Who Cares About Creed’s Comeback?

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:10am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

Last week, after six years of inactivity, Creed announced on Creed.com that original vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Weatherall, and drummer Scott Phillips have reunited for a tour that kicks off August 6 in Pittsburgh. Like me, you may be wondering, does anyone care?

I'm not the best judge. Strictly in terms of record sales, I assume the answer is yes. The band was easily one of the most popular of the late '90s and early '00s. Six million copies sold of the debut, 1997's My Own Prison, 11 million of Human Clay, released two years later, and another six million of 2001's Weathered. That's not just success, that's success at a level we rarely see anymore.

Despite their mass appeal, I've always been skeptical about Creed. Why? When they came up, they were pegged as a Christian rock band (a tag Stapp's frequent Christ-on-the-cross posing did little to discourage). Unfairly or not, the idea of the band as proselytizers put me off. But more importantly, I thought the music was unremarkable--plodding Muscle-bound reworking of Pearl Jam, with all of that older band's warmth and psychological intensity replaced by chest-beating bravado and blandly messianic lyrics. Sure, hit power ballads "Higher," "With Arms Wide Open," and "My Sacrifice" were admirable in their blustery way--the band had no shortage of strong vocal melodies and big guitar hooks--but there was nothing in the band's music to suggest they would ever transcend their influences. Simply put, Creed was not my bag.

Whose bag is it now? Nickelback fans? Chad Kroeger's band certainly has affinities with Creed in its knack for marrying not-too-heavy metal riffs with pop melodies, but they never go for the larger-than-life heroism to which Stapp always aspired. Kid Rock? The rock 'n' roll Jesus sounds just as good as Creed coming from the stereo of a pickup truck, but he's way more of an unencumbered good time, and far more self-aware, than our returning prodigal sons. Really, there doesn't seem to be anyone else like Creed out there right now. Which means there's either a niche that needs filling--or that we've all moved on.

Which do you think it is?

WTF! WHY? yes they were good when they first came out, and then scott stapp started laying down on stage acting like a phony jim morrison and claiming creed is better than zeppelin, zeppelin! do the music community a favor and stay buried away in the "sell your cd's for money" stores.

i care, creed are one of the main influences of my new band, alongside nickelback, so of course i care, there songs are awesome, and as a fan, im gonna say i care. nickelback are having success this time, so why shouldnt creed, and to all those people who dislike creed, keep listening to the music you like and dont give opinions on bands that you dont like, cos all it makes me think is that your the one who look silly....and to all the creed fans......IM WITH YOU

I absolutely love Creed! They had a lot of meaning behind their music and it may have been a little on the religious side, but really,....whats wrong with that. There is no religion any where else anymore! Geese Louise! Lets not harp on their come back before we even see what they are gonna do! If its anything similar to their previous work, I will be at their concert in the front row when they come to our town.

yea! i love creed! i dont get why people are always so pissed about creed coming back. if you hate them that much....who cares, just leave it to yourself. it doesn't matter if you love or hate them. its just someones own personal taste in music. its not like it affects yours.

Where does this leave Alter Bridge? And stay off the road in your town if Scott's driving. I know, that was wrong....

YES! Creed reunited is awesome. Alter Bridge kicks butt too but I am psyched to see the ban back together. Still one of the best live shows I ever went to. Rock on! Pearl Jam is o.k. but Creed is better.........

Sure everyone hates on Creed now, but back then everyone owned at least one of their albums. It funny how critics like this idiot make remarks about their hits but never comment on the albums as a whole, and at the same time love the crap that has come out over the last 2 or 3 years. Mark Tremonti is a musical Genious anyone who has studied his style and knows anything about playing guitar knows this. Weathered was the best orchastrated rock album of the Ninties and since. Alterbridge was just as good, they just never had the proper backing. Band comebacks almost never work out but, I'm excited non the less.

I LOVE CREED! I've been waiting for them to come back! I don't really see the point in people saying they don't care though...If you don't care, then don't waste your time commenting about them, just don't listen to the music!

CREED IS AWESOME

AP
Mon Dec 7, 2009 6:44am PST

AP - As far as one-hit wonders go, Daniel Powter is king of them all — for this decade, at least. Powter, whose hit "Bad Day" reigned on top of the Billboard pop charts for five weeks in 2006, was named as the de… More »
