Fresh "Air": Rissi Palmer Breathes Life Into A Jordin Sparks Song

Posted Tue Jul 29, 2008 1:31pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

"No Air" was the one breath of fresh air on Jordin Sparks's debut album for me. Although I've never doubted that the season 6 AmIdol winner has a good set of pipes, I have for the most part been disappointed with the safe, snoozy post-show material's she's released.

The one exception has been "No Air," which I actually think is one of the best pop singles of 2008. I also think it's probably what saved Jordin from a sad, one-album-then-dropped, Taylor Hicks-like fate. Of course, it didn't hurt matters that her unstoppable and unfloppable labelmate Chris Brown appeared on the song, but even without his input, a good song is a good song is a good song.

Case in point: The new "No Air" cover by rising Nashville star Rissi Palmer. It's a country version, and Chris Brown is nowhere to be found on it, and it's still just as great.

Or is it? Some people might even say Rissi's version is better. Compare and contrast the remake and the original here, and you decide:

I love the orginal, its way better and Jordin's voice is awesome.

Get real people, Jordin version is better. Because anyone with a mind can see that; Rissi video don't even go with the song, what is doing losing her air over the horse. See Jordin video you can specifically see that Jordin is losing her air over CB. Now don't get me wrong Rissi is a very talented singer but Jordin is better and her video proves it.

I think both songs are good. I have never heard Rissi Palmer's version before and think its great. I don't think one is better then the other because they may be the same lyrics but have two different appeals. Chris and Jordin's version is great because I like the contrast between the two voices and having two people sing it gives it a totally different meaning. But being a country fan also and Rissi's version is great because it is a woman singing it to her partner(or ex) and gives it another meaning. BASICALLY I think both are great because of the great lyrics and "catchiness" of the melody.

Oh please! Charlie_classof03 How is Jordin losing her air over someone if he's right there in the video with her?

If you prefer pop/r&b and what's on the radio you will probably prefer Jordin's (or if you are just a die hard American Idol fan). If you prefer country or just the more traditional nongeneric musical style you will probably prefer Rissi's. Both singers have great voices and just appeal to different audiences.

Go Rissi! Go Jordin! I personally prefer Rissi's version.

Really difficult to compare. I will have to say, I love Rissi's " VIDEO" and her voice is actually quite good, which is no doubt, and that is for sure what is needed in the music industry. But I also have to say, Jordin is definitely no worse than Rissi. Actually, after listening to both songs, I think many people mentioned about the maturity that Rissi gives to the song, however, I kinda feel that from the beginning to the end, Rissi's style is pretty flat, it is pretty much the same low tone through out the whole song. And when it comes to Jordin's, she is only 19 or 20, maybe it is true that her voice is not as mature as Rissi's yet, but after all, she is the winner of AmIdol 6, I believe that most of the people in the States would not have chosen someone whose voice is " immature ". And in Jordin's version, she is more dynamic, and her style is actually more "interesting", she is always changing her pitch and trying to challenge it higher and higher again in her song, not the same low tone all the way down to the end, So I think Rissi has a maturer voice than Jordin does, but Jordin has put more skills in her songs. And they are both talented. Jordin needs to be careful, coz Rissi is really on her back, but meanwhile I also believe that Jordin will overcome all the challenges.

I think the Jordin Sparks & Chris Brown version is better because it makes the song more realistic. The video shows the tow being apart and then coming together, showing that they have no air without each other. But don't get me wrong, the Rissi verison is better good since it was a opo song turned country.

Rissi's version was good, but it didn't have enough emotion. The emotion is what makes the duet w/ Jordin & Chris so great. All three are great singers, but this song was too much for Rissi to tackle alone. I've heard more emotion in someone's voice when they drop a sandwich on the ground.

I like Rissi's version better. Both are good, but Rissi's stands out more.

I definately like this song as a solo better.
In the duet it's like they are trying to out-sing each other the whole time, and it just got annoying. Then they got really loud, making the quiet ending seem anti-climatic, with more trying to out-sing each other.
If she would've done it one her own it might have been better.

i really like Rissi's version but i'm kind of leaning toward Jordin and Chris's original duet because i think with they lyrics of the song and they way its but together, it sounds better with two people. like each person is singing their side of the story. and with the original one, it think it has a different feel to it. like its louder and more real. i do like both songs though!

ok jordin sparks' version is SSOOO much better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i didnt hear rissi hit any good notes and the whole song seemed flat. as others have said i think the duet really is like 100 percent better. the song just didnt have that same feel to me because none of the high notes in the orginal song were hit by rissi. and i know that that is how the song was supposed to be but i still missed those notes alot.

Jordin's is way better! She has the pipes to hit notes Rissi wishes could. Everyones saying Rissi to hate on Jordin. Rissi sounds like any other country singer Leann Rimes would've done better.Originals are usually better n e ways.

Rissi IS cool...BUT JORDIN IS HOT!

154. Tara -

I've seen this song listed on the Country charts and sought it out . I like this version better than Jordin and Chris. Hope it starts moving further up the charts.

i couldn't even listen to the rest of this Rissi person. eeeeeeeeehhhh. it hurt to listen to it. jordin sparks version is WAY better. i love the duet part, which enriches the song so much better. how can a strumming guitar replace chris?

love the ocean on that video though. THAT was beautiful. The song... not so much.

I think the song is great and both versions bring something to the table. But I will say that I'm going to go out and get Rissi's album.
