The Final Idol Fight: Has Cook Been Knocked Out?

Posted Tue May 20, 2008 9:52pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

About six years ago, my mom phoned me, spasticaly sputtering, barely able to spit her words out because she was laughing so hard. She'd just seen some tone-deaf wackjob with delusions of grandeur get flat-out insulted by some surly flattopped Brit, on some hilarious new talent show called American Idol. She ordered me to turn on Fox immediately, I did as I was told (she's my mother, after all)...and my life hasn't been the same since.

I'm not sure if I should thank her or scorn her for turning me on to this TV obsession. Probably the former. So I've thanked her over the years by taking her to various Idol events, like last year's Jordin-vs.-Blake finale (read blog here) and Yahoo!'s Nissan Live Sets show with Kelly Clarkson (see blog). And tonight I escorted my mom--who, like me, is a proud member of the Team Cook cheerleading squad--to the season 7 David-vs.-David showdown at L.A.'s Nokia Theater.

Here's me and my mom, Leslie Parker (aka "LP Sr."), in front of the Nokia right after we collected our tickets from will call--when we were super-excited because we'd just spotted Idol alums Justin Guarini, Kimberly Caldwell, Constantine Maroulis, and Chris Sligh milling about, and we were about to see David The C rock our Idol-logo'd socks off:

Gee, and you wonder where I inherit my strong opinions from, huh?

Anyway, after the show we weren't quite as excited. We were actually pretty worried that we'd soon be hanging up our Team Cook cheerleading pom-poms for good. But more on our post-show reaction later. First, let's discuss what went down inside the Nokia tonight...

When we first entered the theater, we felt like we'd arrived at the official site of Team Cook HQ. There were noticeably more pro-Cook glitterglue signs than Archie ones ("Maybe Archuleta's fans are too embarrassed to hold signs," my mother quipped in her typical Parker-smarmy manner), and when the crowd-warmup comedian dude demanded that audience members cheer for their fave Dave, Cook elicited much more deafening, Beatles-at-JFK-style shrieks.

Then the Davids came out dressed in satin prizefighters' robes (part of the evening's whole hokey boxing-match motif), and David C. sure filled out that robe much more nicely than his punier opponent. Cook looked like the real heavyweight, the true rock star. Then Cook sang U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I've Looking For" (as astutely chosen for him by Clive Davis) in full Bono-messiah mode. "I have goosbumps," my mom murmured to me. It sure seemed like 19/Fox/BMG had found what they were looking for. They'd found their new Idol, all right.

But then, it almost appeared that Cook was trying to throw this match. No, the scenario wasn't as bad as Jason Castro's forgetting of lyrics and mouthing "Don't vote!" to the cameras, but the whole situation was still pretty suspicious. And very disappointing.

First, Archie countered in round 1 with the Clive-selected "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" (which my mom jokingly retitled "Don't Let My Dad Come Down On Me"), and though I've made it clear over the course of my many Idol blogs that I am no Archuleta fan, I must say he seemed in it to win it. To continue with the multi-paragraph boxing analogy: David A. was up against the ropes, so he came out swinging. He delivered the kind of big, bold performance necessary to stay in the game. At times his demeanor bordered on desperate, as if he was a little too hungry, as if he wanted it a little too much...but even I have to admit he did good. The judges thought so, too: Simon went so far as to declare Archie the winner of round 1.

Uh-oh.

Round 2 consisted of "coronation songs" selected from a batch of the 10 most popular original tunes that were available for online voting. David C. went first, singing an uptempo pop-rocker called "Dream Big." I personally appreciated the fact that he didn't choose a typical "I Believe A Moment Like This Is My Now"-style ballad (after all, being forced to perform such stylistically inappropriate finale ballads led to the downfall of other rockin' top-two contenders, like Bo Bice and Blake Lewis, in the past). "Dream Big" was sort of "Summer Of '69"/"Jesse's Girl"-retro in vibe, and it suited Cook well, but it wasn't the kind of chest-thumping, "Star-Spangled Banner"-esque victory anthem that gets Idol voters all verklempt...like Archie's chosen coronation song, a more formulaic, Star Search-y tearjerker titled "In This Moment." So Simon declared Archie the winner of round 2 as well. My mother and I subsequently booed...but I don't think Simon heard us over the din of gleefully screaming Archuleta fans, who'd suddenly gotten much louder.

LP Sr. and I were starting to worry now. But we were even more distressed after round 3.

See, for the final head-to-head match, the Davids sang songs of their own choosing. Archuleta wisely did what most past contestants have done: He picked his favorite, most memorable song of the season, in his case the five-hanky John Lennon weeper "Imagine." He sang it as well as he did back during '60s Week, and he naturally got his third standing ovation of the night.

So what did Cook choose? "Billie Jean"? "Hello"? "Hungry Like The Wolf," even? Nope. He sang a draggy, forgettable, never-performed Collective Soul song, "The World I Know."

What the frick?

This is when my mom and I started to wonder if Cook was deliberately trying to throw the competition. Had Jeff Archuleta's goons threatened him or something? Or maybe, as I postulated in my last Idol blog, Cook also thought he might be better off coming in second? How else to explain such a so-so song selection at this crucial stage in the game? Whatever the reason, Cook seemed cooked. Simon declared the show a total "knockout" by Archuleta, and then my mom and I slumped out of the Nokia with Ruben Studdard's sad exit music not-so-celebrating us home.

Here's our mother/daughter Team Cook post-show reaction, with the wind taken slightly out of our pom-poms:

Oh well, at least we got some cross-generational family bonding out of the experience. I'm glad I have a healthier relationship with my parent than Archie reportedly has with his stage dad, who'd probably be furious if his golden-boy son didn't win. So I guess Li'l David must be relieved, now that he pretty much seems to have run away with the season 7 Idol title.

But we'll just have to wait to find out which David really is the seventh American Idol. Come back tomorrow for the big announcement and all the behind-the-scenes goings-on in the press room and on the red carpet.

Seacrest out...

Check your facts. Archuletta, his father, AND the producer's of the show say they have no problem with Archuletta's father. So why are you hating on him so much? At least he cares about his son.

Watching the auditions & the 1st few shows, my personal favorite was David A. Unfortunately, he didn't keep my :undivided attention" very long. David C. is clearly the better singer, preformer, & all around winner! This is the 1st AMERICAN IDOL where I "switched" favorites!!! Go David COOK!!!!

123. Honeylamb -
David Archuleta can sing, but bores me to tears and forces me to fast forward on the DVR when he performs. David Cook has me locked in and always wanting more!!! It comes down to who entertains me and w/o question...that is David Cook. I will buy his cd.

I predict that D.C. is the winner, since getting praised by Simon is the kiss of death many times in the past. In past I have agreed with Simon, but this time I don't think that any of the judges were hearing and seeing the same show as me. We'll see if the voting public will vote like the judges: nasally boring and stage-uncomfortable balladeer or hip and brave rocker that can do a ballad with integrity and open eyes.

My boyfriend's family came down for a cookout last night, and when it was idol time we all gathered in the living room for some D vs. D. While I am hardcore 100% Cook, my future sister in law, whom I adore, is pretty much all for Archie. She thinks he is sincere and sweet, and that he REALLY wants to win it. When she said she just wanted to give him a hug, I said I just want to smack him. (We're family so it's all in good fun.) I must say that as much as I can't stand that 17year old ballad singing wussy, he did do a great job last night. I still didn't vote for him though. Cook is the deserved winner. Not just because he's my favorite, but because he could sell CD's and concert tickets. Besides the teeney bopper wave of fans Archie has, who will really buy an Archie CD or pay to see a show? The teeney bopper fan wave changes so often that I don't see a long term fan base for Archie. Cook on the other hand could rock it out for the next 30 years easy! So after the judges sway towards Archie, we will see tonight if America has some sense.

The night belonged to David A. PERIOD. This is a contest and he wins. David C. makes the worst decision possible at the most important time in the competition--singing a song he had never sung before?!?!?! He is talented, but last night he came in a distant second.

Okay, my mom and I watch this show religiously. So we think that the judges were trying to get David A. to win becuase they probably think that DC would do better on his own. I thought that DC did wonderful. I actually loved his version of the COllective Soul song. I don't like the original, but I would definitly download DC version.

To me DA just seems fake. His smile and everything about him seems fake, almost creepy.

But it is up to the voters. Personally I just want DC to make a CD so I can buy it!!!!!!!!

david archuletas not bad. i dont understand why people are so like oh hes not that good blahblahlbah hes AMAZING
f all of yoU!

129. Yahoo! Music User -
#184--sounds like DC is already working on his rationalization for losing.

130. Yahoo! Music User -
So why didn't DC pick a song everybody knows AND one he can get behind. DUMB DUMB boy!

131. Deb -
David Cook rocks!!!!! Good job to both of them.

132. Writeheart -
To YMU #179,LoL. What a great idea! And a great song choice too. Simon and Garfunkle, right?

133. Yahoo! Music User -
doesn't matter if Archuletta wins anyway. Cook's gonna sell more albums, as more people would listen to his stuff.

Fact: Archuletta will never be able to sing any of Cook's songs but Cook can sing everything that kid has belted out this season.

besides, that kid's nasal voice and those ballads are boring. *rolls eyes*

134. Writeheart -
To YMU #187, Nonsense! David Cook is simply stating that he stayed true to himself and took risks like he has all season long. You may be amazed how far that takes him.

All of Archie's songs sound alike, but apparently that is what the judes want. Nothing original. I've been a Cook fan all season, and texted so many votes for him I lost count. I hope simon declaring Archie as the winner works against him.I will never want to watch Archuletta in anyth8ing he does.

David Cook's true colors show . . . this guy is really smooth. At the beginning of the show, Ryan had both of them on stage and was asking about how it felt to be there and blah, blah, blah. Archuleta spoke FIRST and said something nice and genuine about being there and Cook. Cook came with . . ."'anything I say would just be trite at this point'" Well, DC, it's not about one up-ping each other. Too bad you couldn't have wrote something like "Give Back" on your hand again, or, wished a belated mother's day . . . It's easy to see what this guy was/is doing. It's about being sincere and genuine. Anything you said would have been more congenial that your comment about being trite.

DA is a talented young man. Cook is so run of the mill predictable. Cook will win but I'll never buy anything this guy does.

David Archuleta has a voice that far exceeds DC. DC will have the popular vote, unfortunately.

# 182,

I don't think there are to many people that posted that said he was bad, ok maybe him doing " Imagine " was bad but the rest was good, it was the Judges and the way it looked like they were trying to sway the vote and falling all over him, I am sure after the show Simon made him a nice glass of warm milk, Paula tucked him in bed and Randy, I don't want to go there.
It was a final that they don't vote on and since they don't have a vote they should of at least given each one equal comments and not fall over either one.

Just My Thoughts...... GO PENS!!!!

To suggest The World I Know is not popular and is a bad song choice is plain silly. The reason no one hears that much out of Collective Soul is that for their past 2 albums (both platinum by the way) they have been without a record label behind them, and choose to distribute via iTunes and Target. Go see one of their shows live, or look at what they did on Billboard when they qualified with a record label. I didn't like U2 as a song choice, and if you want to compare apples to apples, sing the same song, don't allow the contestants choose from a list of 10. Archuletta is good, but he has no stage presence, no charisma, and will wind up like Katherine McPhee and Taylor Hicks (dumped from their record label). David Cook on the other hand will be successful (potentially as successful as Carrie Underwood). No offense Chris Daughtry but you have the personality of a tree stump, but you make great music. If Cook wanted to cinch the victory he could have actually cover "Home" or "Feels Like Tonight" by Daughtry, which likely would have reminded viewers the mistake that was Taylor Hicks. Archuletta is Taylor Hicks minus the likability. Who will go see his shows in 5 years??? The 9 year olds who love him now because he is cute? I'd like to see what Cook could have done with a seasoned artist (Archuletta's Dad) helping him with the arrangements....well I shouldn't say that because he didn't need help and is likely more in tune with what the audience wants. All that said I still like Cook to win it!

DC
Oh yes, he's been consistent, consistenly the same old thing --

DA
Too bad people hold talent, good looks and youth against this guy.
