Why Susan Boyle Doesn’t Matter

Posted Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:53am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog
I finally broke down over the weekend and watched the Susan Boyle performance that everyone's been plotzing over. For those of you that don't know, Boyle is the, as my grandmother would generously say, "plain-looking" 47-year-old Scottish spinster whose lovely performance on April 11th of "I Dreamed A Dream" on Britain's Got Talent has turned her into an international sensation, garnering tens of millions of YouTube views and generating all manner of pontificating on the meaning of her popularity.

We're dealing with an ugly duckling tale. That's it. Susan Boyle is by conventional pop standards, unattractive, but sings like an angel, and her notoriety, as the thinking goes, is thus a heartwarming rebuke to an entertainment culture that far too often values looks rather than skill. If this episode sounds familiar, it's because it is--Britain's Got Talent spawned the exact same story two years ago when Paul Potts, a stocky cell-phone store manager, won the competition on the strength of his renditions of tenor arias like "Nessun Dorma." Your mother may have emailed you about him.

Of course, fairy tales are fiction. Potts' success did not result in a radical restructuring of show business norms (though his debut album, One Chance, did go double platinum in the U.K.)--extremely attractive entertainers are still more likely to get the good gigs. Susan Boyle's moment will have a similarly unremarkable effect. For all the back patting (see, we're not superficial!) her moment has allowed us to indulge in, the fact remains that popular entertainment is largely about helping us escape the mundane, whether it's for two hours or the length of a YouTube clip. And it's a lot easier to do that when the person doing the entertaining doesn't look like a crazy cat lady who lives next door. Right now Susan Boyle is an exception. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking she's going to be the rule.

For once, we had the opportunity to see beauty, not via the eyes, but via our ears and hearts. Since there are soooooooo many more average and plain looking individuals inhabiting the earth, perhaps, just perhaps, WE can make her famous and she will not be a one song wonder.

She will not soon be forgotten !

What a horrible editorial! How dare you say that anyone "doesn't matter". That's just plain cruel and mean, and inappropriate to say about any person. I don't know who you are to be given the opportunity to have a byline on an internationally read blog, but you are way out of line. I will take the effort and write Spin directly, no one should have allowed such a cruel blog to be published.

I guess any fool can write a column for the Internet.

Wow, talk about a buzz-kill. Can't we just enjoy the moment, however brief?

i don't think she's ugly. she's a beautiful person with a beautiful voice. shame on you for being so shady and cold.

I have yet to hear of one person from this show, so Susan Boyle and all the others from this year I expect the same. They may be popular in England but none of them have or will be successful on this side of the 'pond'

What u say may or may not be true.
but in the USA we give the underdogs a chance, and like to see them win occasionally.
I'd rather see my kids admire Susan Boyle over Britney Spears anyday of the week.
No, Susan Boyle does not matter..... but neither do you.
I might remember Susan Boyles' name - but not yours.

unless you're listening to a radio, singing is both a visual and audio experience, and recording artists get graded on both accounts. Some have the look but only OK vocals, and others have mediocre looks but great vocals.

I am sorry folks, I dont get it. The lady is ugly and I really couldnt understand a single word of that song she sang. So whats the sensastion?

70. jana -
Right. We get it. Obviously, she is not the next Britney or Miley, but I doubt she wants to be. I think she will have some measure of success-earning a living and respect as a professional singer.

But thanks for pointing out the obvious.

We appreciate it!

I'll reserve comment on this until after I've seen a picture of David Marchese.

Grandma Moses started to paint when she was about 85 years old and in five years her paintings were worth in the thousands of dollars and that was back in 1960s. She lived to be over 100 years old and was invited to meet President Nixon.
Now, Grandma's paintings are each worth at least $100,000. I think it is great that people can discover their talents no matter how they look and how old they are. Everybody has some talent that no body else has, they just have to develop it.

Susan Boyle is overrated. Seriously, if you go to an opera you get stuff like Susan Boyle all the time. You never heard anyone say it's not over til the hot skinny model chick sings...no it's not over til the fat lady sings. And that fat lady has an incredible voice. Sure, Boyle is talented, but so are thousands of singers in theater...and that's exactly what she did. She sang a showtune. She is one of thousands that can sing that song that well and is not attractive. In the end, who really cares? It's apparent that is the way to be successful in Britain since the new sensation is a 10 year old girl singing I Could Have Danced and oh my god they couldn't believe her voice either. *yawn*

Oh please. Tell us about YOUR Double Platinum album!!!

I agree with Joy W. we don't know where Susan is going to go. She is a genuine down to earth sweetheart. And for your information she's no longer the ugly duckling that you talk about, she had a make over and she beautiful both inside and out.

Did anyone else get the real point behind what happened to us all and the Susan Boyle moment? Sadly, Britain's Got Talent may be
trying to "redo" that real moment with Boyle with other fakey such moments which are not working! Susan Boyle will sing whether we or anyone else puts her on the "pop" world stage or not! And she is a REAL talent of voice whether we like her looks or not. Paul, by the way, is now a millionaire whether he's gorgeous or not. Both Susan and Paul are genuine in their own right with or without the judge crew on BGT.

77. Connie -
She sings better than Bob Dylan! He sings through his nose!

78. RogerB -
One doesn't need to be particularly beautiful to make a mark in either opera or musical theatre. Ethel Merman, Luciano Pavarotti, Tim Curry, Louis Armstrong are a few notable examples, and there are obviously many more. What you need is the ability and the desire to sing well and act convincingly, and the will power to keep plugging away while you build a reputation in the face of a whole lot of competition. Something like these TV shows can give a potential career a big jumpstart, but after that it's entirely up to the individual to make something of the opportunity. Pop music is different... that's more about the look than about the quality of the music, because of the closeups and the constant push for new faces. That's why "American Idol" and "Britain's Got Talent" are such completely different shows.

79. Lisa -
what happend to the 6yr old I liked that one

80. Bjork -
What a bad attitude you have. You're a jerk. You don't know what the future holds for this women. As for you though, I'll willing to bet that you will go nowhere. GFY
