America's Second-Best Dance Crew

Posted Fri Aug 15, 2008 3:14pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

Last night, So Real Cru and SuperCr3w battled for the title of America's Best Dance Crew. Or, more accurately, America's Second-Best Dance Crew. Because let's face it, the real best dance crew, Fanny Pak, was sent home last week.

Yes, readers, it's seven days later and I'm still bitter. If the always outrageously entertaining Fanny Pak had been eliminated last week solely based on viewers' votes, maybe I could let it go, just chalk it up to the public's lowest-common-denominator stupidity, or maybe even homophobia. You know, "two million people CAN be wrong" and all that jazz. But since it was the judges--the supposed experts--who ultimately chose to eliminate Fanny Pak before the finale, I remain steadfastly furious.

I was still seething while I watched America's Best Dance Crew 2 last night, just imagining how much more exponentially awesome the final danceoff would have been if it had come down to SoReal Cru and Fanny Pak instead of SoReal Cru and Super Cr3w. I found last night's show surprisingly underwhelming overall, and I just know if Fanny Pak had gotten a shot at the "Dance Craze Challenge"--the part of the show when the crews invented original Chicken Noodle Soup/Superman/Lean Back-style dance steps--they would have come up with something totally rad. Something involving a lot of zipper-pulling fannypack action. And sales of fannypacks would have been instantly boosted nationwide! Instead, I got Super Cr3w's wack "S To The Chest" moveĀ and SoReal Cru's vague air-punching on "Smash It Up." Even when SoReal Cru attempted to redeem themselves last night with the use of a few creatively placed props (Hannibal Lechter muzzle-masks and straitjackets, giant plastic fists), all I kept thinking was, "Fanny Pak would have done that sooooo much better."

Anyway, after Fanny Pak's shocking downfall last week, I only half-jokingly threatened to boycott the remainder of the ABDC2 season. But I can't ignore the show entirely. So as a peaceful protest that would make Gandhi himself proud, I will instead run a choronological collection of Fanny Pak's greatest hits. Whatever happens on MTV next week, these guys are the real winners in my heart:

I can't believe Fanny Pak was voted off last week. Finally an original dance crue and what happens??? We get the same old "has been" Choreography that wins. What happened?? Doesn't the world appreciate "NEW" and "DIFFERENT"??

Thanksfor letting me vent..haha

I liked Fanny Pak and they were as creative as they come! But The Judges seem to let go lots of perfectly good crews and that would have whupped tail on most of those challenges and were let go before their time. Example: A.S.I.I.D., my personal favorite!

FANNY PAK is my favorite and will always be my favorite! I was SHOCKED when I found out that they had to battle it out with Super Crew last week, that should have been so real crew and super crew, cause fanny pak killed it on the missy challenge (check the tape: standing ovation)! I KNOW we will see fanny pak in the near future somewhere living there dream! they are incredible talented and fun to watch. i also love that they are TRAINED DANCERS (ballet, modern, etc..) you can tell. i love the dynamics of the group! we all know who THE REAL WINNERS ARE, DON'T WE!

-LOVE:)

I can't believe the judges let them go...they must have been blind-folded during their performance. They are the real winners...the other two crews are sooo lame.

I totally agree with you. Thank you so much for your blog on this. I was throughly disappointed with the incompetence of the judges with eliminating Fanny Pak (America's REAL Dance Crew). I cannot even fathom what was going through the minds of the judges. I am not surprised by Lil' Mama and JC, but I expected more from Shane. I'm even surprised by the accolades they gave SoReal Cru and Super Cr3w on the last episode, which was BORING! "S to the chest"? "Smash it up"? What in the world? Is there a way we can write to MTV to talk to the judges in making more educated and professional decisions? Great job anyways on this Lyndsey.

Yo! I totally agree with you .Not only where they different. They were better than there comp.I stopped watching because there not on the show anymore. I found myself waiting to watch them on thr. nights. I even have the show on my myspace page. That goes to show you how main stream politics always comes thru.Im suprised because FANNY PAC is not harcore.Maybe the gay guys in the group were the turn off. Oh!I forgot! Most dancers are gay?!Americas best dance crew has lost points with the decision to eliminate FANNY PAC. ONE!

I thought fanny pack should have went home along time ago, but when I saw the performance the week before they were voted off I thought they were the best crew for that week. It would have saved them from elimination if they would have did routine on the show that they went home, it was that good, and it was their best performance. I thought that them being voted off was right they did not look good with the moves and being nsync.

i couldn't agree more!!! Fanny Pak was AWESOME! Thursday's show was soooooo boring, good thing the Olympics were on...its sad but America still doesn't know how to react to ppl and things that aren't the stereotype...Fanny Pak made their own mold and will forever be remembered by all ABDC fans and I'm sure the rest of the world as they continue to put themselves out there for all to see.

And as a side note, I think SoReal Cru has always been ontop this season because ppl keep comparing them to Kabba Modern who of course was last year's Fanny Pak in the sense that they should have made the final show...and I think SoReal Cru is reaping the benefits.

So bummed about Fanny Pak's too-early dismissal. Fantastic dancers, and creative to boot. (I think their "Flashdance" routine is the most creative, and best-danced, one I've seen on this show.)

Would've loved a Fanny Pak/Super Cr3w final. Sigh.

I agree! Fanny Pack was the bomb. The judjes and the people that voted them off obviously have no eyes. they were amazing!

12. cilly XD -
fanny pak is so creative. i agree they sould've stayed

I agree with you totally. I'm so over this lame show. I guess I'm just going to have to keep tuning into So You Think You Can Dance to watch the real dancers. (Plus the judges on SYTYCD aren't obsessed with tired moves, not to mention they aren't homophobic). Whatever Shane Sparks, I'm glad you left.

That's right. I completely agree with you as well. Thank you for this! I couldn't have said it better myself. So thank you!
MTV is so scripted. Definitely SoReal VS FannyPak! I love FANNY PAK!!! Enough said.

SUPER CR3W WON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE SUPER CR3W!!!! BUT I THOUGHT THAT FANNY PAK WAS WAY WAY WAY WAY WAY BETTER THAN SOREAL CRU.

AP
Mon Dec 7, 2009 12:06am PST

AP - As far as one-hit wonders go, Daniel Powter (POW'-ter) is king of them all — for this decade, at least. Powter, whose hit "Bad Day" reigned on top of the Billboard pop charts for five weeks in 2006, was name… More »
