing at all. I wonder how old the David A fans really are?

Kat - Jason and Brooke..Really? That is who you were backing? Even though I don't like little David he doesn't sound like everyone else (his wheezing alone separates him) and David C sounds like everyone else? I don't think AI has failed, perhaps check the batteries in your hearing aid. They may be failing...
