Song of the Day: Bruce Springsteen, "4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy) [Live]"

Posted Fri Aug 1, 2008 7:27am PDT by Rolling Stone in Rolling Stone Song Of The Day

Twenty-eight days before E Street Band keyboarist Danny Federici died of cancer, he joined Bruce Springsteen onstage in Indiana for the last time. This gut-wrenching performance from that night is the best track from the new live EP Magic Tour Highlights. Despite his illness, Federici nails his accordion parts and every line of the track, which takes on a new meaning in light of the circumstances. Whe Bruce sings, "For me, this boardwalk life is through," it's clear he's not only waxing nostalgic about Asbury Park - he's also saying goodbye to the man he had played alongside since he was 19.
