Seacrest Out: The Reality Rocks Idol Wrapup

Posted Wed May 21, 2008 10:53pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks
Those of you reading this entry probably know by now that American Idol history was made tonight, as the show had its first "rocker" winner in its seven-season history: David Cook. And those of you who are regular readers of this blog know I'm personally pretty psyched about this development...as is my even more pro-Cook mother, whom I took to the pre-finale showdown last night.

Well, tonight I was in professional mode, leaving the moms at home to go work the preshow red carpet and then camp out in the backstage press room during the actual main event. And judging by the huge whoops and hollers that resonated throughout the press room when David Cook's name was announced, it seems like many members of the media were pretty pro-Cook too. In fact, when David The C starting crying after his victory, some of the usually-hardened press people got verklempt as well. (I was one of them, natch.)

But before the big winner announcement and all the odd musical numbers that preceded it (Bryan Adams??? really???), I was stationed in front of the Nokia Theater with my fellow Yahoo! staffers, snagging interviews and photos. Since the show is over (and you all can watch it on TV anyway), I'll just wrap up with some bulletpoints of my personal behind-the-scenes highlights this evening:

-- The superfly So You Think You Can Dance kids showing up (season 4 of SYTYCD starts tomorrow, you know!!) and totally busting a move on the red carpet:

-- The delightful Melinda Doolittle revealing that she's finally releasing an album this summer:

-- Jon Peter Lewis confessing that he wants Kristy Lee Cook's phone number (JPL + KLC? that has a nice ring to it!) and answering "Michael Johns" when asked who he was rooting for:

-- Hilarious Chris Sligh answering "Jason Castro!" when asked who he was rooting for; griping "It drives a splinter right into my aorta!" when asked how he felt about contestants getting to play instruments this year (unlike last season, when Chris competed); comparing David Archuleta to Rick Astley (both "12-year-olds that sound like 50-year-olds"); and getting totally spooked when the scarily waxen-faced Janice Dickinson materialized beside him:

-- Chris Sligh then strutting his stuff with his old season 6 buddy Sanjaya Malakar:

-- Former rockin' runners-up Constantine Maroulis and Ace Young sharing a tender moment:

-- Another rockin' runner-up, Bo Bice, having a good hair day:

-- Lakisha Jones looking utterly stunning:

-- Adorable Paris Bennett announcing that her second album, out in November, will be called Simply Jazz and will consist solely of jazz standards (which will surely beautifully suit her old-school voice):

-- Jasmine Trias confessing that she was dying to meet fellow Filipina AmIdol contestant Ramiele Malubay:

-- Kevin Covais, aka Chicken Little, revealing that he has taken up acting and is starring in a soon-to-be-released "filthy" teen comedy called College:

-- Brandon Rogers alluding to plans for an Idol revue in Branson (I'm booking my vacation package now!):

-- Me getting to interview the thickly bearded members of ZZ Top, who predicted David Cook's win and announced "history will be made":

-- Me interviewing reality-TV pioneer and former Dancing With The Stars contender Jerry Springer:

-- Me chatting with season 2 champ Ruben Studdard right before he was ushered inside:

-- Carrie Underwood getting mobbed by reporters (so I didn't get to talk to her, sadly):

-- Jordin Sparks popping up in the press room mere moments after Cook was crowned, doling out advice for her worthy successor ("Get some sleep now, because you're not going to sleep for the next year!"):

And so, hard as it may be to believe, American Idol season 7 has come to a close. Wow, it seems like just yesterday Josiah Leming was blowing it with a misguided attempt at "Stand By Me," Simon Cowell was throwing a hissyfit over Kyle Ensley’s omission from the top 24, Danny "Some People Weren’t Lik-ing It" Noriega was snapping his head defiantly, Amanda Overmyer was gargling glass through "Carry On Wayward Son," the artist formerly known as Carly Hennessy, etc.

And now it's all over.

But hey, like I mentioned earlier, at least the equally fabulous Nigel Lythgoe-brainchild show So You Think You Can Dance is starting up tomorrow. So please keep visiting this space to get updates on that...and on the other music/reality shows that we're all obsessed with!

Seacrest out.

I have not always able to vote but my votes were for David cook and Carly Smithson, but I liked Brook & David A. also. I am 73 but I and lived through the rock music with my kids and now my grand children and I really like some of it and I would not miss this wonderful prodution. I am for the young people getting a start on their dreams. Keep up the wonderful work American Idol.

Well, there goes another season, huh? With all the cheesy boxing analogies and scores of frankly pathetic performances before the results show (who's worse, The Jonas Brothers or Hannah Montana?), you would think it's all worth it.
To say it straight out: David Archuleta deserved to be aeason's 8 American Idol. Ah, yes, I am probably the lone wolf here, the minority who will probably be shamelessly bashed by fans of Mr. David Cook, but honestly, are Americans DEAF or something?

David Cook has a good voice, and he's gotten better and less arrogant as the show progressed, but Archuleta is phenemonally talented. Archuleta is just that, pure talent. He has a strong, clear voice and an excellent voice range.
Yes, he certainly doesn't have the "whole package." He doesn't have a rocker image, he always looks like he's going to pee in his pants onstage, and of course, he has this ridiculously overbearing dad. Why do you think that is? Because he's 17 years old. He's a 17 year old kid in high school. What do you expect out of him?

Just a little comment before I stop my little rant: Why do you think Simon apologized before the results were announced? Because he probably knew that David Cook won. And no T.V. show wants their judges to disagree with the voters.

Well, on the bright side, like a few others have mentioned, this probably won't be the last we see out of David Archuleta. I'm sure there'll be someone who recognizes his talent. What do Americans know anyway? They voted for George W. Bush.

*oops sorry. I meant that David Archuleta deserved to be SEASON 7's American Idol. Sorry.

I did not believe this show was rigged, but after the new American Idol was named, I shook my head in disbelief. Lost all my desire to watch any further shows. Archuletta beat every performer, confirmed by the judges, then...........who did the phone count????????????? Did not know how to add. Cook is okay, off tune often, is a ROCKER. That is what won American Idol. Archuletta has a pure voice, excellent control, pure pitch - only thing against him - his youth. I believe he could be another Frank Sinatra. Both got recording contracts, I am happy for that - but the shows integrity was lost. Won't get me back. Simon - shame on you, I was counting on your honesty.

I am a 53 year-old-widow, and I'm not ashamed to say I've watched "AI" every season (Actually, we - my husband and I - discovered it near the end of the 1st season.) I think this season had by far the most talented and nicest contestants. But there was something about David Cook. Sounding cliche', he had me at "Hello", as someone else also said. That is when I really sat up and noticed. He is a natural performer and has such stage presence. What is it about those eyes? I wish him all the best; he seems like a compassionate and intelligent guy. I already know he's talented. He might be only 25, but he has the wisdom of one much older. When he spoke on "Larry King" about his brother, Adam, and how his illness put everything in perspective, I was in awe that he "got" what takes most people a lifetime. The finale was awesome - and I don't use that word lightly. When he called the top 12 over to share the spotlight, I got chills. I even liked the winning song more than usual - or was it that he can just make anything sound good. I hope he stays grounded and puts out an incredible album. Sorry so long, but this is the first time I've posted anywhere and can release my excitement. Am I excited or what? And that "Guitar Hero" commercial......better than Tom Cruise.

I WAS SHOKED WHEN DAIVD COOK WON BECAUSE ARCHILEDO WON THE FIRST TO ROUNDS

131. kitty -
It wasn't a boxing match despite that corny opening segment. He won based on the work of an entire season, not just the last night, which I they both did well - apples and oranges - two different styles, two talents. This was the first season that I really, really cared about who won. While David C. is a talented kid, Cook has it all.

And about those numbers they make the contestants do on results night...a suggestion for the producers. I think the kids could arrange better numbers than what they're given. They do the best for what they're given, but those song and dance numbers have got to make them cringe. However, this year, ZZ Top and Cook, Brooke and Nash, even the girls and Donna Summer were much better than usual. The skits with the Love Guru ( I think Cook might also be talented at acting.) and the Pips were hilarious.

132. kitty -
a correction -- David A. is a talented kid, but Cook has it all. I guess I should proofread.

136. Bri -
I am so happy that david cook won!!
but i know that even though david archilata
didn't win someone will pick him
up and he will succed in his singing career.

137. Kalia -
I love David Cook!!!!!!

138. Frank S -
Agreat year for Idol,Once again I picked the winner tho I thought other contestents were let go of too early and some hung in there too long such as Jason Castro, tho he has a pleasent voice ,in my opinion I thought he was more of a coffee house type singer.Congrats !!!!to David Cook

139. Yahoo! Music User -
We got to see the usual guest performences by the past idols thoughout the season, but where was Kelly????????? Was she blacklisted by Clive Davis? Congrats to David Cook for winning! You earned it

140. 'sup -
I still think David A. is a much more talented...but I guess if you like David Cook because he's a better "performer" than kudos to you. He can join all those great "performers" out there, Britney Spears, Hannah Montana.
Oh well. The best has lost. The season's over. I probably need to get a life.
(P.s. I don't think ths show was rigged. For what reason? Americans are just stupid, that's all.)
