Nashville Star: Three Finalists Revealed!

Posted Mon Jul 28, 2008 7:59pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Tonight, the final three contestants for next week's Nashville Star finale were announced, but not before all four singers had to prepare two songs apiece--for performances that would, in fact, determine who wins next week. See, the votes this week dictate next week's finale results, so each contestant had to be in it to win it, even though he/she had a 1-in-4 chance of getting cut tonight before even having a chance to sing his/her second song.

Man, that's rough. But them's the breaks in Music City.

So first up was Shawn Mayer. When she came out belting her first song, Gretchen Wilson's "Here For The Party," I was personally happy to see her back in butt-kickin' bad-girl mode, but I was also gravely concerned. I wasn't concerned that she'd be incapable of killing it on that Coyote Ugly-esque partystarter--and she did kill it--but I recalled how back in week one, she sang a Janis Joplin rawker and John Rich barked at her, "We don't need another Gretchen Wilson." Therefore it was a real risk for Shawn to do an actual Gretchen song. But then again, Shawn Mayer has never been a girl to run away from a challenge. (Remember her daring George Jones cover?) And this was another risk that paid off. Even John went easy on her, saying she'd grown enough since her earlier Janis attempt (which I personally thought was just fine) that she could make a Gretchen song her own. And the way Shawn put on a brave, smiling party-hardy face, despite the fact that she was battling wisdom-teeth pain, proved she's a real fighter who's deserved to make it this far.

Gabe Garcia was next, attempting to conjure up a similar party vibe with a cover of Alan Jackson and Jimmy Buffett's Club Med happy-hour theme, "It's 5 O'Clock Somewhere." Well, I'm sure it was party time somewhere--but not on that Nashville Star stage, unfortunately. Don't get me wrong, I love me some Gabe...but this was not his best performance. He was still a little too stiff, and he didn't hide his suffering (from a common cold) as well as Shawn repressed her own wisdom-tooth misery. The result was a not-so-caliente performance for Señor Garcia. Jeffrey Steele pointed out a few bum notes, and John, a strong Gabe supporter, seemed so worried that he pretty much begged America to vote for Gabe. Meanwhile, Jewel just reminded Gabe and the rest of America that she's from a small town in Alaska.

(We know, Jewel, we know. Give the Alaska thing a rest, already. And if you start talking about how you used to live in your car, I swear I'll change the channel!)

Coffey sang next, and his song of choice was "Sweet Home Alabama," a suitably anthemic crowd-pleaser that properly showcased his almost Tourette's-esque tendency to constantly whoop and shout adlibs to the audience. Coffey is a showman more than anything else--he's hardly the best singer on this program, but he's the most charismatic performer--and this tune suited his quirky, occasionally OTT style. John still hated it, though. He looked annoyed throughout Coffey's performance, like he wanted to punch someone (Coffey? The NBC staffers who casted Coffey?), and he pulled out his usual "I don't think you're really country" argument for the umpteenth time.

Really now, John insults Coffey more often than Jewel sings a cappella or mentions Alaska during her critiques.

Anyway, singing fourth was proud-mama powerhouse Melissa Lawson, and she actually out-Shawn-Mayered Shawn Mayer in the bad-girl department: by covering a song by one of the great girl-power icons, Pat Benatar. She gave "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" her best shot, and I personally loved it. I really enjoyed how she sang a song I wouldn't have expected from a nice mother of five, a song I'd more easily expect from a rebel like Shawn. Melissa's surprisingly tough-cookie-ish performance made me wish Nashville Star had done a "Rock Goes Country" night instead of "Pop Goes Country" a few weeks ago.

Jeffrey Steele didn't love it as much, though: He told Melissa he was a little tired of hearing her "big notes." But that made no sense to me. Some belters do oversing and over-emote, trying waaaaay too hard to be the next Celine or Mariah...but I don't think Melissa does that. It never sounds like she's trying too hard; it just seems like those big notes effortlessly emanate from her big lungs. So Jeffrey saying he's tired of hearing her big notes is like him saying, oh, I dunno...he's tired of eating delicious chocolate, or petting cute fluffy puppies, or lying on a big pile of Rascal Flatts-begotten hundred-dollar bills. Makes no sense at all.

John simply asked Melissa how badly she wanted to win, and she said something sweet but predictable about her kids, her family, blah blah blah. Yep, she's no dummy. She knows the voters at home will eat that stuff up. They'll eat it up like delicious chocolate, in fact!

So after that first round, it was elimination time. The first singer to make it through and be guaranteed a spot in the finals was...Shawn Mayer! Ooh, she wasn't a shoo-in, so I was happy to see her make the cut. Shawn has worked hard all season long for this, and she's had one of the bumpiest roads to Nashville Stardom of all the contestants. A relieved and delighted Shawn then returned to the stage, where she warbled the Garth Brooks ballad "The Dance" to show off her sensitive side--and while I'm not sure if it was enough to secure her first place in this competition, she should be proud to go home with the silver or bronze next week...and hopefully a few gold and platinum records later on, after some savvy A&R rep signs her.

Melissa made it through next, which was far less surprising. Despite a couple of inexplicable bottom-two showings earlier in the season, Melissa has for the most part been a frontrunner since week 1. (Side note: When I interviewed Third Town backstage at the NStar premiere, they recommended betting money on Melissa to win. And they're from Las Vegas, so they ought to know.) For her second tune, Melissa sang another reality star's family-friendly hit, Carrie Underwood's "Jesus Take The Wheel"--which, once again, the voters will surely eat up.

John Rich sure ate it up, with gusto, shouting at the top of his lungs that this lady had a dang good shot of being the next Nashville Star. Guess he still has a crush on her.

And then it came down to Gabe and Coffey. Gee, I wonder who'd make it? Um, no, there was no upset here, no shocker, no cliffhanger. Coffey got cut. Duh. No one was surprised, not even Coffey.

I'll miss Coffey, as I've intermittently enjoyed him over this season. I've got mad love for any soulful single dad who can singlehandedly popularize the catchphrase, "Everything's better with a little cheese on it!" But I'm glad Coffey didn't edge out Gabe, if for no other reason than John Rich would probably have punched someone if that had happened. And NBC doesn't need a personal injury lawsuit on its hands, especially right before finale night.

So Gabe sang last, doing another uptempo number, Kenny Chesney's "Living In Fast-Forward." And though his voice sounded great, as it always does, I was once again a little disappointed by his performance. He was trying very hard to loosen up, but it just came across as dorky and awkward. Like when he tried to get the audience to clap along with him, it was all just a tad too wedding-bandy. That's a move Coffey could have gotten away with, because it would have come naturally to him, but it clearly didn't come naturally to Gabe.

You know, if only some Weird Science-type Dr. Frankenstein could fuse Coffey's charisma with Gabe's vocal talent, we'd have the perfect country star: Coffey Garcia. It has a nice ring to it, no?

Well...no. Instead America will have to elect the next perfect country star, choosing between Shawn, Melissa, and Gabe. I am honestly torn about whom to vote for myself. Based on my own personal tastes, which lean more toward the rock side of things, I'd choose Shawn. Based on vocal ability, I'd choose Melissa. And based on what it might mean for the country music industry in general, I'd choose Gabe, because with his crossover appeal he could bust open doors for so many other under-represented Latino artists. Really, I'd be happy to see any of them win...

...Oh, screw that. Screw being diplomatic. Yes, they're all deserving, but I want Shawn Mayer to win. There, I said it. I know it's probably an unpopular choice, but hey, I've always loved to root for the underdog.

I don't think Shawn is going to win, though; I've got to go with Third Town and say Melissa will probably make it. And if/when she does, I'll be fine with that. She's a worthy contender, too.

But no matter what, I'll be at the live finale taping next week, so come back then to get my on-the-scene reports, and to find out who is indeed crowned the new Nashville Star.

LP - Take me with you please. LOL

How I would love to be at this finale. As much as I love Gabe and hope he wins. At least the final 3 are 3 of the 4 that should have been there IMO.

I'll be back later after I final get to watch the show on the West Coast (have to view at the time slot for WC.)

Have fun LP. Can't wait to read your blogs next week.

Hands down.......Melissa has the best voice, but I believe Gabe shoule be the runaway winner for Nashville Star. For one, he has the best marketing ability and a voice that stands out. I recall a short....stiff as a rail county singer from South Texas, by the name of George Strait......and he seems to be doing just fine. What's wrong with someone who can just flat-out sing.....why do u need someone running around the stage.....that's not COUNTRY MUSIC!!!!!!!!

3. Country Girl -
Yes I totally agree!! I love Gabe and think that not only can he sing but also is a great song writer. He is going to be the Nashville Star. I am just so happy that Coffey is gone. He had no talent!

Shawn Mayer wining this competition would be as bad as Julio wining Gone Country. And Coffey's Sweet home Alabama would have had Mr Van Zant committing suicide if he wasn't already dead. This has really been one of the worst seasons of this show I've ever seen. And don't get me started on Bill Ray's hosting ability (or lack thereof)

I'm another who is also very pleased that Coffey is out of the picture, finally. For the first time ever in a television talent competition, I truly don't care who wins now. They're all deserving and I believe each of the final three will be successful. But, if I HAD to choose(let's say I was the swing vote..lol) I would have to go with Gabe because he strikes me as the real deal, the whole package. He oozes country. Melissa and Shawn are both really talented singers who I could envision (and I'm actually hoping that this does happen) having a lot of crossover success. With Gabe, I just see Nashville and that's what this competition is about. But, they're all winners and, in the process, so are we.

ok first off.. why in the world is the finale at 10pm next week? hello, guess NBC doesn't care about ratings, and thank god for my DVR! Also, i guess none of them are singing next week, as they made a point of the fact that this was their FINAL PERFORMANCES!!!

btw..jewel grew up in alaska and slept in her car..

I am sooo glad Coffey did not make it through.. if he had, i never would have watched again...

btw.. jewel grew up in alaska and slept in her car... ;-)

Although i LOVE Melissa and think she should win, like Jewel said, is she gonna be able to work 300 days/year with 5 kids and a husband?

I'm secretly hoping that Gabe wins.. I agree with John, he will build a bridge that country music needs..I am not Latin, but agree he's needed.

(jewel used to live in her car...)

If NS does survive another season on NBC, Billy Ray has got to go! I love him, but he CANNOT read a teleprompter! Let that girl from CMT do the hosting..and they have to find ALL good singers, not just 2 or 3..I think the NS producers need to watch AI when it comes back! ha!

7. Country Girl -
You are so right Amanda!! I never understood how Coffey got in the show much less the final 4!!! and the pretty boy (underwear model) couldn't sing a note. Of course, he he wanted to head over to my place and bring out a guitar and belt out a tune in my bedroom I would have no probs. He was nice to look at!!!

8. Amanda N -
lol country girl!! maybe that's why they picked him...they figured all the girls would vote for him...

imagine if he had made it onto AI??? there would be a riot!!!

I am from a town that is near Gabe's. Whenever, we heard he was going to be out singing we would make it a point to go to his show. I am not a big friend of his but he is loyal to his fans. He would notice you and make it a point to come acknowledge you. As a fan, I got to meet his parents, family, and friends. He was always thanking his fans. He is just one of the best guys you will ever meet! We need someone like him to be a role model. He won't get mixed up in all the other negative things that stars choose to do! I have said it before and will say it again, "to know him is to love him!"

10. nicole -
my roommate and i have been watching this show since the first season and every year, first night, he picks the winner... not this year, baby... three of my top four are sitting waiting to see who gets the crown... to be honest, i picked Sahwn off the bat, that girl has a great voice if not as much confidence as she needs all the time, but i do love her... as a big girl myself, i want the big girl to win... i identify with Melissa so much... but Gabe has a piece of my heart and doesn't even know it... he looks so much like my childhood best friend that it makes me cry... as a matter of fact, July 14 was the 9 year anniversary of my friend's death and seeing Gabe on stage made me bawl like a baby... hey, Gabe, if you read this and you find overweight caucasian women attractive, give me a call!!! Please?!?!?!?!? but back to the opinion part of the show, any of the three can win now, it's a toss up and as for the one that wins, do me a favor and make a good album, b/c i'm really tired of all this voting to not get a hit out of my nashville star and for the ones that don't, i've got two words for y'all... Miranda Lambert, baby!!!!

11. Amanda N -
hey, what's wrong with Miranda Lambert? i like her...and what's wrong with voting?? i got two words for YOU.. Carrie Underwood!

12. ORAROD -
I THINK GABE GARCIA SHOULD WIN. HE NOT ONLY HAS THE VOICE AND THE TALENT, BUT HE HAS THE LOOKS OF A COUNTRY SINGER. HIS VOICE IS LIKE ANOTHER GEORGE STRAIT AND I THINK HE HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE THE WINNER. I LIKE THE OTHER TWO BUT GABE HAS THE WHOLE PACKAGE.

13. INVISIBLE REALM -
"Well,i'm kind of disappointed somewhat in Gabe's song choices even though he is the most authentic-sounding country singer on the show ! I think he would do better singing dynamic Marty Robbins songs, some Kris Kristofferson type songs,Eagle's songs,or even John Fogerty songs ! Quite frankly,I was expecting more of him even though he does not have much competition in the country & western department with the others singing rock songs, etc ! The other singers sound more like rockers than country & western though one of them might end-up as the # 1 Nashville Star, and that would be a blow to the authentic country & western music industry somewhat ! Things have got to change !"

It is always interesting to hear your opinions-Invisible Realm. You seem to march to the beat of your own drum! I realize that Gabe picks song choices that are not your fun, energetic, fast songs but that is not him. His songs define and relect true country! I kinda feel that people have lost their perspective about singers and songwriters. If a man can sing and write like Gabe he doesn't need to run around stage to entertain! He is not trying out for a dance competition; it is a singing competition. He isn't a "Backstreet Boy" he is a "Country Boy" who is singing for country music fans!!!!

15. Trixi -
This was my first season to watch Nashville Star. My pick for the winner is Shawn Mayer. I like her voice and her strength to stick up for herself. (John Rich is a little to stuck on himself for me) She's single, knows what she wants, and has the drive to get it. Plus I'm tired of the cutesy, blonde, singers that are all starting to look alike.

I love Gabe's voice. But his stage presence has much to be desired. Someone was comparing him to George Strait... I love George Straits music, but I will never go to another one of his concerts. Too boring.. he just stands there and sings and strums his guitar. I don't expect wild crazy dancing, but a little movement is nice.

I also like Melissa.. she has came a long way. I don't think she belts out too much. She just has one of those power house voices. But 5 kids and the road.. might be a little overwhelming.

I was glad to see Coffey go. His shaky voice really started to get to me. Seemed like he was always after the sympathy vote.

16. INVISIBLE REALM -
"One has to remember that on the Nashville Star stage all of the singers are singin' & performin' "live" ! So it is not unprofessional of any of them to perform concert-style songs at times like Charlie Jenkins & Coffey has done ! What is important is in the song choice, and what night they choose to perform the song that way on ! Even if the judges want them to just stand there so they can judge their singin, and not wander around where they can't see them it's still important to remember that they are performin' for "live" tv,and it is not wrong to dance if they can dance & sing well at the same time in order to help themselves sing,& perhaps gather more interest & votes that way if they can do it well ! Some people perform better when they can move around !"

17. Lady Jane -
I had written comments as I watched the show and now I have decided that they are really not even worth posting. It really comes down to the fact the Gabe is my fave and I will always find faults in the others. I enjoyed all the performances tonight with the exception of Coffey. I can see a lot of talent in Shawn, Melissa and Gabe. The truth is, Gabe is the only one I really connect with as an artist. He is the only one on the show IMO that had good vocals and sounded country in every performance he did. I think Gabe is the only one that really, truly deserves the title of Nashville Star.

The Nashville Stars in the past have had some what of a hard time getting promotion through the labels and most have not made too big of a splash in the country world. I hope that this year we will see a change in that direction. It would be nice to see several of these contestants making it as singers.

There has been much speculation this year whether the show will see another season. It has been a difficult season for many of the NS fans from past seasons. When they cast the show this year, they unfortunately did not choose the best representatives of both country music and talent in the roles they were assigned. The really funny thing is there were more talented contry performers that auditioned for the show and still would have filled the roles. The rumor now is that the show may very well go back to USA next year. While it is a shame that the show did not do very well on NBC, I think the producers are primarily responsible for that. I would really like to see Gabe win this year because he does best represent what the show was intended to find, a true country artist. It would be nice if in this season of strange country acts, the real country artist wins the title.

18. nicole -
I just wanted to point out... maybe i was misunderstood... what i meant was that, because i like all three finalists adn i alone could never choose which one should win, that sometimes the 2nd or 3rd runner-up becomes bigger than the original winner... i liked buddy jewel's 1st album, but Miranda won album of the year... this year... so it is completely feasible for the winner this year to be great, but one of the other finalists to surpass the winner's accomplishments... love Miranda Lambert... was meant as nothing but a compliment and encouragement... not sure what the Carrie Underwood reference meant, she won... on a pop show... hmmmm....

19. Yahoo! Music User -
This is in reference to Invisible Realm- I just want to say these people have to appeal to your hearing not sight. People listen to music everyday on radio. They do not go to concerts everyday. If someone sings well and I enjoy their music I do try to attend their concert when they are in my town. Sometimes I have got up to leave because they weren't entertaining but I didn't throw out their CD or quit listening to them on the radio! And yes, you were bored at George Strait's concert but do you still buy his CD's and listen to his songs on the radio? Gabe may not be an entertainer to your eyes but he sure entertains your ears.

20. INVISIBLE REALM -
"No,I think a lot of Gabe, and i think he can be a great country & western performer ! I just hoped that he would step it up bit more with more dynamic & charismatic songs other than the ones he performed recently, and that actually did not happen ! Even though Coffey doesn't sound as country as Gabe,i think he's a pretty good performer, though so is Shawn Mayer & Melissa Lawson ! It's Shawn Mayers dynamic song choices, delivery of the songs,& wardrobe that has really shown everybody how she has stepped-up her game when it has counted ! She should go far in what she does as long as she keeps it up ! In the beginning of the show this season it was plain to see that they should not have given Jewel the power to bump Charlie Jenkins off the show in favor of obviously less talented females since Jewel is a female herself ! So that just showed me what an unreliable-type of person for what's fair that she is,and how easily influenced she was to be unfair by the two other judges about Charlie Jenkins "live"concert-style performance ! If they don't want them to sing "live"that way then they should of just had them make recordings in a studio to judge & vote on rather than have them perform "live" on national tv,etc ! If you know what i mean !"
