Kaitlyn Maher: The Kid's Not All Right

Posted Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:56pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, I just want to state for the record, before I proceed with this post, that I am not some toddler-hating monster. Readers, please do not report me to Child Protective Services after reading this. I write this blog out of CONCERN, not scorn, for Kaitlyn Maher.

For those of you not watching America's Got Talent this season, contestant Kaitlyn Maher is an adorable, plucky 4-year-old girl. She sings pretty well for a 4-year-old. But the key part of that phrase is FOR A 4-YEAR-OLD. Her very young and raw talent just is not up to par with that of the older, more seasoned finalists (including some older children in familial bands like the Wright Kids and the Taubl Family). She has absolutely no business being on this show, a show that will award a $1 million contract for a full-time Las Vegas revue to its winner--presumably an adult winner capable of handling that much income, a grueling weekly performance schedule, and fast-lane life in Sin City. This little tot isn't even old enough to go to the bathroom by herself. How in the world is she supposed to put on a 90-minute Vegas show night after night if she actually wins this thing?

Furthermore, would anyone REALLY want to see Kaitlyn perform for 90 minutes, unless they were blood-related to her? Yeah, sure, Kaitlyn is cute. Like, fuzzy-baby-chick cute. So cute it's almost painful to look at her too long, with her missing teeth and askew hair bows and princess party dresses and Shirley Temple-esque chubby-cheeks. Probably the only reason she's made it this far, all the way to the top 20, is because she is cute. But can cuteness ultimately sustain a full-length Vegas show? I think not. Her schtick would get old (no pun intended) after about seven minutes.

And on that note, what will happen when she's not cute anymore? Every kid, no matter adorable she is at age 4, goes through a dreaded awkward stage. So if Kaitlyn wins America's Got Talent now, will she eventually lose her Vegas contract when she inevitably suffers from hormonal teenage acne that not even the strongest dose of ProActiv can cure?

Simply put, Kaitlyn Maher does not belong on America's Got Talent. Not YET, anyway. She should have never been selected for the top 40, and the viewing public should not have voted her through to the top 20 this week. And if she wins this competition, it will ruin not only this entire show but, much more importantly, her entire life. Because whether or not Kaitlyn has coasted through on cuteness or on actual talent so far, the main point is: It's cruel to keep her in this competition at this point.

See, while Kaitlyn seemed to enjoy performing on America's Got Talent at first--as she was oohed and ahhed and fussed over by the smitten judges and equally adoring live audience--now that the show has moved on to the stiff-competition round, she no longer seems to be having very much fun. Last night as she stood onstage next to scary, facially pierced firebreather Flambeaux awaiting her fate, she looked positively deer-in-headlights terrified, on the verge of tears, and utterly confused. It actually hurt me to watch her suffer:

Looking at Kaitlyn's frozen face of fear, it was hard for me to believe that the bright idea to audition for this show sprang from her 4-year-old brain. This girl is clearly not ready for prime time. She should have waited to audition for America's Got Talent season 16. Or, more, specifically, her parents should have waited before they dragged her to the auditions.

Anyway, things will only get tougher for Kaitlyn if she advances to the top 10. Or, especially, if she wins. She'll end up like Michael Jackson--who started singing as a toddler, was consequently robbed of his entire childhood, and now 45 or so years later is a baby-dangling wackjob shut-in with a chemically burned face and chimpanzees for friends. Or maybe Kaitlyn will become the next Britney Spears, shaving off her cute curly locks and forgetting to wear panties under her party dresses 20 years from now. Really, the best poor little Kaitlyn can hope for is to end up on VH1's "Celebreality" programming grid 30 years from now, with her own Breaking Bonaduce-style reality show chronicling her deeply ingrained emotional problems after growing up on television and in Vegas under the guidance of pushy stage parents.

For all these reasons, I say put Kaitlyn AND America's Got Talent viewers out of their misery. Let Kaitlyn go home and sing for FUN--to Kidz Bop albums or to Barney episodes or in school plays or whatever--for at least a few more years. Let whatever talent she has (and it's difficult to discern how much talent she really does have, at her tender age) develop for another decade or so. And then let KAITLYN decide if a career in music, on television, or in Las Vegas is something she wants to pursue. She may not be as cute and girly by then, but she'll be more ready for her close-up all the same.

You're completely right, enough is enough, there are real performers at work here. Very cute, come back in 15 years if you turn out to like singing, and just because it makes mommy and daddy smile.

i just wanna say that she is realy cute first i saw her sing suddenly my tears drop...i like her lots

I think Kaitlyn does have a special talent, for a four year old......Sing's mostly in tune, but, is she old enough to understand........not being the winner? Is she special enough to just go on, knowing it's what she has to do, losing at 4, 5, 6 , and who know's for how how long........if so, then Bravo to the parents..for an extremly well adjust "Baby". otherwise BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I wish them well but can't help but worry for little Kaitlyn.

Okay, we have dancing Dad's... They better think of a way to put some T&A or boring! Singer's, which are another lounge act in Vegas - not very original, when you have acts in Vegas like Bette Midler and Celine Dion... Can't compete - we're talking Vegas here.. And that goes for all the singers... Impersonator's - and flaming baton twirlers, tons in Vegas and don't need another one and when Kaitlyn wins, she doesn't have to take the Vegas act... we're American's we change the rules! I would go to Vegas to see her sing.... when she wins, she won't do Vegas... too young! But win she will..... A talent is someone who touches hearts.... and that she does, that she does!

5. Desiree -
I agree 100%. She is so sweet, but too young.

She is a cute and innocent little girl.If her parents try to teach her at an early age she will not always win in life then they managed that. But other tahn that she has no business being on a scene with people that spent years of their lives working on an act. Amerians always voted for the underdog but it's time to let real talent win. It would be fair.

I think it's horrible to put a four year old out in the public eye like that. She is supposed to be at home playing dolls and being a kid. I say shame on her parents......

8. Jay33son -
im 100% voting for her as much as possible from now on just to hope for the train wreck you so badly want to avoid.

I mean, really....shouldnt we all be working together to destroy crappy shows like this?

9. Shauna -
I agree with Gia369.

10. kimmie -
I totally agree...they need to have an age limit...it's not fair to the other contestants who may be more talented, but can't compete with cute

11. Sharon -
I wouldn't say she had no business making it to the top 20 (I'd much rather see her over Flambeau!), but I'd hate to see someone like Eli or Jonathan the baton twirler miss a spot in the top 10 over Kaitlyn. I love her to death, but I think she's better suited for a Disney movie than a Vegas act. CALL HER NOW DISNEY!!

I agree with this Blog 100%. The poor kid looked terrified when she was singing, and even more terrified when the judges came down on her. She had the "Oh no, now mom and dad are going to push me (or punish me) even harder because I just wasn't good enough look on her face. I have 4 kids and I tell them they're great no matter how they do in whatever THEY choose to de, but that's what a parent does, SUPPORT NOT PUSH. And I totally agree that none of this was her idea. My four ear old says stuff like "I wanna do that" when she sees American Idol, but I ain't rushing to sign her up because I know darn well that as soon as she got in front of a group she'd turn into a little turtle and poke her head in to hide like most NORMAL children. Not that some aren't little "Showstoppers", I got one of them too, but there is no way that at thier ages they could handle the pressure of working as a performance artist, especially in Vegas, and not be able to just be a kid anymore. In this case, who's really trying to win? Daughter? Or Parents?

13. Elizabeth -
i like kaitlyn a lot. i think she's adorable, but she is just not old enough to understand everything that is going on. did you see her face last night after piers morgan's criticism. it was like someone kicked her. BOOO to the parents. whether it was her idea or not.

14. DiscoStew -
She is so cute it gags me. I hate to think of the awful stage mothers putting her through this. The violin players should win, because that is actually something people would go to see in Vegas.

15. Jackie, Shorty, Short Little Fillipino Jackie.... -
She is absolutely adorable and i can see her headlining a show....at Disneyland. NOT in Sin City.

And if she doesn't win the show, how will she handle it? The audience will most likely start booing and really, she's only four, she will have no idea what is going on and will most probably start crying up a storm.

Her parents are the biggest problem here. They probably see her as a meal ticket. It's disgusting.

She is still cute, and has talent, but someone this young does not belong on a show like this.

16. T P -
Okay, she's cute, I get that. But come on! A four year old doing an act in Las Vegas? The whole thing is a little creepy to me!

17. Jeez! -
I totally agree with this. She is way too young to be able to accept a prize of this magnitude. I think there should be a cutoff age for this competition. I'm not sure how it would work for family groups, but for indidviduals it should be 16 and up. I choose 16 because most kids have gone through puberty and their voices probably won't be changing anymore.

18. Rich -
Yes she touches hearts, but she is not ready. I firmly believe that she should have not even been entered. I think she is adorable, but putting a 4-year old into the arena where adults crumble at loss is not fair. It will cost her parents years of therapy, and may forever damage her love of music. Where they did let her compete, and she won our hearts, they should find soe kind of concilation prize and let her bow out.

19. SteveF -
I like this show, but I feel the judges were cowards for not doing the right thing and eliminating her before getting to this point. She's good for 4. Maybe great, but I can't watch it. I think the show should implement an under-age limit, especially now with a Vegas contract on the line. If they still have baby-teeth, they shouldn't be allowed. I'm an uncle 14 times over and this is just too much for any child of that age to handle.

20. SARAH B -
it shouldn't matter if she isn't old enough to understand why she didn't win, thats what the biz is about right not getting your way all the time. Her parents are idiots for putting her on there. I wouldn't sit and listen to her for 90 mins. I think that if she wins it will be a big mistake and a backlash for that show. There are way more talented people then the four yr old that sings sorta good. I have two kids and I am not trying to be mean just realistic. I wouldn't do it to my own. They need to seriously look at the talent and see that no she is not million dollar material, at least not a 4. Maybe try out for Sesame Street or something.

Rihanna: Chris Brown 'had no soul in his eyes'

AP - Rihanna on Friday described the horror she felt as her ex-boyfriend Chris Brown was biting and punching her during a violent argument in February, saying she saw "no soul in his eyes." "There was no… More »
