Seacrest Out: The Reality Rocks Idol Wrapup
Well, tonight I was in professional mode, leaving the moms at home to go work the preshow red carpet and then camp out in the backstage press room during the actual main event. And judging by the huge whoops and hollers that resonated throughout the press room when David Cook's name was announced, it seems like many members of the media were pretty pro-Cook too. In fact, when David The C starting crying after his victory, some of the usually-hardened press people got verklempt as well. (I was one of them, natch.)
But before the big winner announcement and all the odd musical numbers that preceded it (Bryan Adams??? really???), I was stationed in front of the Nokia Theater with my fellow Yahoo! staffers, snagging interviews and photos. Since the show is over (and you all can watch it on TV anyway), I'll just wrap up with some bulletpoints of my personal behind-the-scenes highlights this evening:
-- The superfly So You Think You Can Dance kids showing up (season 4 of SYTYCD starts tomorrow, you know!!) and totally busting a move on the red carpet:
-- The delightful Melinda Doolittle revealing that she's finally releasing an album this summer:
-- Jon Peter Lewis confessing that he wants Kristy Lee Cook's phone number (JPL + KLC? that has a nice ring to it!) and answering "Michael Johns" when asked who he was rooting for:
-- Hilarious Chris Sligh answering "Jason Castro!" when asked who he was rooting for; griping "It drives a splinter right into my aorta!" when asked how he felt about contestants getting to play instruments this year (unlike last season, when Chris competed); comparing David Archuleta to Rick Astley (both "12-year-olds that sound like 50-year-olds"); and getting totally spooked when the scarily waxen-faced Janice Dickinson materialized beside him:
-- Chris Sligh then strutting his stuff with his old season 6 buddy Sanjaya Malakar:
-- Former rockin' runners-up Constantine Maroulis and Ace Young sharing a tender moment:
-- Another rockin' runner-up, Bo Bice, having a good hair day:
-- Lakisha Jones looking utterly stunning:
-- Adorable Paris Bennett announcing that her second album, out in November, will be called Simply Jazz and will consist solely of jazz standards (which will surely beautifully suit her old-school voice):
-- Jasmine Trias confessing that she was dying to meet fellow Filipina AmIdol contestant Ramiele Malubay:
-- Kevin Covais, aka Chicken Little, revealing that he has taken up acting and is starring in a soon-to-be-released "filthy" teen comedy called College:
-- Brandon Rogers alluding to plans for an Idol revue in Branson (I'm booking my vacation package now!):
-- Me getting to interview the thickly bearded members of ZZ Top, who predicted David Cook's win and announced "history will be made":
-- Me interviewing reality-TV pioneer and former Dancing With The Stars contender Jerry Springer:
-- Me chatting with season 2 champ Ruben Studdard right before he was ushered inside:
-- Carrie Underwood getting mobbed by reporters (so I didn't get to talk to her, sadly):
-- Jordin Sparks popping up in the press room mere moments after Cook was crowned, doling out advice for her worthy successor ("Get some sleep now, because you're not going to sleep for the next year!"):

And so, hard as it may be to believe, American Idol season 7 has come to a close. Wow, it seems like just yesterday Josiah Leming was blowing it with a misguided attempt at "Stand By Me," Simon Cowell was throwing a hissyfit over Kyle Ensley’s omission from the top 24, Danny "Some People Weren’t Lik-ing It" Noriega was snapping his head defiantly, Amanda Overmyer was gargling glass through "Carry On Wayward Son," the artist formerly known as Carly Hennessy, etc.
And now it's all over.
But hey, like I mentioned earlier, at least the equally fabulous Nigel Lythgoe-brainchild show So You Think You Can Dance is starting up tomorrow. So please keep visiting this space to get updates on that...and on the other music/reality shows that we're all obsessed with!
Seacrest out.

I had rationalized it all out "Little David NEEDS the win more than DC, who will have a career regardless", and the unexpected happened... JUSTICE, VICTORY, THE RIGHT MAN WINS!!! YEEAAAHHHHH!! I screamed like a groupie when the results came out.
It was great that Simon apologised (without looking for ulterior motives). Most of the show was good entertainment. Great to see our other favs, and I was glad to see Amanda back (even tho she was a little out of her element).
DC sounded that the star that he is with ZZ Top. He is READY for the world!
And this is the one place I always stop for Idol blog - I really respect your frankness LP, and you're 95% right on the money for me, which is PLENTY. And your mom is adorable, she rocks. She must be in Cook Heaven now.
I couldn't even sit when it was time for the winner to be announced. When they said David Cook, I started screaming and jumping around and scared my poor cat!! LOL
What the heck was Jordin Sparks wearing??? It did not look good on her at all!! Also did anyone else think it looked like Amanda didn't want to be there? She never smiled when she sang and she didn't dance much with the others. I could've done without her solo too, I wanted to hit mute.
Carrie was great as always!! She is still the best AI.

TOP 5 MOMENTS FOR ME:
1. Watching Cook's mom beam.
2. Watching his brother — the one who was supposed to be trying out for Idol in the first place — tearfully mouth the words "that's my brother" into the camera.
3. Simon's apology for ''verging on disrespectful'' with the way he downplayed Cookie's terrific Tuesday-night performances.
4. Learning that fifty-six percent of the 97.5 million votes were for Cook.
5. Seeing Cook surrounded by his 11 fellow finalists.
Other stuff:
Loved the duet of The Letter Carly and Michael Johns! Loved the duet of Seal with Syesha! Nice pairing of Brooke White and Graham Nash--she was so obviously honored to sing with him and she sounded lovely. :-)
The 'comedy' bits were all painful filler last night...ugh.
The group songs were hokey but nice to see all the top 12 again--especially Kristy Lee, who sounded great opening the first song with the top 6 gals!
Glad that Jordin Sparks was really singing last night (at least it seemed she was) and preferred that song over her single, Soul Tatoo.
Ryan Seacrest is just out of control with his over acting and enough with his mundane questions: "How do you feel right now?" Please...what a dork.
Regarding Simon's apology to DC. Did anyone else see him wink at DC on Tuesday night after his final nasty comment about the "knockout"--when the Davids were back on stage? I have strong suspicion his said what he did on purpose for those voters that don't like him to vote for DC out of spite. Reverse pychology in action, LOL!
Congrats, David Cook--proud of you, thrilled for you that you won, will be waiting for a CD from you in the future!
Just a thought.... don't be too harsh on Simon, he's a master manipulator and might well have been playing to his reputation of knocking someone off through praise (the curse of the Cowell).
Maria Sue Chapman, adopted and youngest daughter to Mary Beth and Steven Curtis Chapman, was killed Wednesday night in a tragic accident in the family driveway on Wednesday evening. She was LifeFlighted to Vanderbilt Children's Hospital but for only reasons God can explain she went home to Him... not to Franklin as we all so desperately wanted.
Your prayers are needed for all in the Chapman family. This is a family who has so generously loved and given to so many. Just hours before this close knit family was celebrating the engagement of the oldest daughter Emily Chapman, and were just hours away from a graduation party marking Caleb Chapman's completion of high school. Now, they are preparing to bury a child who blew out 5 candles on a birthday cake less than 10 days ago. These words are unthinkable to type. - Jim Houser (Manager
Life's to short, Steven Curtis Chapman is one of the best known and giving Christian recording Artist out there, but even that being said anyone losing a child so young needs all our support, the real AI to him is no longer with us, please go to K-Love online and there is a blog where you can leave your condolences.
So, thanks again for a great blog. It made me recover my faith on the show ;) (although I still don't accept David the H's elimination) ;-)
I SO hope they make some serious format changes in the meantime. Some songs are SO outdated that they make them sing it's sad.
I also saw in another article online that:
Under Cowell's deal with Fox, he has the rights to sign the winning singer and runner-up from each "Idol" contest to a recording contract with his label, Sony BMG, a partnership between Sony Corp and Bertelsmann
With THIS in mimd, I wouldn't cry any tears or lose any sleep for David A. since Simon's last night comment that he didn't care who won is evident he'll likely promote both of them. Let's just hope with winning cd results. These are 2 different artists that have their fan bases that should make sales and that is what the industry wants most then.
