Kaitlyn Maher: The Kid's Not All Right

Posted Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:56pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, I just want to state for the record, before I proceed with this post, that I am not some toddler-hating monster. Readers, please do not report me to Child Protective Services after reading this. I write this blog out of CONCERN, not scorn, for Kaitlyn Maher.

For those of you not watching America's Got Talent this season, contestant Kaitlyn Maher is an adorable, plucky 4-year-old girl. She sings pretty well for a 4-year-old. But the key part of that phrase is FOR A 4-YEAR-OLD. Her very young and raw talent just is not up to par with that of the older, more seasoned finalists (including some older children in familial bands like the Wright Kids and the Taubl Family). She has absolutely no business being on this show, a show that will award a $1 million contract for a full-time Las Vegas revue to its winner--presumably an adult winner capable of handling that much income, a grueling weekly performance schedule, and fast-lane life in Sin City. This little tot isn't even old enough to go to the bathroom by herself. How in the world is she supposed to put on a 90-minute Vegas show night after night if she actually wins this thing?

Furthermore, would anyone REALLY want to see Kaitlyn perform for 90 minutes, unless they were blood-related to her? Yeah, sure, Kaitlyn is cute. Like, fuzzy-baby-chick cute. So cute it's almost painful to look at her too long, with her missing teeth and askew hair bows and princess party dresses and Shirley Temple-esque chubby-cheeks. Probably the only reason she's made it this far, all the way to the top 20, is because she is cute. But can cuteness ultimately sustain a full-length Vegas show? I think not. Her schtick would get old (no pun intended) after about seven minutes.

And on that note, what will happen when she's not cute anymore? Every kid, no matter adorable she is at age 4, goes through a dreaded awkward stage. So if Kaitlyn wins America's Got Talent now, will she eventually lose her Vegas contract when she inevitably suffers from hormonal teenage acne that not even the strongest dose of ProActiv can cure?

Simply put, Kaitlyn Maher does not belong on America's Got Talent. Not YET, anyway. She should have never been selected for the top 40, and the viewing public should not have voted her through to the top 20 this week. And if she wins this competition, it will ruin not only this entire show but, much more importantly, her entire life. Because whether or not Kaitlyn has coasted through on cuteness or on actual talent so far, the main point is: It's cruel to keep her in this competition at this point.

See, while Kaitlyn seemed to enjoy performing on America's Got Talent at first--as she was oohed and ahhed and fussed over by the smitten judges and equally adoring live audience--now that the show has moved on to the stiff-competition round, she no longer seems to be having very much fun. Last night as she stood onstage next to scary, facially pierced firebreather Flambeaux awaiting her fate, she looked positively deer-in-headlights terrified, on the verge of tears, and utterly confused. It actually hurt me to watch her suffer:

Looking at Kaitlyn's frozen face of fear, it was hard for me to believe that the bright idea to audition for this show sprang from her 4-year-old brain. This girl is clearly not ready for prime time. She should have waited to audition for America's Got Talent season 16. Or, more, specifically, her parents should have waited before they dragged her to the auditions.

Anyway, things will only get tougher for Kaitlyn if she advances to the top 10. Or, especially, if she wins. She'll end up like Michael Jackson--who started singing as a toddler, was consequently robbed of his entire childhood, and now 45 or so years later is a baby-dangling wackjob shut-in with a chemically burned face and chimpanzees for friends. Or maybe Kaitlyn will become the next Britney Spears, shaving off her cute curly locks and forgetting to wear panties under her party dresses 20 years from now. Really, the best poor little Kaitlyn can hope for is to end up on VH1's "Celebreality" programming grid 30 years from now, with her own Breaking Bonaduce-style reality show chronicling her deeply ingrained emotional problems after growing up on television and in Vegas under the guidance of pushy stage parents.

For all these reasons, I say put Kaitlyn AND America's Got Talent viewers out of their misery. Let Kaitlyn go home and sing for FUN--to Kidz Bop albums or to Barney episodes or in school plays or whatever--for at least a few more years. Let whatever talent she has (and it's difficult to discern how much talent she really does have, at her tender age) develop for another decade or so. And then let KAITLYN decide if a career in music, on television, or in Las Vegas is something she wants to pursue. She may not be as cute and girly by then, but she'll be more ready for her close-up all the same.

shame on her parents

These shows are a total farce. The judges are hacks at best and really just using all of the talent to enhance ratings and that equals money for the producers. Agreed, the parents are fools and really exploited this child in a very "Jon Benet" type way. Too bad, however that is what the American Society has become. Just a bunch of idiot box watchers while a wealthy select few make the real life decisions because Joe 6 Pack is too concerned with who won what game.

she is a lovely child but she should never have been voted through in the first place. she took the place of an adult who was far more tallented and much more ready to fill the roll.

if you saw the show the night they were picking who would advance pierce said... oh come on she is cute and all but does she deserve to go on and sharon said i think america will love her. in other words the poor child was used for reatings. which actually makes sharon the bad guy here. using and child is among the worst things that anyone could do.
lets hope the little angle never realizes she was used. if she does she will think she was only cute but had no tallent.

i think she could be on tv, commercials, tv, whatever...just not vegas

Last nights show was tough on her. You could see it in her face. Yes, she's adorable. Yes, see sings really well for a four year old. But Piers was NOT mean to her. He handled the situation very diplomatically. He did not blatantly tell her see wasn't good enough. He talked to her in manner that she could understand. He wasn't rude. Maybe Sharon should take a reality trip. I could never imagine putting my child through that at that young an age. And I would never pay to see a 90 minute show of her. Don't get me wrong, she does have talent, but it's not up to par with the rest by any means.

I totally agree with Lindsey except for the fact Kaitlyn does not have missing teeth! Pay attention, get the faacts right! LOL

She's 4! She is cute! She is pixie, little girl, say "aahhh!" talented. Enough! I really do wish when she goes, which if the country is kind, she will, her parents are on stage with her to hug her and take her home where she belongs.

As cute as she is, she is no more or any less talented than any other 4 year old. What were her parents thinking, or were they thinking. She is not old enough to do Vegas. She should be thinking about playing with her dolls (or trucks) and about going to kindergarden. Let this little girl grow up normally. She will be an adult soon enough.

109. steve -
You are 100% right, she is cute and talented but way too young to be in Vegas.

110. Vivian -
The problem with this whole situation is that she is REALLY CUTE- but that is it.
For her parents to actually think she should compete for a million dollars and headline in Vegas is absurd.
This is one of the reasons that children cannot handle loosing.

Last night was the first night, this season, I saw the show. I watched painfully as Kaitlyn performed her little song. I've seen this type of singing in church talent shows...but I never expected to see something like this on national television (seriously). Are her parents pushing her for the big payday? She's a cute kid but do she have talent? Not so much. Please let her go home to resume her life as a pre-K kid. Shame on you, mom and dad.

Kaitlyn is adorable but I feel that the parents are exploiting this young child for their own greed, it is them that want the money, if she were to win. I wouldn't sit for 90min in a Vegas show to watch her, I'd rather watch the baton twirler or some other adult singer...not a kid.

113. Banu RekhaK -
I blame the show for not setting a age limit, may be 16+

This is the kind of crap you get when you go to dinner at your neighbors house. They parade their kids around and have them show off what they can do. Its O.K. for 5 minutes in a living room but not for a VEGAS SHOW! And when they would show the mom in the beginning she was so excited in the wings as if SHE were the one getting all the glory. The girl says thank you no matter if they told her she sounded like a humback whale in heat..she doesnt even know when she is being criticized and when she is being praised she just says thank you no matter what because she was trained like a seal to do that. I have a 5 year old and I would NEVER expose him to that type of criticism. He gets upset when an older kid calls him a baby, never mind if he was being trashed for something he thought he did well and loved. These parents SUCK!

Kaitlyn's really a cutie, but she's way too young for the harshness of Vegas and all that stage life has to offer. I have a 24-YEAR old and a 17-YEAR old who both perform. They decided at the ages of 14 (years) whether they wanted to get into the groups they are in. I didn't push them, and neither did my ex husband.
Much as I hate to say it, Piers was smack-on in what he said to Kaitlyn. I'm saying this to her "parents": WHAT were you thinking, allowing such a young, unformed child to audition??? Then, when she made it to the semi finals, allowing her to go further??? Where's your rocks for brains? Your stone for a heart? You smile and leak tears, but I wonder if you aren't the ultimate of "stage parents", who are trying to live your lives vicariously through your poor, adorable LITTLE girl. Pull her out before the final decision is made. I'm talking, not only as a parent, but as a former CPS social worker. I wouldn't report the blogger to CPS -- but I would report you, as Kaitlyn's parents.

Sefrable has the right idea to set a lower age limit for potential contestants to audition and compete. It should be no lower than 14 years of age. Children then have the ability to reason, see consequences, and, with the guidance and love of parents who are willing to be PARENTS, make the decision as to whether to audition or not.

Call Child Services on her Parents... this is a crime to make herdo this... So sad.

What's with some of these singers crying with a river of tears rolling down their cheeks..Good Grief..what a turn off..

118. twisty -
I agree with this blog. She is adorable but to me this is too much pressure for a 4-year old to be subjected to. She does not seem to handle negativity to well because she appeared as if she would cry when Piers was talking about her. Her parents need to give her time to get olde. I feel that she will feel like she is a loser if she does not win.

119. INGRID -
She is adorable, and can make it happen. You rock little girl. Don't let no one scary you.

she sucks
