Kaitlyn Maher: The Kid's Not All Right

Posted Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:56pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, I just want to state for the record, before I proceed with this post, that I am not some toddler-hating monster. Readers, please do not report me to Child Protective Services after reading this. I write this blog out of CONCERN, not scorn, for Kaitlyn Maher.

For those of you not watching America's Got Talent this season, contestant Kaitlyn Maher is an adorable, plucky 4-year-old girl. She sings pretty well for a 4-year-old. But the key part of that phrase is FOR A 4-YEAR-OLD. Her very young and raw talent just is not up to par with that of the older, more seasoned finalists (including some older children in familial bands like the Wright Kids and the Taubl Family). She has absolutely no business being on this show, a show that will award a $1 million contract for a full-time Las Vegas revue to its winner--presumably an adult winner capable of handling that much income, a grueling weekly performance schedule, and fast-lane life in Sin City. This little tot isn't even old enough to go to the bathroom by herself. How in the world is she supposed to put on a 90-minute Vegas show night after night if she actually wins this thing?

Furthermore, would anyone REALLY want to see Kaitlyn perform for 90 minutes, unless they were blood-related to her? Yeah, sure, Kaitlyn is cute. Like, fuzzy-baby-chick cute. So cute it's almost painful to look at her too long, with her missing teeth and askew hair bows and princess party dresses and Shirley Temple-esque chubby-cheeks. Probably the only reason she's made it this far, all the way to the top 20, is because she is cute. But can cuteness ultimately sustain a full-length Vegas show? I think not. Her schtick would get old (no pun intended) after about seven minutes.

And on that note, what will happen when she's not cute anymore? Every kid, no matter adorable she is at age 4, goes through a dreaded awkward stage. So if Kaitlyn wins America's Got Talent now, will she eventually lose her Vegas contract when she inevitably suffers from hormonal teenage acne that not even the strongest dose of ProActiv can cure?

Simply put, Kaitlyn Maher does not belong on America's Got Talent. Not YET, anyway. She should have never been selected for the top 40, and the viewing public should not have voted her through to the top 20 this week. And if she wins this competition, it will ruin not only this entire show but, much more importantly, her entire life. Because whether or not Kaitlyn has coasted through on cuteness or on actual talent so far, the main point is: It's cruel to keep her in this competition at this point.

See, while Kaitlyn seemed to enjoy performing on America's Got Talent at first--as she was oohed and ahhed and fussed over by the smitten judges and equally adoring live audience--now that the show has moved on to the stiff-competition round, she no longer seems to be having very much fun. Last night as she stood onstage next to scary, facially pierced firebreather Flambeaux awaiting her fate, she looked positively deer-in-headlights terrified, on the verge of tears, and utterly confused. It actually hurt me to watch her suffer:

Looking at Kaitlyn's frozen face of fear, it was hard for me to believe that the bright idea to audition for this show sprang from her 4-year-old brain. This girl is clearly not ready for prime time. She should have waited to audition for America's Got Talent season 16. Or, more, specifically, her parents should have waited before they dragged her to the auditions.

Anyway, things will only get tougher for Kaitlyn if she advances to the top 10. Or, especially, if she wins. She'll end up like Michael Jackson--who started singing as a toddler, was consequently robbed of his entire childhood, and now 45 or so years later is a baby-dangling wackjob shut-in with a chemically burned face and chimpanzees for friends. Or maybe Kaitlyn will become the next Britney Spears, shaving off her cute curly locks and forgetting to wear panties under her party dresses 20 years from now. Really, the best poor little Kaitlyn can hope for is to end up on VH1's "Celebreality" programming grid 30 years from now, with her own Breaking Bonaduce-style reality show chronicling her deeply ingrained emotional problems after growing up on television and in Vegas under the guidance of pushy stage parents.

For all these reasons, I say put Kaitlyn AND America's Got Talent viewers out of their misery. Let Kaitlyn go home and sing for FUN--to Kidz Bop albums or to Barney episodes or in school plays or whatever--for at least a few more years. Let whatever talent she has (and it's difficult to discern how much talent she really does have, at her tender age) develop for another decade or so. And then let KAITLYN decide if a career in music, on television, or in Las Vegas is something she wants to pursue. She may not be as cute and girly by then, but she'll be more ready for her close-up all the same.

I think she is the most adorable little girl. However, this is NOT the show for her. This is for someone to win $1 million and perform in Vegas. I do hope that this gives her exposure to go on to other things. I can see her in commercials and TV shows, but this isn't the thing for her. True, many Vegas acts are singers and it would be nice to see something different, but not a 4 year old girl.

Have her audition for a Disney show. Apparently, she'd be well on her way to being the most talented kid on that entire channel.

Adorable little girl - let her be just that - a little girl. What are her parents thinking? Taking her childhood to make money is not in the child's best interest. Let her be an adorable little girl. Let her go home and play with her friends, have fun, and be a child.

where is there a place in Vegas for a 4 year old headliner? There should have been an age limit since the prize is Vegas.

24. madgiepie -
exactly how i feel. she is just too, too precioius and her parents have done an admirable job raising such an articulate, amazing little girl.....but....i don't think it is right to put a little one under such pressure like this and for that i am upset with her parents for this. I love watching her and she makes me smile, but it makes me cringe for the time when she will be voted out (and rightly so, this is for a Las Vegas headline after all and not a kid place) and how hurt she might be. Her parents should be on stage to receive that rejection, not her.

What does age have anything to do with a talent contest? Do we rant and rave about age when kids are acting in commercials, on tv shows, or are exploited in movies? This is a talent contest, and she has just as good as a chance to win as the guy who was juggling batons. Talent goes without saying and to be honest, I'd rather listen to her, than listen to the Partridge Family 2008, and you all know who that was on the show. Sure she has some people in the contest who poses a more threat to win. But as I said before she has just as good as a chance as anyone. 4 years old involved in talent contest is nothing new, she just happen to be on a bigger stage with more people watching. I usually don't even bother about voting for people on talent shows figuring the other people watching will make up the slack. but last night I voted and I used all 10 of my opportunities to vote. Kaitlyn got all my votes. And I hope she proves the naysayers wrong. Too young huh? We'll see.

But you see, she's young, and that can be good too. She's not as nervous as she could be, because she doesn't really understand how high the stakes are and such.

OMG this is what your reduced to a blog about a 4 old little girl. I agree with david She Should run for presdent. And the thanks you are all to cute. She rocks!!!!!!!!! She may not win but, she showing a lot of little boys and girls what they can do. Some of the acts dont even listen to the judges Kaitlyn listens. I think she will be top 10. I have voted enough times. Shes what the show is all about. If Kaitlyn and Eli make top 2 i will jump for joy. Great job Rents you rock...

I agree with the you. I think 4 is way to young to compete. Now people will vote for her because she is cute and to "save" her from rejection.. she may win something she is not ready for- whereas a 16,17, 25, 32, 40 year old who may be more stable may lose out on a dream that they have had since they were 4.

29. Yahoo! Music User -
Absolutely agree.

30. Yahoo! Music User -
What an idiot comment to compare her to the likes of people like Michael Jackson, and Spears, just goes to show people like lyndsey Parker has no real basis or argument for her comments. how bout she'll end up like you writing baseless columns on yahoo music with a big nose, ugly hairdo, and played out yesterday jacket. !

I hope she wins this or gets very close to winning this competition. Reality Rock that!!!!!!!

I live here in Las Vegas "Sin City" and this is no place for 4 year old to have a show. Vegas has changed over the last couple of years. It is going back to an adult playground. This is not a place to have a sweet, adorable little girl perform a show. i believe no one would go see the show. America needs to come together and do what is best for her. Send her home. I know in my heart this little girl will get work on TV.

I agree with everything the writer of this article wrote.

Katchick

coem on guys we all know that she won't get the big prize. but for now lets let her enjoy this. this is somthing she will probably remembr fo rthe rest of ehr life and who knows a kids show may pick her up after this.

34. bobbye -
It was so painful to watch her responding to the judges I had to cut it off. Even when one of them said negative things she responded with, "Thank you." I wanted to hunt down her parents and lock them in a car in the middle of a parking lot in Phoenix in August!

35. G Q -
I think she would be a great act for kids to watch. And adults for that matter. I would bet that all the old folks who go to Vegas would pay top dollar to see her because she reminds them of their grandchildren. If I was coming off a two day Vegas bender and rolled into her show on the Strip I would probably start crying she is THAT CUTE. So I say let her perform. If she wins than that's great, but lets not have a bunch of copy cats because then the novelty will wear off. I say after this season they need to make an age restriction. Something like 10 or 12.

36. Rachel -
I agree with you 100%. Yes, Kaitlyn is cute, and is quite talented for a child that age, especially considering the amount of material that she has to memorize. The real reason she is on tv, is because her parents want the money. Her parents are pimping their baby out for money. Yeah, every kid wants to be on tv, I think, but they want to sing with Grover and Big Bird on Sesame Street, dance with Barney...not sing in a casino where the patrons are 21+.

37. Lisa -
I think that she was adorable and how could an adult say that to a 4 year old is beyond me! Nice way to encourage her, and also why her parents would do that to her...shame on you.

38. true2mynature -
I wouldn't worry about the teenage time with a young perfomer, most childhood stars wear out their welcome before that time though. She is adorable now but I feel as a parent that is exploiting the child some to the world of entertainment when they really can't understand at that age what that all involves.

To be on a show where they can "gong" you is not right I feel for a child that young an age. How can that child choose to at that age?

39. Yahoo! Music User -
totally agree -we've watched AGT since the beginning & there are plenty of other 'cute kid acts' that haven't gotten this far. It is unfair to other acts that she got this far, the judges constantly say to other acts 'you can't sustain a 90 minute show' - there's no way a 4yo could sing for 90 min.

40. Lisa -
You all are just hateful and mean with all your negative comments! She is an adorable little girl, she has every right to be there performing. Most 4 year olds would be too scared to even attempt anything like that and especially in front a large crowd. Give credit where credit is due. You Go Sweetheart I'm behind you all the way!! Kudos to ya!!

McCartney pens song for DeNiro film about widower

AP

AP - There are only so many songwriting suggestions an outsider is allowed to offer Paul McCartney. Kirk Jones, director of the new Robert DeNiro movie, "Everybody's Fine," found the limit. McCartney, who has… More »
