Why Susan Boyle Doesn’t Matter

Posted Mon Apr 27, 2009 11:53am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog
I finally broke down over the weekend and watched the Susan Boyle performance that everyone's been plotzing over. For those of you that don't know, Boyle is the, as my grandmother would generously say, "plain-looking" 47-year-old Scottish spinster whose lovely performance on April 11th of "I Dreamed A Dream" on Britain's Got Talent has turned her into an international sensation, garnering tens of millions of YouTube views and generating all manner of pontificating on the meaning of her popularity.

We're dealing with an ugly duckling tale. That's it. Susan Boyle is by conventional pop standards, unattractive, but sings like an angel, and her notoriety, as the thinking goes, is thus a heartwarming rebuke to an entertainment culture that far too often values looks rather than skill. If this episode sounds familiar, it's because it is--Britain's Got Talent spawned the exact same story two years ago when Paul Potts, a stocky cell-phone store manager, won the competition on the strength of his renditions of tenor arias like "Nessun Dorma." Your mother may have emailed you about him.

Of course, fairy tales are fiction. Potts' success did not result in a radical restructuring of show business norms (though his debut album, One Chance, did go double platinum in the U.K.)--extremely attractive entertainers are still more likely to get the good gigs. Susan Boyle's moment will have a similarly unremarkable effect. For all the back patting (see, we're not superficial!) her moment has allowed us to indulge in, the fact remains that popular entertainment is largely about helping us escape the mundane, whether it's for two hours or the length of a YouTube clip. And it's a lot easier to do that when the person doing the entertaining doesn't look like a crazy cat lady who lives next door. Right now Susan Boyle is an exception. Let's not fool ourselves into thinking she's going to be the rule.

What an idiotic thing to write. Speak for your self David, I would buy her CD's. Hearing her voice makes me very happy. She is not performing in a strip club, or competing in a Miss Universe contest, she is singing. Go back to reading your nudie magazines, you are not very good at writing anything of worth.

142. Michelle -
I agree with everyone who has commented that this tacky, untimely article is irrelavent.

143. Charles -
The person who wrote this is a fool. I would debate you publicly any day. The history of performers has been filled with odd, unusual, even ugly stars. Both male and female. The public will chose who they like and are willing to pay money to hear and see.

Do you really believe little kids are more "bankable" than Susan Boyle? Go look at Paul Potts income so far. Compare it to most Idol winners!!!!

Paul McCartney has spoken out saying he is a fan. Elaine Paige, remember her? She has offered to record a duet with Boyle. One of the worlds most succesful songwriters has suggested a famous song of his be adapted on Susans first album to be done with Paul Potts singing it with her.

If I were Paul McCartney I would recreate the simplistic style of his first recording of "YESTERDAY". I would play an acoustic guitar to a tender and emotional performance of Susan singing the single most important pop song ever written. (go check that out if you don't agree about Yesterday)

That union, Boyle & McCartney would produce a worldwide #1 mega radio hit single. Maybe even a Grammy.

LOL - what a dolt. He needs to open his eyes and look at all of the amazing variety in successful artists. And if he were my son I would set him done for a strong lecture about arrogance and civil respect.

What really made the news was the ignorance of the judges when they thought Susan Boyle could not sing just because of the way she looked - much in the same way you think she doesn't matter because of the way she looks. I pity you. There are many entertainers out there, very successful ones, who are no prize when it comes to looks OR personality.

145. Yahoo! Music User -
Well Freddie Mecury could be quite scary looking sometimes and he absolutely had the voice of an angel.

146. mifd -
how do i "report abuse" by the illiterate author of this article. i have seen more coherent & sensible rantings from the yahoo message board trolls.

147. Ally -
David Marchese needs to go out and get a real life, instead of picking apart the lives of others. Can you spell b-i-t-t-e-r?

148. Robert -
I thought the name of the show was "Britains Got Talent"
Beauty is an attribute yes but not a talent.
The mundane pop symphony in the key of C is not much talent either.Nor is the tolm of crap you people at spin spew about.
I've never seen such fop BS played off as writing.
Note to the editor:You can get better talent off the street.

149. SoCharm -
We ALL matter. What a terrible thing to say about anyone. What if you are in a car wreck and your face is totally messed up or you lose your sight.....do you think YOU still matter? Your blog indicates differently. How very sad for you.

150. SC -
What a sad article..true though it may be for the shallow and small minded!! It just shows how superficial and ignorant the world has become that it would even be written. Fame is not something that should be given because of how someone looks but what they offer the world, whether it be a beautiful voice, a musical composition, radical thought or contributions to math or science!! This need to be famous because of how you look is so arbitrary and idiotic!! Most of the "good looking" people in the world look that way because of genes or much plastic surgery. How is that a contribution to society??? It is not! Yes you are right, I am not a beauty by the sad standards of modern society...but I am beautiful on the inside and that is more than you see on any reality show where the outside fits your's or the world's standard of beauty, and the show itself enables you to see how ugly they really are inside. So keep your superficial beauty that fades with age, I and others like me will be beautiful long after yours fades because it is who we are, not how we look!! Go Susan Boyle and know you are beautiful to those of us who know true beauty!! Good luck and God bless you!!

151. DianeE -
quit being so rude and negative, this is her moment of fame. She has a beautiful voice and should be recognized. The world now knows we should not judge a book by its cover. so just lighten up, will you...

152. Yahoo! Music User -
I think they'll both do well, and Paul Potts is freakin' amazing! Janis Joplin was no beauty, just for one example.

153. chryssy -
the reason things do not CHANGE is because people like you DON'T want them to. u don't any point other than it's our fault... WE AS A PEOPLE HAVE ACCEPTED HER... PERIOD. "journalist" like yourself are more to blame. why couldn't you have "written" a POSITIVE "article" on her. u should be ASHAMED of yourself... yet, i DOUBT you have the INTEGRITY be so.

154. charles -
You are totally wrong...and jealous, Susan Boyle is an unemployed woman about to become wealthy. She wont have to rent the modest home she lives in anymore and she will
tour many countries picking up fat checks as she goes along
I wish her the very best.

155. HeatherB -
Well look at Madonna she is not very pretty and she can't sing. Ms. Boyle would go far on Broadway and who knows maybe people are not as superficial as you might think.

156. Amy B -
What a sourpuss you are!Noone made you watch it so go suck on a lemon!!

157. jamie -
Susan Boyle and Paul Potts DO matter. Every little bit helps, especially to the WOMEN of the world. Men get all the breaks when it comes to physical appearance and showbiz. And you know what? It doesn't matter if she wins or not, I'm sure she's already got a record contract waiting in the wings. Millions of people cannot be wrong: If she means a lot to them and nothing to you, fine. But please do not tell me that that she does not matter to me:

158. teresa -
She doens't care about being the rule. She only wants to sing. And she does it very well.
Shame on you . If she doesn't matter why you are so concerned about her???
grown up.

159. J -
Your panties must be in a wad.

160. David -
If David Marchese's column's were only half as good as Susan Boyle voice and the way she sings, David wouldn't be writing for SPIN he would be on the best sellers list and financially secure.
