Can Green Day Do It Again?

Posted Tue Apr 21, 2009 2:35pm PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

For whatever reason, I have a distinct memory of a televised Green Day interview from almost eight years ago, when the band appeared on MuchMusic (a Canadian counterpart to MTV) to support the release of its best-of comp, International Superhits!. The brief Q&A probably stuck with me because of Billie Joe Armstrong's unflattering comparison, and subsequent demonstration, of Scott Stapp's vocal similarity to Cher. But more important, I also remember the Green Day frontman talking about how he was worried that releasing a greatest hits album might be a signal of his band's irrelevance. At the time, I was inclined to think Billie Joe should have gone with his gut.

In the years following the megamillion-selling success of 1994's Dookie, the Oakland wiseacres appeared to be on the same path to diminished sales and irrelevance as contemporaries like the Offspring and Live. Then, in 2004, came American Idiot. I have a distinct memory about that too. A few weeks after the album dropped, I went down to the record store at the mall and bought a copy, mostly because I'd been digging the title track, which was also the lead-off single. I immediately popped the disc into my car stereo. Twelve minutes later, having been blasted by "Idiot" and the epic-length "Jesus Of Suburbia," I realized--in that brief time frame--that the band mattered again.

A concept album about suburban American disappointment, the album sounded angrier and hungrier (while remaining catchy) than anything else Green Day had done. Through sheer force of imagination and skill, as well as a nation primed by George Bush to vent some anti-establishment spleen, the band reestablished itself as top-rank rock stars. Accordingly, American Idiot sold more copies than the band's previous three albums combined.

It's impossible to know how 21st Century Breakdown, the trio's follow up, will be received when it comes out on May 15. Will a second concept album about societal breakdown excite listeners the same way that the first did? Is five years too long of a gap between studio efforts? It'll be interesting to see what happens. But I'd counted Green Day out once. I won't do it again.

How do you think it'll do?

Green Day can do it. They're awesome, they pulled off one of the best concert DVD's ever, they'll be fine. Billie Joe has nothing to worry about. Knowing Your Enemy is a really good song, I'm hooked on it. GD is forever, no matter what they decide to do next.

I Love This Group. They Have Excellent Music. I Think They Will Make It Back Again. They Were At Livestock To. They Were Really,Really Awesome Band. Now There Is One Rock Group That I Can't Stand Because They Ruined A Band That Opened Up For His SORRY BUTT. The Lead Singer Got Burt Because Of The Stage Light's. His Name Was (James) From Metaica. And The Group That Is No Longer Making Albulms Is ((GUNS N ROSES))!!. They Are So,So,So Sorry Now.

Green Day is real punk all the way. And with the album previews I've heard from www.greenday.com, their new album is better then ever! I think it's one of the best albums they've made!

If you can't wait till May 15, they have links on their website so you can listen to the whole album now! I did and I loved it!

greenday's albumwill be very successful because they are probally the rock band of the decade. It's almost certain, unless something unforseen occurs, that they will never have another album as a big as american idiot. I'm psyched though about the new album and I look forward to see them live

I have both albums and they both are better than the other in different ways. "Idiot" is faster and more edgy than to "Breakdown", but "Breakdown" has more meaningful songs and plus Billie Joe sings in falsetto. Also I can relate more "Breakdown" more than "Idiot" because it deals more with religious hipocrisy(which there is a lot of), politics, and love than the two characters in it. Both albums are great but I think Green Day will be even bigger now that "Breakdown" is out.

And for those of you that say Green Day isn't punk, name a "real" punk band that's still around. Face it! Punk music is dead, but Green Day is keeping the punk mentality alive. Punk was never about the music, it was about the lyrics.

I just watched an awesome performance from Green Day at a secret show in NYC. They played their hit “Know Your Enemy” and other new songs from their amazing new cd 21st Century Breakdown. I wish I was there, but these performances definitely make me feel like I was front row!! Check it out along with some really great pictures!
