Why Susan Boyle Doesn’t Matter

Posted Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:53am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog
I finally broke down over the weekend and watched the Susan Boyle performance that everyone's been plotzing over. For those of you that don't know, Boyle is the, as my grandmother would generously say, "plain-looking" 47-year-old Scottish spinster whose lovely performance on April 11th of "I Dreamed A Dream" on Britain's Got Talent has turned her into an international sensation, garnering tens of millions of YouTube views and generating all manner of pontificating on the meaning of her popularity.

We're dealing with an ugly duckling tale. That's it. Susan Boyle is by conventional pop standards, unattractive, but sings like an angel, and her notoriety, as the thinking goes, is thus a heartwarming rebuke to an entertainment culture that far too often values looks rather than skill. If this episode sounds familiar, it's because it is--Britain's Got Talent spawned the exact same story two years ago when Paul Potts, a stocky cell-phone store manager, won the competition on the strength of his renditions of tenor arias like "Nessun Dorma." Your mother may have emailed you about him.

Of course, fairy tales are fiction. Potts' success did not result in a radical restructuring of show business norms (though his debut album, One Chance, did go double platinum in the U.K.)--extremely attractive entertainers are still more likely to get the good gigs. Susan Boyle's moment will have a similarly unremarkable effect. For all the back patting (see, we're not superficial!) her moment has allowed us to indulge in, the fact remains that popular entertainment is largely about helping us escape the mundane, whether it's for two hours or the length of a YouTube clip. And it's a lot easier to do that when the person doing the entertaining doesn't look like a crazy cat lady who lives next door. Right now Susan Boyle is an exception. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking she's going to be the rule.

The author of this "article" is bitter because he lacks the talent to get over a million hits in a few days on anything he has done or ever will do. So, to try to drag an achiever down to his level, he tries to call her irrelevant. Those who can DO, those who can't just criticize. Susan Boyle CAN!

Listen to Susan Boyle's deeply felt singing of "Cry Me A River" done years ago, in my view a performance distinctly superior to her newly sensational "I Dreamed A Dream." All other things being equal, It's less the singing than the calculated setting and the connived brouhaha that makes the difference.

Gotta read this.

only kind sweet people fell in love with susan boyle. she touches a cord deep inside good decent people. if you aren`t touched by her then you are not a good compassionate person. you are paid to be cynical and nasty. i don`t like you and people like you.

Ah the freedom of speech, its someone's opinion and that's all it is. Their Opinion! The woman can sing and you can't take that away from her. WHo knows what the future holds for her. Its her life and I'm sure she will do what she wants.

i think M.E.L. is an idiot. how could he possibly know what happened behind the scenes. people like you are the problem with society. go piss up a flag pole M.E.L.

Why are all you sentimental, bleeding-heart Boyle fans attacking Marchese for a fairly objective analysis of pop culture. Celebrity culture is superficial and glitzy because that is how we, the consumers, want it to be. If I hear "she sings like an angel" one more time I will...shrug my shoulders again.

Why David Marchese doesnt matter.... He works for a Music Mag as a Writer and it took him 2 weeks of breaking himself down to watch a stinking 5 minute pop culture video that has been talked widely about in his industry.

Nothing new here... Maybe he waited this long to cut and paste others reviews to form a opinion

I'm so hoping she becomes the norm. It would be nice to see a normal person get the dream. At least we know that it can in the UK.

Yes you are negative, but you are probably thinking about all the money she is going to make that you cannot.

Well Dave, like every other talentless hack writer for music industry publications--particualrly the ones like you who are so opinionated yet have nothing meaningful to say--you won't matter much either in the long run.

So take a good look at Ms. Boyle...you might as well be looking in a mirror, career-wise....

If you jerks want to advertise, why don't you pay for it and stay off free blogs. Maybe if you married a millionaire you wouldn't have to spend your day writing your millionnaire crap on all these blogs. Get a life, loser!

Was this article truly worth writing? Did it enlighten and uplift people? I don't think so. It seemed mean-spirited and uncaring. I'm not impressed.

I just wonder how many times you have been disappointed or your dreams unrealized...Dreams can come true and with every inch of my being I know she will be a success. She may not be Britain's #1 Idol...she doesn't need to be. She is a unique, lovely, talented woman who deserves this chance to totally shift her life around. She has paid her dues if you will. Success is not derived from Simon's approval....but doing that which you love...sharing it with the world and possibly making a living at it. Good luck, Susan, I can not wait till your CD comes out and the movie about your life.

I'm sorry...what qualifies you to be the judge? I've never left a comment before, but what you said is ridiculous!!! We should celebrate the "ugly duckling" stories in our culture. Perhaps it might just help us change the "norm". Our entertainment industry has been and will always be filled with VERY famous, EXTREMELY talented people whom you label as "not the rule"...Alice Cooper, Tiny Tim, Tom Petty, Rodney Dangerfield, Jason Mraz, Macy Gray, Billy Joel, Ray Charles, Elton John, and too many rap artists to even list! However, the fact remains that, while there are a LOTS shallow folks like you in this world...many of us respect the art and sheer talent exhibited by artists...regardless of how they look.

This is the second negative Susan Boyle article I've read in a week. For those who didn't see it (on the net) the first one was actually even MORE negative. Both of these authors seem to have a personal need to knock Ms. Boyle off her pedestal, temporary as it may be, and I've decided it's like when the new kid comes to school and makes a better impression than some who have been there for years. Maybe these two bloggers have been denied the public acclaim they seek, and are taking it out on her.

If people buy music based on what an artist looks like then they aren't interested in music at all, just fads. That is their perogative. But there are still some people left who love music for the music. I don't fawn (sp?) or dream over who is making the music, I just enjoy the music for what it is for that moment I am listening.
I could name a hundred or more ugly or plain musicians. By the way where is your pic? Should we ignore you based on how you look?

119. Cristine -
You couldn't be anymore wrong. Just because she's not britney spears or Beyonce on the outside, doesn't mean she doesn't have talent. It also doesn't mean she won't go anywhere. Her success is measured by the happiness it brings to her life.

120. cat c -
So that's your cogent analysis. Better not to have bothered to weigh in on the Boyle phenomenom. I could write your column better than you do.

Ditto to what Mike said. I hope that you don't actually get PAID?
