Who Cares About Creed’s Comeback?

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:10am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

Last week, after six years of inactivity, Creed announced on Creed.com that original vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Weatherall, and drummer Scott Phillips have reunited for a tour that kicks off August 6 in Pittsburgh. Like me, you may be wondering, does anyone care?

I'm not the best judge. Strictly in terms of record sales, I assume the answer is yes. The band was easily one of the most popular of the late '90s and early '00s. Six million copies sold of the debut, 1997's My Own Prison, 11 million of Human Clay, released two years later, and another six million of 2001's Weathered. That's not just success, that's success at a level we rarely see anymore.

Despite their mass appeal, I've always been skeptical about Creed. Why? When they came up, they were pegged as a Christian rock band (a tag Stapp's frequent Christ-on-the-cross posing did little to discourage). Unfairly or not, the idea of the band as proselytizers put me off. But more importantly, I thought the music was unremarkable--plodding Muscle-bound reworking of Pearl Jam, with all of that older band's warmth and psychological intensity replaced by chest-beating bravado and blandly messianic lyrics. Sure, hit power ballads "Higher," "With Arms Wide Open," and "My Sacrifice" were admirable in their blustery way--the band had no shortage of strong vocal melodies and big guitar hooks--but there was nothing in the band's music to suggest they would ever transcend their influences. Simply put, Creed was not my bag.

Whose bag is it now? Nickelback fans? Chad Kroeger's band certainly has affinities with Creed in its knack for marrying not-too-heavy metal riffs with pop melodies, but they never go for the larger-than-life heroism to which Stapp always aspired. Kid Rock? The rock 'n' roll Jesus sounds just as good as Creed coming from the stereo of a pickup truck, but he's way more of an unencumbered good time, and far more self-aware, than our returning prodigal sons. Really, there doesn't seem to be anyone else like Creed out there right now. Which means there's either a niche that needs filling--or that we've all moved on.

Which do you think it is?

Number 23, don't hold back now! Why don't you tell us how you really feel? It's not good to keep things bottled up inside!

I think that's great, but I really don't like it when bands like this are so selfish with their own needs, I think once you decide to live out your dreams and become in the public eye..that you shouldn't give up and quit for what ever reason. Cause there are so many other people out there that would love to have had that chance of a life time. Being in a major band to me IS a life long commitment. Sure take time off for yourself, but dont quit your FANS!

"Can you take me Higher?"... I don't think so.

I have to say that if they scrap Alter Bridge for Stapp, they truely are brain-dead. Alter Bridge is 1000% better in everyway than Creed ever was - popular or not. Myles Kennedy is better in everyway and he isn't a douche.

I love creed! I can't wait to see what they come up with their 2nd time around =] ♥

I think the blogger may have more relevance if he got the bassist's name right. Marshal, not Weatherall. Unless it's not the original lineup as he suggests.

Stapp's ego and need to stroke it is what did Creed as a unit in. Alterbridge was relatively successful on their own and without Stapp's baggage. I think Tremonti, Phillips and Marshall are out of their mind's to put up with him and try this again. Although - I did like the stuff they put out as Creed. Hopefully there will be new material that will change my mind - but Alterbridge is better off without Stapp.

I'm beginning to think that no one here has actually heard any "music" from Creed. For the clueless - they are a rip-off of Pearl Jam, and a bad one at that. Being a musician - we are
qualified to "critique" bands and music and most agree with me. Case in point: I have 4 friends (non-musicians) who thought that Creed was Pearl Jam until Weathered came out. It took a whole lot of convincing.

Let see I just looked at Billboards top artists; Miley Cyrus;Judakiss, Rascal Flatts, Lady GaGa.
Creed picked the right time to comeback. They are surely missed. Sure beats the crap out of what is out nowdays.

I CARE!!! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Creed! I'm actually listening to them right now as I read this peice of crap. Just because YOU don't like them doesn't mean that you should downgrade them. Go paint a picture && leave them alone.

Now, I do like some of Alter Bridge's music. But, that Creed nonsense does nothing for me. It is just too generic, unoriginal, and cliche. If you like them, more power to you. I am sure there are some bands that we both like. I am not the almighty music authority from hell....and neither is anyone else.

look i met Brian one night in a pub at our home town. and have followed creed and alterbridge. And with the exception of stapp they are some hard workin dudes with immense talant i a hope for the best.

I really enjoyed Creed. Pearl Jam mirrors or not, they had a good sound and a good vibe. Most guys in high school I knew, if they could play a guitar, they usually played at least one Creed song. Don't know that they need to necessarily tour again before they find out whether they have a strong enough appeal, but hey, to each their own.

oh my god!!!! no!!!!!!! that means alter bridge is dead. alter bridge was far more amazing then creed. miles kennedy is a much better vocalist than scott stapp, and at least he isnt a drunk idiot.

I LOVE Creed and I LOVE their Christian message!
I'm really glad they are getting back together. It's about time.
