Kaitlyn Maher: The Kid's Not All Right

Posted Wed Sep 10, 2008 4:56pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in Reality Rocks

OK, I just want to state for the record, before I proceed with this post, that I am not some toddler-hating monster. Readers, please do not report me to Child Protective Services after reading this. I write this blog out of CONCERN, not scorn, for Kaitlyn Maher.

For those of you not watching America's Got Talent this season, contestant Kaitlyn Maher is an adorable, plucky 4-year-old girl. She sings pretty well for a 4-year-old. But the key part of that phrase is FOR A 4-YEAR-OLD. Her very young and raw talent just is not up to par with that of the older, more seasoned finalists (including some older children in familial bands like the Wright Kids and the Taubl Family). She has absolutely no business being on this show, a show that will award a $1 million contract for a full-time Las Vegas revue to its winner--presumably an adult winner capable of handling that much income, a grueling weekly performance schedule, and fast-lane life in Sin City. This little tot isn't even old enough to go to the bathroom by herself. How in the world is she supposed to put on a 90-minute Vegas show night after night if she actually wins this thing?

Furthermore, would anyone REALLY want to see Kaitlyn perform for 90 minutes, unless they were blood-related to her? Yeah, sure, Kaitlyn is cute. Like, fuzzy-baby-chick cute. So cute it's almost painful to look at her too long, with her missing teeth and askew hair bows and princess party dresses and Shirley Temple-esque chubby-cheeks. Probably the only reason she's made it this far, all the way to the top 20, is because she is cute. But can cuteness ultimately sustain a full-length Vegas show? I think not. Her schtick would get old (no pun intended) after about seven minutes.

And on that note, what will happen when she's not cute anymore? Every kid, no matter adorable she is at age 4, goes through a dreaded awkward stage. So if Kaitlyn wins America's Got Talent now, will she eventually lose her Vegas contract when she inevitably suffers from hormonal teenage acne that not even the strongest dose of ProActiv can cure?

Simply put, Kaitlyn Maher does not belong on America's Got Talent. Not YET, anyway. She should have never been selected for the top 40, and the viewing public should not have voted her through to the top 20 this week. And if she wins this competition, it will ruin not only this entire show but, much more importantly, her entire life. Because whether or not Kaitlyn has coasted through on cuteness or on actual talent so far, the main point is: It's cruel to keep her in this competition at this point.

See, while Kaitlyn seemed to enjoy performing on America's Got Talent at first--as she was oohed and ahhed and fussed over by the smitten judges and equally adoring live audience--now that the show has moved on to the stiff-competition round, she no longer seems to be having very much fun. Last night as she stood onstage next to scary, facially pierced firebreather Flambeaux awaiting her fate, she looked positively deer-in-headlights terrified, on the verge of tears, and utterly confused. It actually hurt me to watch her suffer:

Looking at Kaitlyn's frozen face of fear, it was hard for me to believe that the bright idea to audition for this show sprang from her 4-year-old brain. This girl is clearly not ready for prime time. She should have waited to audition for America's Got Talent season 16. Or, more, specifically, her parents should have waited before they dragged her to the auditions.

Anyway, things will only get tougher for Kaitlyn if she advances to the top 10. Or, especially, if she wins. She'll end up like Michael Jackson--who started singing as a toddler, was consequently robbed of his entire childhood, and now 45 or so years later is a baby-dangling wackjob shut-in with a chemically burned face and chimpanzees for friends. Or maybe Kaitlyn will become the next Britney Spears, shaving off her cute curly locks and forgetting to wear panties under her party dresses 20 years from now. Really, the best poor little Kaitlyn can hope for is to end up on VH1's "Celebreality" programming grid 30 years from now, with her own Breaking Bonaduce-style reality show chronicling her deeply ingrained emotional problems after growing up on television and in Vegas under the guidance of pushy stage parents.

For all these reasons, I say put Kaitlyn AND America's Got Talent viewers out of their misery. Let Kaitlyn go home and sing for FUN--to Kidz Bop albums or to Barney episodes or in school plays or whatever--for at least a few more years. Let whatever talent she has (and it's difficult to discern how much talent she really does have, at her tender age) develop for another decade or so. And then let KAITLYN decide if a career in music, on television, or in Las Vegas is something she wants to pursue. She may not be as cute and girly by then, but she'll be more ready for her close-up all the same.

I thought the same thing she is cute... but way to young I have a 4 yr old and I would never subject her to that. Its her parents that should be reported to CPS!!!!

It is amazing how low television producers will go too sell an audience to its true consumers - advertisers. Just one thinks "they can't get any worse" they do, and they will continue to sink lower.

KAIT IS SO ADORABLE! BUT THERE REALLY ARE SO MANY WITH ALOT OF TALENT, IT WOULD'NT BE FAIR TO KEEP HER ON. YOU KNOW SOMEONE OUT THERE'S GOT THEIR EYE ON THIS KID FOR SOMETHING. SHE'S SMART FOR HER AGE AND CERTAINLY CAN BE USED IN COMMERCIALS OR SOMETHING!

144. Sucklehoney -
I totally agree she should have never been put through in the beginning. She's adorable and I'm glad to have gotten to see her perform but her parents are nutts to have put her through this. Perform at home for the local town parade or something like that where she can sing for fun and get to go home to bed everynight. I hurt for her last night and hope no one continues to vote her through. Even her coached thank you's and smile makes me want to cry for her.

4 years old is too young. Are Mom and Dad too lazy to work? They need to make a rule on age.

She should have never made it this far!!To many people on show that have a real talent and she just takes away from the Legitimacy of the REAL TALENT!just my 2 cent

SHE IS 4!!!! She could not possible headline a show in VEGAS! I kept yelling this at the TV last night! She should not even be on here. There should be a seperate show for kids. Look, I have grandkids so i'm definitely not hating on her. But come on now...the winner headlines a Las Vegas show! If she were to win, where would she headline? Circus-Circus near the carousel? And for 1 1/2 hours! COME ON, AGT, rethink your age requirements.

I totally agree she looked terrified last night and she is so young that i don't even think that she doesn't even understand what the judges are saying to her. The "thank yous" are just automatic. I'm actually worried that when she is voted off that it will really hurt her and i wish that they had never put her in this situation she's just way TOO YOUNG, not saying much for her parents who should have known better.

she has got just as much talent as some that i've seen. she is very young, but she also is a special child. give her a chance, who knows she might knock em all off stage!!!

I think she is an amazing 4-year-old with an uncanny ability to memorize songs and sing on key. Despite that, she still sounds like a 4-year-old girl singing and that just is not worth a million dollars or headlining in Las Vegas. She should not have made it this far but sentimental moms and dads all over the US keep voting for her over older adults with much more talent and experience. It really is a shame that the judges have to risk so much animosity in order to be honest with her and tell her she is just not ready or talented enough to win a national talent competition. Her folks should have done that a long time ago. It's a pity. She really is a cute and talented girl, but no way she is a top 10 or even 20 in this competition.

I agree with most of what you've said, some not so much.
One thing that amazed me is this: This child is simply adorable, but she is not 4 yrs old. Look at her teeth, a four year old's teeth aren't in the stages her's are in. I'm guessing atleast 6, maybe a little older. Remember when you lost your front teeth, then when they came in? Hers are already in. No this child is a little bit older than 4...
And I still agree she is way to young to be in these kinds of shows.

Oh calm down. I couldn't even get through this entire rant. If you write a blog like this then you should know something of the b.s. of the entertainment industry. The object was not necessarily for her to WIN, the object was for her to be seen. Shirley Temple started at right around the same age. If she's seen, then someone may forward who wishes to work with her. She might even get a part in a movie because someone thought she was so adorable. I didn't see it because I don't watch this stuff. So let's all take a breath and hope little Katie gets the help she needs to polish her more. Oh and you're just helping her along with causing the hooplah of this blog. She might had gone quietly back to the playground, but with people like you ranting like this and causing CONTROVERSY, she'll get her little 15 minutes of fame now and probably a break.

153. Kara -
I totally agree!!! Ya she's cute, but she sings just like every other 4 year old. I'm pretty sure I sounded like that when I was 4. They shouldn't even allow children that young to audition, it's ridiculous!

154. ValerieW -
I also agree with Laura M. As Kaitlyn kept getting closer to the final top 20, I also thought of Jon Benet.
There are children talent show on, they could have entered her in one of those.

155. Lioness -
She is a very brave little girl to be able to get up in front of people and sing. HOWEVER, she is going to get a warped sense of her own talent as she get's older, because everyone is thinks she's cute. Wrong message. As a musician, I can tell you that her voice is adorable for now, although she isn't always on key. She has a whispery 4 year old baby voice. Cute, but talent??? Not especially right now. Watch a Christina Agulara video when she was a child.....raw talent.

156. Yahoo! Music User -
She is completely adorable and sings pretty well for a 4 year old but she is not good enough to be on the show and she is not old enough to understand what she's doing. Shame on her parents for placing her in that position. Every parent thinks their child is the best at spmething...that doesn't necessarily mean he/she really is.

157. oolala -
I can think of 2 dozen 4 year olds that can sing... doesn't mean we go put em on TV... its not the mickey mouse club

158. Doug F -
OMG shame on the shows producer or whoever thought that putting her on this show was a good thing. Every 4 year old alive can sing along to the songs of their movies or shows. There is absolutely nothing special about this girl's singing. The little girl is a beautiful child but whoever thought up the idea that she was a fit for this show should get the ROYAL boot!

159. Regina H -
Lets face it people ... the kid can't sing
She's "average" looking .... but she really did not belong on the show .... she has no showmanship, she's been scripted what to say, and she should be allowed to grow at the pace of a 4 year old.

The child "can not" sing ....

After all the "Wow! What a sweet doll!" comments, this case is the closest I have seen to child abuse. Can anyone give the parents the ph. number of a Contest "four years old and under"? Please!?

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
