Song of the Day: Rick Springfield, "Mr. PC"

Posted Thu Aug 28, 2008 7:16am PDT by Chuck Eddy in Rolling Stone Song Of The Day

Jessie's rival has given his powerpop more power lately; here, he swipes a Stone Temple Pilots riff, incorporates old cartoon crosstalk, and aims a rambunctious melody at either political correctness or his personal computer: "A brand new way of saying nothing at all."

Rick Springfield - Mr. PC

great. great. His "greatest hits CD" is a regular on my Ipod. My IPOD also has BMRC, Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, Jimmy Eat World, Weezer, the Foos, Butch Wlaker etc. Rick is one of the most under-rated pop song writers of all time.

If you actually listen to the words, you would know he is talking about political correctness, not personal computers. It doesn't sound like a ripoff of anyone else's music to me.
A lot of Rick's more recent music is more powerful (ex: Shock Denial Anger Acceptance 2004). He has produced lots of quality stuff since Jessie's Girl, just not gotten the recognition he deserves.
This is a fun, energetic song from a great album. If you haven't already purchased Venus in Overdrive, you should definitely add it to your collection. And check Rick out in concert - he can play a mean guitar & the crowd interaction is unparalleled.

Mr. PC is a nice tune but if Mr. Eddy took time to listen to the words he would realize it was about political correctness. Better yet if he listened to all of the new CD he might have chosen a better song for song of the day. Try Time Stand Still or Venus In Overdrive those are awesome!!!

Give a closer listen to "Mr.PC." It actually does speak big to our country's political issues of "covering" our problems, etc. The lyrics are good and totally speaks of our world today. Rick's "Venus in Overdrive" album is a great listen, so don't give up hope on his music just yet. This album truly speaks truth and feelings. Go Rick Springfield!

haha...like Rick Springfield was sitting around saying I think I will swipe a STP riff that is hilarious. This is by far my favorite song on this CD. Its has a current sound and could be a radio hit if given a chance. My humble opinion.

Great song. Thanks.

I dig this cd in it's entirety, and Mr. PC is a very cool tune. I love when RS takes on heavy subjects and proves he is worth sooo much more than Jessie's Girl.

I am a HUGE Rick Springfield fan, but sorry, this song is not about political correctness. It's about pandering, which is something different entirely. The lyrics coupled with the title kinda make it clear, though, that he and his cowriter don't know the difference, which is a shame. The song is about personal computers as much as it's about political correctness--not at all.

Thanks for posting this. Mr. PC is a Great song as are all the song on Rick's new CD Venus in Overdrive. As with any song what it is about is a matter of interpretation. This is a song I totally relate to and reflects how I feel alot of time. Mr. PC as well as Mr. Springfield Rock !!!

I think it's a great song filled with creativity and it IS about political correctness (clearly, if you listen). I appreciate this new effort from Rick Springfield and actually the whole cd is great too.

"A brand new way of saying nothing at all"-I think you guys did get the meaning of the song. About a personal computer (dot org-haha). Overall I found it upbeat and catchy (very pop). I like it. What specific song has a similar riff? I don't get it. If you say that you should give the info to back it up (its only right). Thanks

MORON!

this guy doesnt even know if his name is chuck or eddy. so be kind, he is confused.

lol...... seriously, do you read what you write before you print it ? did you even listen to the music for more than a couple seconds ?

Idiot!

I've heard the song. Not one of my favorites on the CD. 3 warning shots is much better and edgier.

Aside from the fact that you missed the point of Mr. Springfield's song, you accused him and Matt Bissonette, of "ripping off the STP". In expirence most musicians and songwriters are "influenced" by other musicians and songwriters. Every artist has someone that they love to hear as well. They are just like us in that respect. I love many artists from different genres of music and my life is full of pleasure, fun and comfort from them. SpringfieldBissonette they are the same. They reflect that in their songs on VIO.As for MR.PC--it is a good song that stands strong because of the lyrics(which you need to take another listen to)and music works for it.

I think the reviewer is being cheeky with playing dumb about questioning whether Springfield's target is his personal computer or political correctness.biting :)He knows.

This song is awesome in it's flamethrower approach to poltical correctness. I am somewhat surprised he took shots at liberal groups (ACLU and moveon.org). Just assumed he was a typical entertainer and loved the left. Maybe not. Cool.

Springfield's songwriting has always been underrated and much more mature than he's ever been given credit for. Clever plays on words, serious subject matter, etc. Venus in Overdrive may be his best ever. Saw him live about 6 wks ago. One of the best concerts I've ever seen.

Is Rick a conservative? Does sound like he's taking shots a liberal groups. Good for him!

Listen UP-CHUCK!
Its obvious this song went over your little head.

MR PC is hooky as hell and lyrically brilliant...lots of metaphors and color. Again Rick shows us he can not only keep up with our expectations but EXCEED THEM!! He keeps pumping out those amazing melodic catchy power pop songs...and still looks adorably handsome even now as he approaches 60! His onstage energy is unparalled....his concerts leave you on a high you cant shake off...the way he interacts with the audience ...its like he blurs the line between the stage and the crowd....he captivates you like NO OTHER ENTERTAINER CAN!! Its an addictive experience!!!!!

RICK proves his old songs stand the test of time and new ones are destined to be classics as wel!!

GO RICK WE LOVE YOU!!!!!
