How Much Prince Is 2 Much?

Posted Mon Jan 5, 2009 12:51pm PST by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

No one could ever accuse Prince of being lazy. The ultra-talented funkateer recently told the Los Angeles Times that he plans on releasing three albums in 2009, all of which will explore different musical ideas and all without any major label help. Two of the discs will be Prince affairs (the pop-oriented MPLSOUND and the guitar-heavy Lotus Flower), while the third, Elixir, is a Svengali job for some singer named Bria Valente.

Now I'm the kind of person who has seen Under A Cherry Moon multiple times and paid big money for both Crystal Ball and One Nite Alone...Live! (never heard of 'em? Exactly)--yet I find myself worried rather than excited about Prince's upcoming output.

His purple majesty has always been prolific. During the height of his popularity in the '80s, he was putting out an album a year when sales rivals like Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen were taking three and four years between studio releases. But that fecundity came with a cost. While Prince's music is never less than interesting, it isn't always great. The guy, it turns out, is human. By the mid-'90s, his flood of new material had drowned out casual listeners. Slowly but surely, the artist once known as TAFKAP became an underground phenomenon, his descent fuelled by rote R&B, hectoring lyrics, and jazz fusion excursions.

Then he was quiet--no new studio material arrived in the three years between 2001's The Rainbow Children and 2004's Musicology. But the latter, straightforwardly funky album was exactly what the mainstream wanted. Unsurprisingly, the ensuing tour and his induction into the Rock Hall of Fame helped transform Prince from gifted weirdo in the basement to beloved icon. Two more well-regarded albums (3121 and Planet Earth) followed in 2006 and 2007. And last year, Prince basked in the adoration of the indie crowd, blowing minds with an epic set at Coachella.

What all this means is that Prince has some goodwill capital to spend. I'd hate to see him blow it on genre exercises. Even if the music on the new albums is great, its impact will be blunted by its quantity. Unfortunately, when Prince competes against himself, there's a good chance no one will win.

He was great in the 80's and unforgetable!

Prince is anything but predictable musically... and I am one of his most ardent fans. Does David Bowie look exactly MALE? Does KD Lang look exactly FEMALE? No, and no, and none of it matters one jot. Prince can still play, doesn't matter WHAT he looks like! lol

best super bowl ever too!

Well, he is only one of the best artist's I have ever seen, pure electricity in concert. I do have it first hand that he can be difficult, so can Barbara Streisand and she's impossible! But talented. The last concert I saw, he put out a good message, if you were there, You know. I can only hope he stops trying to limit the sharing of his music, and selling admission to his websites. You have to admit, giving away CD's at the concert was a cool idea!

Prince is weird -- no doubt. But try to deny his talent and work ethic. How many artists today play ALL the instruments -- guitar, bass, drums, keys, etc. How many produce, arrange and write their own songs? How many own their own recording studios? That's Prince. And three albums this year? Big deal. The guy has enough material already recorded to release 2 albums a year for the next 50 years. Hyper prolific? You bet. And if some of his work doesn't chart in the top 10, I don't care. Kudos to Prince for working hard and releasing lots of songs. He's more interested in sharing his work than charting hit singles. Bring 'em on. (Lose the eye liner and heels, but bring on the new stuff!)

Prince is one sexy man. Yes I admit he is short and I do not like his religion, but one hell of a guitar player and singer. Sex sells and he is all about that and a bag of chips. When doves cry is very special to me. My first son was born the year 1984 when it was popular and I really like princes music.

I don't care what any loser music critic says...Prince is in a universe by himself. He can record what he wants, when he wants...and the music will speak for itself. PERIOD!

Ok #1 u are so in the dark. Not only do you sound racist but more of a dumb ass at that. You not only have a problem w/black ppl, but interracial black ppl. Prince is Italian and African American. So am I, he's the greatest. Those are two mean combo's so I'd be careful before u end up w/a dead horse's head in ur bed. LOL How many artist do u know can play every instrument. Obama UR PRESIDENT is also mixed. So either u have a fear of black people or u are just plain IGNORANT! There is help out there for ppl like u!

Prince is a self-made man, he came a long ways on his very own. He had no back-up like the Jackson's. I believe he has already earned his props. Number 1, just try to walk in his shoes. And as far as Obama is concerned, I think you are the one who thinks he is a savior, remember it came out of your mouth, not his.

16. David -
Prince will always be a musical genius yet im afraid his best days are behind him...That Little Red Corvette left a long time ago...

I don't listen to Prince much now, but used to in the 80's. Brings back great memories and am glad he's still doing his thing! He is GREAT at what he does. I like his look as he would be boring another way. Blessings to all!

I agree his best days are behind him, ever since he turned J. Witness, his musci has been nomadic at best while forgetting the roots of which he came and fans grew to love.
