Why Susan Boyle Doesn’t Matter

Posted Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:53am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog
I finally broke down over the weekend and watched the Susan Boyle performance that everyone's been plotzing over. For those of you that don't know, Boyle is the, as my grandmother would generously say, "plain-looking" 47-year-old Scottish spinster whose lovely performance on April 11th of "I Dreamed A Dream" on Britain's Got Talent has turned her into an international sensation, garnering tens of millions of YouTube views and generating all manner of pontificating on the meaning of her popularity.

We're dealing with an ugly duckling tale. That's it. Susan Boyle is by conventional pop standards, unattractive, but sings like an angel, and her notoriety, as the thinking goes, is thus a heartwarming rebuke to an entertainment culture that far too often values looks rather than skill. If this episode sounds familiar, it's because it is--Britain's Got Talent spawned the exact same story two years ago when Paul Potts, a stocky cell-phone store manager, won the competition on the strength of his renditions of tenor arias like "Nessun Dorma." Your mother may have emailed you about him.

Of course, fairy tales are fiction. Potts' success did not result in a radical restructuring of show business norms (though his debut album, One Chance, did go double platinum in the U.K.)--extremely attractive entertainers are still more likely to get the good gigs. Susan Boyle's moment will have a similarly unremarkable effect. For all the back patting (see, we're not superficial!) her moment has allowed us to indulge in, the fact remains that popular entertainment is largely about helping us escape the mundane, whether it's for two hours or the length of a YouTube clip. And it's a lot easier to do that when the person doing the entertaining doesn't look like a crazy cat lady who lives next door. Right now Susan Boyle is an exception. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking she's going to be the rule.

Honestly I was trying to figure out what the big deal was... she's a GOOD singer, but not outstanding. And big whoop -- most of the "hot" singers are not really that great; it's all over-produced garbage, not real singing. I never knew one had to be hot to be expected to sing well.

And by the way David, no one will remember your writing either. Hopefully you will live to be a hateful 90 year old b#$ching in the nursing home. lol.

At least she contributed something positive to the world.

30 david marchese: I THINK YOU HAVE A VERY SICK OUT-LOOK ON LIFE AND YOU ARE PITIFUL IN OUTLOOK ON LIFE.EVERYTHING DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK BEAUTIFUL TO BE BEAUTIFUL, YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK

what a crappy article. you're not so hot yourself buckwheat

It's looks that matter and youth. You get old you become nothing, people don't even see you. Think I am negative? Just wait.

Mr. Marchese,

The real question is not about whether Susan Boyle has or hasn't started new trends in the entertainment business. The real question to be asked is why you have a job commentating music for Yahoo. You writing is pretty much garbage, your sentence structure is mediocre at best, and the tone of your writing is condescending. Instead of stoking your own shattered ego by writing this hateful garbage, do something productive, you insignificant little turd. Most of you so-called "professional" bloggers should move out of your mother's basements and put full attention to your primary jobs- pizza delivery boys and gas station attendants.

Have a nice day, you wretched little man!

Eh, I don't agree with you completely. No, Susan Boyle isn't going to put Beyonce out of business. But she may have reminded us that there can still be room in show business for people who don't look like they just walked out of a video.

Paul Potts? He was performing opera -- an impressive feat, but a lot less accessible to the masses. And double platinum in the UK is nothing to sneeze at.

Since you yourself admit that Susan Boyle "sings like an angel" ... wouldn't you really prefer it if you were wrong?

88. Buddy -
I agree with you "Montana Lady"! That's what it's all about! Wish there was more like us in this world :-)!

Authenticity is a beautiful thing. Susan Boyle isn't a fraud and it took courage to go out on that stage. She doesn't need to go anywhere to be valuable she already is because God created her. So, be kind, love mercy and if you are angry or negative get some inner-healing and let your true-self emerge. Blessings on all.

negativity...just jealous~aren't you?

She might be ulgy but she's got a great voice. Isn't that enough for people????????? :[

it does matter about the outside it matters about the inside

I think you've missed the point. While some may focus on the "ugly duckling" similarities to the story of Susan Boyle, I would venture to say that most didn't find her performance inspiring for those reasons. She didn't bring tears to my eyes because she does not have your traditional popstar good looks but has an amazing voice. There are plenty of people that fit into that category. She was inspiring because her experience was something that I, and many others, could relate to. The world is our cynical audience. There are many people in this world that are expecting us to fail- some even hoping that we will. But like Ms. Boyle, we just need to be brave and get up and do our best- because we just might get a standing ovation.

Actually if what you say is true...then I guess you and your little insignificant column wouldn't really matter either? This is exactly what is wrong with our world today....we are too honest about saying things that are hurtful. As my mom always said....if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. The news media should try this for awhile! You go Susan Boyle!

95. Yahoo! Music User -
Same old crap, plastic wins, skill doesn't matter, look at Spears as a example. Susan has talent, what difference does looks matter, can she sing or not???

96. Judith -
Why does the "media' love to rain on people's parade? When did news mean only BAD news? Why are the media such mean spirited, hate mongering, fear inspiring whores? I and most of my friends and colleagues no longer watch the 24/7 news. I see that I am going to have to do the same with the internet news. Life doesnt have to be a downer people! Its meant to be enjoyed!

97. SusanL -
With her voice she could end up on Broadway. You are missing the point David - who said she wanted to be a 'pop' star?

98. smokey -
who said she needed to change the world? shut up and let her have her moment.

99. Petoskey -
Shame on you, Mr. Marchese! "And it's a lot easier to do that when the person doing the entertaining doesn't look like a crazy cat lady who lives next door." And what about you? Where do you fall in appearance-wise, following your opinion of how people should look? It doesn't matter! The woman has a gift - a beautiful singing voice - and people need to look beyond external appearances and appreciate what is there. After reading your column, I'm not too sure I like what you appear to exude via your lack of character.
