Who Cares About Creed’s Comeback?

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:10am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

Last week, after six years of inactivity, Creed announced on Creed.com that original vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Weatherall, and drummer Scott Phillips have reunited for a tour that kicks off August 6 in Pittsburgh. Like me, you may be wondering, does anyone care?

I'm not the best judge. Strictly in terms of record sales, I assume the answer is yes. The band was easily one of the most popular of the late '90s and early '00s. Six million copies sold of the debut, 1997's My Own Prison, 11 million of Human Clay, released two years later, and another six million of 2001's Weathered. That's not just success, that's success at a level we rarely see anymore.

Despite their mass appeal, I've always been skeptical about Creed. Why? When they came up, they were pegged as a Christian rock band (a tag Stapp's frequent Christ-on-the-cross posing did little to discourage). Unfairly or not, the idea of the band as proselytizers put me off. But more importantly, I thought the music was unremarkable--plodding Muscle-bound reworking of Pearl Jam, with all of that older band's warmth and psychological intensity replaced by chest-beating bravado and blandly messianic lyrics. Sure, hit power ballads "Higher," "With Arms Wide Open," and "My Sacrifice" were admirable in their blustery way--the band had no shortage of strong vocal melodies and big guitar hooks--but there was nothing in the band's music to suggest they would ever transcend their influences. Simply put, Creed was not my bag.

Whose bag is it now? Nickelback fans? Chad Kroeger's band certainly has affinities with Creed in its knack for marrying not-too-heavy metal riffs with pop melodies, but they never go for the larger-than-life heroism to which Stapp always aspired. Kid Rock? The rock 'n' roll Jesus sounds just as good as Creed coming from the stereo of a pickup truck, but he's way more of an unencumbered good time, and far more self-aware, than our returning prodigal sons. Really, there doesn't seem to be anyone else like Creed out there right now. Which means there's either a niche that needs filling--or that we've all moved on.

Which do you think it is?

I am so happy that they are doing a comeback----I have always loved their music, and yes, it does have a Christian flair to it, but right now in these turbulent times, I'm glad to see them doing it again---rock on guys!

Creed is one of those bands that is just so great that you would just love to kick Scott Stapp in the ass for being a dick with leaving the rest of the band. But overall; Creed. They are a great band, and I am excited to say that this is my chance to see them live. CREED ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

I really liked Creed. So I care. They had talent, not just noise promoting junk, like many other rockers.

I love Creed and I do hope they have a good turn out a second time around. I enjoy hearing their music and find it inspiring. Can't wait for them to come town.

Alter Bridge is not breaking up for this. Mark Tremonti said that this reunion is not going to effect the work of alter bridge and that Alter Bridge is the main priority but im guessing if this album and tour is a huge success that all might change.

Although, I was a huge fan, the new music would have to prove that they are as good as they were before.

All we can do is wait and see - but, if they are, I am sure that I will continue as a fan.

hacks....

HAHAHA I love how everyone loves to bash Creed now. They sold over 46 million records worldwide and roughly 20 million in the U.S. Unarguable numbers. I also love how people can talk bad about bands who were/are clearly on top of the world with tickets, albums and popularity. Such a shame that everyone has to now deny what they always loved. Kind of like you refusing to admit you cared for a boy band when you ocassionally found yourself humming or singing the lyrics under your breath so OMGOSH nobody can know that I somewhat like them.

75. Dylan H -
Can't wait to take my boys to see them. Took them to Disturbed and AC/DC and they arer excited about seeing Creed.

76. Stephen -
oh my god, no. This should not happen. Scott Stapp shreds!

77. John -
I look forward to it..... plus Myles (Alter Bride Vocalist) will be dropping, and then in the fall after the whole creed thing is over, Alter Bridge will be coming out with a new one..... I think it is great, and it's like having the best of both worlds

Why in the H3ll would Mark, or any of them, even think about reuniting with Stapp? O-M-G! They finally had something when they obtained the amazing Miles Kennedy and put Alterbridge together. Miles is a GOD! I'm scratching my head in wonderment. I can't believe it. Nuke Miles Kennedy for that lack-o-talent Stapp. Ummmmm..... I got nothin.

79. JonathanM -
I do have to say I'm excited with the reunion. Creed was a great band. It's too bad Stapp turned out the way he did. He's an awesome musician, he's just.....crazy. That's really the only way to put it. But Creed as a band were one of the best bands of the nineties, and it's nice to see that they can pull it together long enough to give their fans want they wnat.

Who cares!!?? Obviously every single one of you who took the time to leave a comment about this sucky band. Creed is one of the greatest bands in rock history. These guys actually make music from their heart not from some stupid computer. Every time I turn on the radio I hear the same crap everyday that you people call music. Creed and Seether is two bands that make music from their heart and their mind. If you don't like who cares? Don't listen to them. But every single one of you people who has left a message on here will be listening and buying their cd at one point or another.
