Seacrest Out: The Reality Rocks Idol Wrapup

Posted Wed May 21, 2008 10:53pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks
Those of you reading this entry probably know by now that American Idol history was made tonight, as the show had its first "rocker" winner in its seven-season history: David Cook. And those of you who are regular readers of this blog know I'm personally pretty psyched about this development...as is my even more pro-Cook mother, whom I took to the pre-finale showdown last night.

Well, tonight I was in professional mode, leaving the moms at home to go work the preshow red carpet and then camp out in the backstage press room during the actual main event. And judging by the huge whoops and hollers that resonated throughout the press room when David Cook's name was announced, it seems like many members of the media were pretty pro-Cook too. In fact, when David The C starting crying after his victory, some of the usually-hardened press people got verklempt as well. (I was one of them, natch.)

But before the big winner announcement and all the odd musical numbers that preceded it (Bryan Adams??? really???), I was stationed in front of the Nokia Theater with my fellow Yahoo! staffers, snagging interviews and photos. Since the show is over (and you all can watch it on TV anyway), I'll just wrap up with some bulletpoints of my personal behind-the-scenes highlights this evening:

-- The superfly So You Think You Can Dance kids showing up (season 4 of SYTYCD starts tomorrow, you know!!) and totally busting a move on the red carpet:

-- The delightful Melinda Doolittle revealing that she's finally releasing an album this summer:

-- Jon Peter Lewis confessing that he wants Kristy Lee Cook's phone number (JPL + KLC? that has a nice ring to it!) and answering "Michael Johns" when asked who he was rooting for:

-- Hilarious Chris Sligh answering "Jason Castro!" when asked who he was rooting for; griping "It drives a splinter right into my aorta!" when asked how he felt about contestants getting to play instruments this year (unlike last season, when Chris competed); comparing David Archuleta to Rick Astley (both "12-year-olds that sound like 50-year-olds"); and getting totally spooked when the scarily waxen-faced Janice Dickinson materialized beside him:

-- Chris Sligh then strutting his stuff with his old season 6 buddy Sanjaya Malakar:

-- Former rockin' runners-up Constantine Maroulis and Ace Young sharing a tender moment:

-- Another rockin' runner-up, Bo Bice, having a good hair day:

-- Lakisha Jones looking utterly stunning:

-- Adorable Paris Bennett announcing that her second album, out in November, will be called Simply Jazz and will consist solely of jazz standards (which will surely beautifully suit her old-school voice):

-- Jasmine Trias confessing that she was dying to meet fellow Filipina AmIdol contestant Ramiele Malubay:

-- Kevin Covais, aka Chicken Little, revealing that he has taken up acting and is starring in a soon-to-be-released "filthy" teen comedy called College:

-- Brandon Rogers alluding to plans for an Idol revue in Branson (I'm booking my vacation package now!):

-- Me getting to interview the thickly bearded members of ZZ Top, who predicted David Cook's win and announced "history will be made":

-- Me interviewing reality-TV pioneer and former Dancing With The Stars contender Jerry Springer:

-- Me chatting with season 2 champ Ruben Studdard right before he was ushered inside:

-- Carrie Underwood getting mobbed by reporters (so I didn't get to talk to her, sadly):

-- Jordin Sparks popping up in the press room mere moments after Cook was crowned, doling out advice for her worthy successor ("Get some sleep now, because you're not going to sleep for the next year!"):

And so, hard as it may be to believe, American Idol season 7 has come to a close. Wow, it seems like just yesterday Josiah Leming was blowing it with a misguided attempt at "Stand By Me," Simon Cowell was throwing a hissyfit over Kyle Ensley’s omission from the top 24, Danny "Some People Weren’t Lik-ing It" Noriega was snapping his head defiantly, Amanda Overmyer was gargling glass through "Carry On Wayward Son," the artist formerly known as Carly Hennessy, etc.

And now it's all over.

But hey, like I mentioned earlier, at least the equally fabulous Nigel Lythgoe-brainchild show So You Think You Can Dance is starting up tomorrow. So please keep visiting this space to get updates on that...and on the other music/reality shows that we're all obsessed with!

Seacrest out.

Wow great photos!

Thanks for the season LP.

Glad you got to talk to ZZ Top. David Cook singing with them was so outstanding. AWESOME!!!!

I am still flying high after the show tonight. Not only did David Cook win, Simon apologized and the whole show was great.

3. Burton -
I didn't post this season, but read your blog religeously. Thanks for the great recaps LP.

4. Lady Jane -
I hope to see all my new found cyberpals here. I will miss our wonderful discussions. Hope we will have a couple more before this one is over.

I loved it! I feel vindicated! Simon apologized for being a putz last night. Cook sings with ZZ Top--and my favorite song of theirs too! I got to see Cookie in his tidy whiteys on the Guitar Hero commercial. I got to see Chikezie sing. I loved the "Pips Audition." Hilarious!

And Cookie WON! The right person won this year and I couldn't be happier. Thanks for a great season, David. You were the only one I loved every week.

Hello LP Jr. (a special hello to Sr.): I am on Cloud 99. I was very happy to see Simon correct his error re: the KO and apologize. Below is what David Cook had to say about the apology and more (in case any of your readers are curious). I have enjoyed your columns LP, more than any other and I read them all (Ann Powers, Michael Slezak, etc.). Thank you. "Canadian Idol" begins June 3rd in my home country, and I wish you, Lady Jane, Rain C, Frankie, jsandzjamzz, writeheart, kawatteru, and so many many more of your regulars could share that with me (although I did notice a lot of Canadians are regular readers of yours' - maybe I'll see them elsewhere).

Q: What did Simon's apology tonight mean to you?
A: I didn't really know that the apology was warranted. I thought it was an opinion and nothing more. But at no point did I feel disrespected. I'm appreciative of the fact that he decided to apologize. An apology from Simon is a pretty rare gem.

Q: You were pretty emotional when you found out you won. What was going through your head at that moment?
A: That my music teacher, Mrs. Gentry, made me sing at a Christmas pageant in second grade and now I'm here. And so the ride's been pretty nuts. You couldn't write this. Maybe you can, but I can't.

Q: Did you think you were going to win?
A: I didn't. The respect that I have for David Archuleta is very much past a competitor. He has more talent at his age than I know what to do with at 25. So being able to share a stage with him is an honor for me. I kind of went into Tuesday just to have fun, so the fact that I walk out of here the next American Idol is not a testament to me so much as it's a testament to the other 23 contestants we had this season and to everybody behind the scenes.

Q: What was your favorite performance this season?
A: Of mine or somebody else's?

Q: Yours.
A: The last one! [Laughs.] I've been holding my breath for four months. Tonight was just about exhaling and enjoying what this show is and what it isn't.

Q: What kind of record do you want to make?
A: A good one — that's the kind of record I want to make!

Q: What do you hope to achieve after winning "American Idol"?
A: I actually walked into this with no expectations and I'm walking out of it with no expectations, and I think this show is a springboard, but it's still a crapshoot. I could easily walk out of this arena and just be a regular Joe tomorrow. I hope that's not the case. That's kind of up to everybody else.

Q: What was it like having your brothers in the audience?
A: For me, it just meant the whole experience [came] full-circle. In August, I stood in line in Omaha, Nebraska, at 5:30 in the morning when it was raining with no intention of auditioning. And now I'm here, and I got to share that moment with the same two people I stood in line with seven or eight months ago. So, yeah, it was a nice bookend.

I am very happy for David, his family and friends. With his eldest brother battling cancer, I am glad that this win is a happy moment in the Cook family's life. I hope his brother (as well as Luke Menard) recover soon.

8. Yahoo! Music User -
LP, Do you blog about "So You Think You Can Dance"? I hope so. *wink*

Glad to know my fave AI ever (tied with David Cook) Melinda Doolittle is releasing an album this summer.

Sorry Jon Peter Lewis. She's engaged. LOL.

I was happy to learn from your article above that Jasmine Trias confessed that she was dying to meet fellow Filipina AmIdol contestant Ramiele Malubay. Nice!

RE: "-- Me getting to interview the thickly bearded members of ZZ Top, who predicted David Cook's win and announced "history will be made":"

NOW I LIKE THEM EVEN MORE. LOL.

13. Nancy Markets You -
First of all, I really respect Simon for the apology he gave to David C. Wow. Next, I am still in SHOCK that David C actually won! I really believed that David A's fan base was too heavy to topple. He's such a genuinely sweet kid with a fabulous voice, yet he wasn't quite the whole package like David C is. So although I agreed with Simon that I would be happy with whichever David won, I am so happy it was David C! Now the waiting begins... almost 6 months until AI-8! AAGGHH!

14. Writeheart -
Thank you so much, YMU #6 for that interview posting! I started crying partway through, got mad because I couldn't see to read ****, then finally composed myself enough to continue. lol. How on God's green earth, or whoever/whatever anyone else believes in, could anyone think that THIS man, David Cook, is arrogant? His comment about his music teacher is what first opened my waterworks, by the way. For all of you teachers out there, listen up: You can make a difference in a young person's life with every word you say and this proves it! Do NOT take this lightly, I beg of you. Yes, it is harder in today's society not to be jaded, but there ARE real jewels to be found, diamonds in the rough. You never know when/if YOU may be getting flowers! Same goes for parents.

P.S. to Lyndsey....

I'm a late-comer to your blog, but count me in as a fan, though I don't always agree with you. I'd still like to hear your mom's thoughts on the finale, though. lol.

YEA BABY!!!!!!
LP, I read your blog religiously, but never felt the need to comment till know.
Cook wins. I feel validated!
Rock on Cookie, Rock on!

16. Yahoo! Music User -
LP! I've been reading your AI blog every week from here in the Japanese countryside. Loved every word and special shout out the LP Sr. I'm elated that David C has won. He had me at "Hello" and I hope hope hope they do not suppress the talent when making his album. It would be such a travesty.

Here's to all the word nerds!

Lynds...- THANK YOU FOR THIS SITE!!!

You made the season for me.

18. Yahoo! Music User -
LP: Would Haley Scarnato have gotten an invite if she wasn’t dating Blake? (I know you are a fan of Blake, so I had to ask to joke with you. lol). Thanks for the amazing columns this season. All the best to you and your mom.

19. Miss R. -
I'm definitely gonna keep reading, LP...thanks for the blog! Looking forward to the SYTYCD blog!

And YAY!! DAVID COOK!! Love him, so glad he won!! Even though I'm Canadian and couldn't vote...Americans did well, I'm proud!! LOL

20. KellyN -
My whole entire family was shocked. You could see the look on Cook's face that he was shocked that he won! But I'm sure it will turn out well for David #2!!!!

AP

AP - Rihanna on Friday described the horror she felt as her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown was biting and punching her during a violent argument in February, saying she saw "no soul in his eyes." "There was no… More »
