Kaitlyn Maher: The Kid's Not All Right

Posted Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:56pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, I just want to state for the record, before I proceed with this post, that I am not some toddler-hating monster. Readers, please do not report me to Child Protective Services after reading this. I write this blog out of CONCERN, not scorn, for Kaitlyn Maher.

For those of you not watching America's Got Talent this season, contestant Kaitlyn Maher is an adorable, plucky 4-year-old girl. She sings pretty well for a 4-year-old. But the key part of that phrase is FOR A 4-YEAR-OLD. Her very young and raw talent just is not up to par with that of the older, more seasoned finalists (including some older children in familial bands like the Wright Kids and the Taubl Family). She has absolutely no business being on this show, a show that will award a $1 million contract for a full-time Las Vegas revue to its winner--presumably an adult winner capable of handling that much income, a grueling weekly performance schedule, and fast-lane life in Sin City. This little tot isn't even old enough to go to the bathroom by herself. How in the world is she supposed to put on a 90-minute Vegas show night after night if she actually wins this thing?

Furthermore, would anyone REALLY want to see Kaitlyn perform for 90 minutes, unless they were blood-related to her? Yeah, sure, Kaitlyn is cute. Like, fuzzy-baby-chick cute. So cute it's almost painful to look at her too long, with her missing teeth and askew hair bows and princess party dresses and Shirley Temple-esque chubby-cheeks. Probably the only reason she's made it this far, all the way to the top 20, is because she is cute. But can cuteness ultimately sustain a full-length Vegas show? I think not. Her schtick would get old (no pun intended) after about seven minutes.

And on that note, what will happen when she's not cute anymore? Every kid, no matter adorable she is at age 4, goes through a dreaded awkward stage. So if Kaitlyn wins America's Got Talent now, will she eventually lose her Vegas contract when she inevitably suffers from hormonal teenage acne that not even the strongest dose of ProActiv can cure?

Simply put, Kaitlyn Maher does not belong on America's Got Talent. Not YET, anyway. She should have never been selected for the top 40, and the viewing public should not have voted her through to the top 20 this week. And if she wins this competition, it will ruin not only this entire show but, much more importantly, her entire life. Because whether or not Kaitlyn has coasted through on cuteness or on actual talent so far, the main point is: It's cruel to keep her in this competition at this point.

See, while Kaitlyn seemed to enjoy performing on America's Got Talent at first--as she was oohed and ahhed and fussed over by the smitten judges and equally adoring live audience--now that the show has moved on to the stiff-competition round, she no longer seems to be having very much fun. Last night as she stood onstage next to scary, facially pierced firebreather Flambeaux awaiting her fate, she looked positively deer-in-headlights terrified, on the verge of tears, and utterly confused. It actually hurt me to watch her suffer:

Looking at Kaitlyn's frozen face of fear, it was hard for me to believe that the bright idea to audition for this show sprang from her 4-year-old brain. This girl is clearly not ready for prime time. She should have waited to audition for America's Got Talent season 16. Or, more, specifically, her parents should have waited before they dragged her to the auditions.

Anyway, things will only get tougher for Kaitlyn if she advances to the top 10. Or, especially, if she wins. She'll end up like Michael Jackson--who started singing as a toddler, was consequently robbed of his entire childhood, and now 45 or so years later is a baby-dangling wackjob shut-in with a chemically burned face and chimpanzees for friends. Or maybe Kaitlyn will become the next Britney Spears, shaving off her cute curly locks and forgetting to wear panties under her party dresses 20 years from now. Really, the best poor little Kaitlyn can hope for is to end up on VH1's "Celebreality" programming grid 30 years from now, with her own Breaking Bonaduce-style reality show chronicling her deeply ingrained emotional problems after growing up on television and in Vegas under the guidance of pushy stage parents.

For all these reasons, I say put Kaitlyn AND America's Got Talent viewers out of their misery. Let Kaitlyn go home and sing for FUN--to Kidz Bop albums or to Barney episodes or in school plays or whatever--for at least a few more years. Let whatever talent she has (and it's difficult to discern how much talent she really does have, at her tender age) develop for another decade or so. And then let KAITLYN decide if a career in music, on television, or in Las Vegas is something she wants to pursue. She may not be as cute and girly by then, but she'll be more ready for her close-up all the same.

I agree. I personally wouldnt WANT my 4 year old doing a vegas act(who loves her on tv btw). Shes cute and good FOR HER AGE but it should end here. she may get commercials after this..thats ok ..just not a million and a vegas show

42. Jeff -
they need to have an age limit

43. Yahoo! Music User -
Honestly, thats right. I mean more than anything, would a 4 year old last in VEGAS? Come on....thats just not a place for a child. But on Talent, shes good.

44. dezzy -
im voting for katlin

45. Lara -
I thought Piers was right last night when he said he doesn't think she's ready to be the "queen". I hope America doesn't vote to put her through! She's cute, but not talented enough to win the million.

46. EMMA C -
it's one of the reasons i don't watch this show. i watched her repeat 'thank you' about 50 times as the judges offered their opinion and was disgusted by how 'trained' she was. i think its borderline abuse and absolutly shocking. this child's parents need to get a grip. more than anything, why would you subject your child to any kind of critisism? and i highly doubt anyone would PAY to see a 4-YEAR OLD perform in vegas....and by the way, what 4-YEAR OLD isn't cute, esp. when they sing!?

47. Cody -
I've thought the same thing from the start. It's nothing personal against her or children in general, but it annoyed me so bad every time she would get put through to the next level.

real smart to the mother that put her kid on a talent show where the winner get to perform in vegas. sure let your kid be exposed to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and prostitution before she hits double diggits in the age cotegory. this is how i would love to raise my children. and im a 23 year old male, these mothers make me sick, use your children to get your 15 minutes of fame. use your children to make them accomplish things you were to lazy to accomplish your self. hey i wish i played football in college, but im not going to force my kid a football. PATHETIC PARENTS HAVE NO PLACE IN AMERICA!

49. MH -
I could not agree with U more. ! This is too young for a child to do someting on her own. What in the world were the parents thinking. I reckon that it was for the parents own ego and pride that they would put their daughter into this position. Now the kid may even have a complex after this for the rest of her life. At what expense.? For what.? Her PARENTS.? How very sad for them and this little girl. I only hope that this will be a
eye opener for others that may want to put their kids on display for the general public.
Remember, The Ramsey Incident whereas the daughter was trying out to be the cutsey of the family and for the whole world to see.?
Once again, . . . . how sad. !!

I agree...she is adorable and I think people vote for her because they feel sorry for her...When you watch Kaitlyn....you hold your breath that she doesn't mess up...and face it....No one (Other than Pierce) wants to hurt this childs feelings...But don't worry about her winning...The Baton Twirler already has it wrapped up :) JMO

A little too much trouble to look-up Michael Jackson's real age? You're right about her being too young for the show. Any competition, sports or talent, should be fun for young kids and not involve too much pressure.

52. FrankS -
I agree - she should not have gotten this far. She is cute and sings like a 4 year old.

53. Yahoo! Music User -
You know, on second thought, put her through to Vegas, just don't let her DumbAss parents go crying to Dr Phil when she's 14, her parents spent all her money, she's knocked up, addicted to crack and turning tricks on the corner where her "BIG START" began.

54. Jessica B -
she's a very sweet young girl, & does have a great voice for a four year old - but really, she shouldn't be going forward based on cuteness or fear of hurting her little toddler feelings. i almost wish she had never made it past the first audition, even though she deserved to, just because it'll be so sad to see that little girl's heart get broken.

however, when this is all over, there's no doubt she could easily do something more fun & more appropriate for her age than a vegas show, like a disney movie or appearing on a children's show. regardless, i wish her the best of luck in doing what SHE wants to do.

55. amber -
i hate it when people like her parents reproduce. people like that shouldn’t even own dogs. how are you going to put your child in a situation like that? who do you really think was trying to reap the benefits of the million dollar contract? she’s four years old for gods sake, have some shame.....

56. Sc -
I blame the creators of the show and the producers for not putting an age requirement in place and I blame the parents for exploiting their child on National television. Let the little girl be a kid for God's sake!!!!

57. Kathryn -
Crazy to have her as one of the 20 finalists. Maybe one day when she's older, she can be on American Idol, but not now. They should have got her off the show alot sooner. Now she has her hopes up and will probably take it hard if she gets voted off.

58. HollyP -
I agree with the idea of an age limit. Poor Kaitlyn last night when Piers was *very gently* breaking it to her that perhaps her run was over. She was still crushed, as any 4-year-old would be, finding out she might not get what she wants. Remember the little girl whose act was called Elite, the one who did martial arts with her father? After her pirate-under-attack performance, she was eliminated - and she was absolutely in tears with disappointment. I don't recall her exact age, but I think she was about 10. Now, imagine adorable little Kaitlyn, being told that she didn't make the cut. It is cruel to even allow these kids to participate. Maybe there should be a kids' version of the show instead, but there would still be the painful losing factor. America's Got Talent should be more for adults, who have worked hard to present an at-least semi-professional act for consideration. The judges have already noted that many of the acts could not sustain a 90-minute show anywhere, let alone Las Vegas. The only reason they've been soft on Kaitly is precisely because she is so cute and adorable. I think she's great, and very precocious for a 4-year-old. But that's the extent of it, and I am dreading the inevitable night when she's told to go home. My heart will break for her - but it will still be the right decision. Shame on her parents for setting her up for this. any idiot coould have seen this coming - why didn't they? Someone should report them to Children's Social Welfare Services.

59. Brande F -
I feel that this little girl is adorable and sweet, I have a 4 year old of my own and I would never put her on a television show at 4 to sing. I feel that they have taken this to far she will be heart broken when she is sent home. I feel so bad for her.

60. Marc -
I agree 100%!
I am not sure what her parents are thinking.
Personally I think they should be ashamed of themselves.

It is not fair to the judges and certainly not fair to the little girl.
