Why Susan Boyle Doesn’t Matter

Posted Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:53am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog
I finally broke down over the weekend and watched the Susan Boyle performance that everyone's been plotzing over. For those of you that don't know, Boyle is the, as my grandmother would generously say, "plain-looking" 47-year-old Scottish spinster whose lovely performance on April 11th of "I Dreamed A Dream" on Britain's Got Talent has turned her into an international sensation, garnering tens of millions of YouTube views and generating all manner of pontificating on the meaning of her popularity.

We're dealing with an ugly duckling tale. That's it. Susan Boyle is by conventional pop standards, unattractive, but sings like an angel, and her notoriety, as the thinking goes, is thus a heartwarming rebuke to an entertainment culture that far too often values looks rather than skill. If this episode sounds familiar, it's because it is--Britain's Got Talent spawned the exact same story two years ago when Paul Potts, a stocky cell-phone store manager, won the competition on the strength of his renditions of tenor arias like "Nessun Dorma." Your mother may have emailed you about him.

Of course, fairy tales are fiction. Potts' success did not result in a radical restructuring of show business norms (though his debut album, One Chance, did go double platinum in the U.K.)--extremely attractive entertainers are still more likely to get the good gigs. Susan Boyle's moment will have a similarly unremarkable effect. For all the back patting (see, we're not superficial!) her moment has allowed us to indulge in, the fact remains that popular entertainment is largely about helping us escape the mundane, whether it's for two hours or the length of a YouTube clip. And it's a lot easier to do that when the person doing the entertaining doesn't look like a crazy cat lady who lives next door. Right now Susan Boyle is an exception. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking she's going to be the rule.

Why David Marchese Doesn't Matter.
People like David, write blogs about stuff to get attention. sadly, it works on occasion, but never fear, David is probably , how should I say it? "plain-looking" might be the word, and he is most likely the male equivalent of a spinster, attempting some Ugly_Duckling fairy tale of writing which actually has any value.

Blog away david for your 15 seconds of diatribe..it's simply internet fodder, done better by so many more.

britney spears can lipsync??? maybe yes, maybe no, but she sure looks good in "next to nothing". she can lipsync me to sleep any day of the week.

What makes Susan Boyle unique is that she has the voice every woman wished she had. It may not be the best operatic voice, and it wouldn't work for rock, but it is "thee voice."

44. RIPUGA6 -
that lady sings her azz off. In the days of radio (when music was real) it didnt matter what you looked like just could you sing. Screw you writer what do YOU look like?

45. kRiStA -
Anyone with a good voice 'should' be able to make it, regardless of looks. You're saying, 'let's not fool ourselves', speak for yourself, America fell in love with her voice, not her looks, period.

I don't care what they look like, as long as they have the vocal chords, and Susan does that!! I just hope they don't try to make her up too much to look like the so-called "stars"! When her CD comes out, I will definitely buy one, just as I did Paul Potts, because they have wonderful and unique voices. Hooray for Susan!!

When I listen to a CD, MP3 or even my old Vinyl, I don't stare at the picture, but listen to the voice and the music. It's the music video generation that wants good looking, can't carry a tune singers. Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn weren't pin-ups, but they could outsing anyone today.

What a hopeless waste of space this "comment" was. Nobody said Susan Boyle was going to change the world. What we said is, she is a remarkable, extraordinary talent. Period. If she makes albums up to this level, they will sell, no matter what sort of hair style she wears. It was never about restructuring show biz norms...there ARE no show biz norms, which the writer seems not to understand. (You really do wonder what kind of retard writes these blogs!) Janice Joplin, for example, was no Grace Kelly, yet she had a spectacular career. We are just appreciating Boyle for what she is: exceptional,

Is it you who could be wrong or the 40 million U-tube viewers?
I will go with the majority.

Well, it's likely to be better to be a RICH ugly duckling who can sing than an unknown ugly duckling who can sing, no?

51. Yahoo! Music User -
What does it matter what a person looks like? She sings beautifully. Close your eyes and listen!

52. MONTANA LADY -
I FOR ONE, DON'T CARE WHAT SHE LOOKS LIKE, I CAN HARDLY WAIT FOR AN ALBUM TO COME OUT IN THE UNITED STATES. I WILL BUY EVERYONE SHE PUTS OUT. SHE IS WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

53. LindaM -
I say with a chin lift, waxed eyebrows, new hairdo and fashion adviser we may all be equally surprised at how attractive she really is...everyone deserves a chance. If she is unwilling to get the makeover - the heck with her!

54. Jenn B -
I agree with Joy. I read all these blogs on here that say because she is unattractive she will probably not go very far in life after the show and probably lose, but I strongly believe that anything is possible. And that is negative thinking- there are quite a few times where the underdog has overcome the odds and gotten to the "top". Your way of thinking is only an opinion, not a fact.

55. Buddy -
My gosh, why do we have to shred and analyze every little thing that is good in this world. Leave the poor woman alone, and let her enjoy the fame, however brief it is! In the meantime, all you crude know-it-all's need to get a life.

56. Yahoo! Music User -
Stated in a mean way, what the guy says is like most comment, very obvious. The odds that this kind person will become the same kind of celebrity as Paris Hilton diminish in their descent from improbable to impossible. Bad? Bad for Ms. Boyle? No.

57. Jo -
Your right in that the entertainment industry will not change their standers just becasue a few "Ugly Ducklings" win a few compatitions. The flip side of that is the entertainment industry and everyone who is connected to it is at the mercy of the masses. If enought people like someone we have been know to propel them into stardom. Case in point Seth Rogan. You only have a job because people like to read your blog. If you upset to many people you will be out of a job. So your right we can not change how the entertianment industry conducts them selves but we do control who succeeds in it.

58. Randy -
If she has one moment in the sun--good for her! I don't think anyone has suggested that she's going to become the watermark for entertainment. Give her her due and leave it at that. The public will ultimately make the decision, regardless of what sour-grapes critics say. They always have.

59. greengirl -
Thank you captain obvious, I hope you didn't get paid to write this.

60. gerald -
I think she has wonderful voice, to bod she isn't a grandmother, then you could have more ugly things to say about her.
