Can Green Day Do It Again?

Posted Tue Apr 21, 2009 2:35pm PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

For whatever reason, I have a distinct memory of a televised Green Day interview from almost eight years ago, when the band appeared on MuchMusic (a Canadian counterpart to MTV) to support the release of its best-of comp, International Superhits!. The brief Q&A probably stuck with me because of Billie Joe Armstrong's unflattering comparison, and subsequent demonstration, of Scott Stapp's vocal similarity to Cher. But more important, I also remember the Green Day frontman talking about how he was worried that releasing a greatest hits album might be a signal of his band's irrelevance. At the time, I was inclined to think Billie Joe should have gone with his gut.

In the years following the megamillion-selling success of 1994's Dookie, the Oakland wiseacres appeared to be on the same path to diminished sales and irrelevance as contemporaries like the Offspring and Live. Then, in 2004, came American Idiot. I have a distinct memory about that too. A few weeks after the album dropped, I went down to the record store at the mall and bought a copy, mostly because I'd been digging the title track, which was also the lead-off single. I immediately popped the disc into my car stereo. Twelve minutes later, having been blasted by "Idiot" and the epic-length "Jesus Of Suburbia," I realized--in that brief time frame--that the band mattered again.

A concept album about suburban American disappointment, the album sounded angrier and hungrier (while remaining catchy) than anything else Green Day had done. Through sheer force of imagination and skill, as well as a nation primed by George Bush to vent some anti-establishment spleen, the band reestablished itself as top-rank rock stars. Accordingly, American Idiot sold more copies than the band's previous three albums combined.

It's impossible to know how 21st Century Breakdown, the trio's follow up, will be received when it comes out on May 15. Will a second concept album about societal breakdown excite listeners the same way that the first did? Is five years too long of a gap between studio efforts? It'll be interesting to see what happens. But I'd counted Green Day out once. I won't do it again.

How do you think it'll do?

I like Green Day. Not true punks you say? True. But they ARE obnoxious. So who cares?

2. Anne -
Eh, Green Day still has the "hip" factor (I think). They act rebellious and make people feel rebellious without anyone ever actually rebelling...

3. DUDE -
American Idiot was great because of the music...If the new one is full of killer tunes, that is all that matters...everything else is just window dressing...

21st Century Breakdown is gonna blow AI out of the water (and I mean that in a good way!). They are just a killer band, with amazing talent, and have yet to hit their peak. I can't wait to hear the whole album, and see them play live again, and I'm looking forward to seeing their stage production of American Idiot in Berkeley this fall!

Green Day is a great band and American Idiiot was a once in a lifetime album. This new one will sell well and the 1 song I've heard is good. But no band has ever released a truly great album to follow it up with another that can be as great as the previous. The album will be good no doubt but as great as American Idiot I seriously doubt it.

American Idiot was a major album in history for this generation. I think the long break between albums will give way to higher record sales due to the anticipation of the next steps for this band. As long as Green Day isn't sing the shtick in their lyrics, I think it should be a solid album.I hope the reinvent their sound a little bit like they did for American Idiot. Green Day has a distinct sound and image, no matter how good the new album is it will never be another American Idiot and all the critics will let us know that

American Idiot was a phenomenal concept album/rock opera - we hadn't seen a good one of those in a loooong time (probably since Operation: Mindcrime). I have always been a fan of Green Day and their catchy punk-pop; AI took them to a new level in my mind, and I look forward to hearing their new album.
