Why Susan Boyle Doesn’t Matter

Posted Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:53am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog
I finally broke down over the weekend and watched the Susan Boyle performance that everyone's been plotzing over. For those of you that don't know, Boyle is the, as my grandmother would generously say, "plain-looking" 47-year-old Scottish spinster whose lovely performance on April 11th of "I Dreamed A Dream" on Britain's Got Talent has turned her into an international sensation, garnering tens of millions of YouTube views and generating all manner of pontificating on the meaning of her popularity.

We're dealing with an ugly duckling tale. That's it. Susan Boyle is by conventional pop standards, unattractive, but sings like an angel, and her notoriety, as the thinking goes, is thus a heartwarming rebuke to an entertainment culture that far too often values looks rather than skill. If this episode sounds familiar, it's because it is--Britain's Got Talent spawned the exact same story two years ago when Paul Potts, a stocky cell-phone store manager, won the competition on the strength of his renditions of tenor arias like "Nessun Dorma." Your mother may have emailed you about him.

Of course, fairy tales are fiction. Potts' success did not result in a radical restructuring of show business norms (though his debut album, One Chance, did go double platinum in the U.K.)--extremely attractive entertainers are still more likely to get the good gigs. Susan Boyle's moment will have a similarly unremarkable effect. For all the back patting (see, we're not superficial!) her moment has allowed us to indulge in, the fact remains that popular entertainment is largely about helping us escape the mundane, whether it's for two hours or the length of a YouTube clip. And it's a lot easier to do that when the person doing the entertaining doesn't look like a crazy cat lady who lives next door. Right now Susan Boyle is an exception. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking she's going to be the rule.

u and people like you are what is wrong is this world.your a talentless hack who needs to take a look in the mirror and figure out who u are cause it sure isn't a writer

122. rajeev p -
she matters precisely because she is not attractive(physically). The juxtaposition makes her interesting. If she were hot and sang like that it would be not that big a deal.
You sound like person with cheap and superficial world view

Boyle kicks ass!! Who says every girl singer has to be 21 and cute?! She's 47 and cute!!! She's got an incredible voice!!! I want to see more of her!! I want to hear her performing until she's 102 years old!!! Susan Boyle is one of the best talents to come from the UK in years!! I'm so sick of crappy entertainers like Lily Allen! ps SPIN MAGAZINE BLOWS!

Very isolated opinion. She's awesome, if this would have been played on the radio it would have still got as huge a response. Where's your picture? It's easy to cast judgement without your picture being posted. Also, no matter what you write you will never have a fan base like susan boyle has. To become an overnight sensation and actually have a god gifted talent speaks for itself.

"cough" "cough" Barbara Streisand(no beauty queen either but manages quite well)

126. Carl H -
Susan Boyle may not be a raving beauty, but her demenor puts her far above all the beauty's that have nothing but their looks. Susan will be one of those voices that one hears and only wonder who is this person.

About Susan it was a TALENT NOT BEAUTY CONTEST...BUT....she does have a rather sloppy look that she could easily improve upon.
Step aside Susan ...that lil 10yr old HOLLIE gonna sing circles around you...NOW THERE IS A VOICE AT ONLY TEN YEARS OLD

This article is pretty useless, even when you stop and consider that it appears on the Yahoo homepage. I really don't understand why the entire Western hemisphere has to publish its opinion on Boyle. Yeah, she's ugly. But she seems genuine, a trait that has grown somewhat unusual in our world, and she has a gorgeous voice. Can't we just let her get a recording deal, deservedly make some money, and leave it at that?

Did Simon Cowel write this?

Unless M.E.L. is a member of the staff that produces BGT, and has inside knowledge of what actually went on backstage with Susan Boyle, then M.E.L. is the I D I O T.

Wellllllllll, Sparky, you keep Beyonce; I'd rather listen to Susan!

132. Michael N -
Don't forget Lyle Lovette, David Johanson, and Iggy Pop.

its so typical to judge one by their appearance. but i dare you to go on stage infront of thousands of people and sing, act, dance etc. from what u have written you are easy to judge. but have you ever put yourself in her shoes. i bet you look in the mirror and really dislike what you see too. u probably hate her cause she is doing something you couldnt even dream of. just remember what comes around goes around

She may be rough on the eyes but she's easy on the ears. Very easy on the ears. She has a future in music if she wants one, and even though we're not going to see her on VH1 or MTV, we can easily hear her singing on movie soundtracks or on stage somewhere. I think the problem is actually that David Marchese doesn't have a tenth the talent that Susan or even the rejected singers have, and he's taking out on her looks.
Pathetic little punk.

Her voice will definitely wind up on Broadway.

Does anyone remember when the likes of Sophie Tucker were well-loved entertainers? And Dotie Fields?

137. matt -
why do you have to hate? are you that jealous?

138. George -
Don,t you think we have enough downers in todays world without you wrighting crap like this, grow up

139. SandyC -
How much uglier could you get than Barbra Streisand? That didn't stop her.

If a person with mediocre looks cannot come up in life, David (the author of this ludicruous article) I have got news for you....she will succeed. She has nothing to lose. She has not tasted success until now. All she has shown the world is that talent exists and you do not have to look like a Supermodel for that. Go tell about your theory to the major Heavymetal rock bands or this day's Rap/HipHop stars. They sure look very elegant, clean and great looking....and with great voice....lol.

Plainly put ....I think you are stupid and do not deserve to write.
