Who Cares About Creed’s Comeback?

Posted Mon May 4, 2009 11:10am PDT by David Marchese in The Spin Blog

Last week, after six years of inactivity, Creed announced on Creed.com that original vocalist Scott Stapp, guitarist Mark Tremonti, bassist Brian Weatherall, and drummer Scott Phillips have reunited for a tour that kicks off August 6 in Pittsburgh. Like me, you may be wondering, does anyone care?

I'm not the best judge. Strictly in terms of record sales, I assume the answer is yes. The band was easily one of the most popular of the late '90s and early '00s. Six million copies sold of the debut, 1997's My Own Prison, 11 million of Human Clay, released two years later, and another six million of 2001's Weathered. That's not just success, that's success at a level we rarely see anymore.

Despite their mass appeal, I've always been skeptical about Creed. Why? When they came up, they were pegged as a Christian rock band (a tag Stapp's frequent Christ-on-the-cross posing did little to discourage). Unfairly or not, the idea of the band as proselytizers put me off. But more importantly, I thought the music was unremarkable--plodding Muscle-bound reworking of Pearl Jam, with all of that older band's warmth and psychological intensity replaced by chest-beating bravado and blandly messianic lyrics. Sure, hit power ballads "Higher," "With Arms Wide Open," and "My Sacrifice" were admirable in their blustery way--the band had no shortage of strong vocal melodies and big guitar hooks--but there was nothing in the band's music to suggest they would ever transcend their influences. Simply put, Creed was not my bag.

Whose bag is it now? Nickelback fans? Chad Kroeger's band certainly has affinities with Creed in its knack for marrying not-too-heavy metal riffs with pop melodies, but they never go for the larger-than-life heroism to which Stapp always aspired. Kid Rock? The rock 'n' roll Jesus sounds just as good as Creed coming from the stereo of a pickup truck, but he's way more of an unencumbered good time, and far more self-aware, than our returning prodigal sons. Really, there doesn't seem to be anyone else like Creed out there right now. Which means there's either a niche that needs filling--or that we've all moved on.

Which do you think it is?

Exactly what I thought about Creed: Over blown and pompous Pearl Jam ripoff.

SCOTT STAPP HAS ALWAYS BEEN AND STILL IS A POOR MAN'S EDDIE VEDDER

Great article! I really agree on this one.

What a surprise, the liberal music media (Spin Magazine no less) did not like Creed because they had Christian lyrics in their music. Gee, who would have guessed that (notice the sarcasim)!! The writer of this article is a typical pathetic liberal.

"there doesn't seem to be anyone else like Creed out there right now" - well okay, that's good. What I love about Creed is that they put their hearts and souls, their entire beings into their music, and it rocks pretty hard. If you hate Creed it's probably because you can't recognize talent when you hear it.

I care, I'm happy that they're back together, cant wait for the new album. Creed was the first rock band that made me listen to rock. I liked almost all of their albums. If you guys don't their music or Scott Stapp even, it doesn't mean everybody stop listens to them, no need to downgrade them. Don't know why there's such haters.

I think Creed is a great band and anyone with any appreciation for music that brings about a small awareness of humanity and compassion would agree. Listen to the lyrics and you will understand what their music holds. Rock on!!

I'm pissed that the author of this story put Kid Rock in the same paragraph with Creed and Nickelback. WTF! In the end, no one cares Creed, invest your comeback tour earnings wisely. You'll have to live on it...

91. Prognow -
I will take Creed any day over Nickelback im shocked and glad they are back together now.

Puhleez! If you can't tell the difference between Pearl Jam and Creed then you shouldn't call yourself a musician. I like Creed AND Pearl Jam. Sounds like their record sales speak for themselves, people weren't thinking that they were buying Pearl Jam when they forked out their cash.

It IS the original lineup. I think that Creed had something really good going at first. They were one of my favorite bands. Towards the end, things got rocky. I'll definitely give them a chance. I'm SO sick of listening to the crap out today... Saving Abel, Hellyeah, Papa Roach, it all sucks. Ridiculous lyrics and vocals paired with mediocre music. Ick.

94. silly -
Creed reminds me of putting alcohol and vinegar in a enema and inserting.

95. doobs -
No one with a brain and a functional pair of ears would care.. They sucked hard the first time around. At least there should be more laughs, once the make another attempt though.

96. BrandonV -
Nobody cares they're just another third rate wannabe rock band. Music has been dead for years, Creed came along when every other band was doing the same thing, and put out the same old tired music. Just cause it's on the radio, and sell records doesn't make it good. They can make you sound good during the recording process, auto tune anyone? This is the reason why so many new "artists" come around each year, they take a group willing to sellout and change their sound to fit in with everyone else just to make some money until the new trend comes around. Music has no balls anymore, look in the underground if you want real music with real musicians, and actual talent. At least they're not afraid to speak their minds, or put out albums on their own.

I care very deeply that Creed is reuniting. I had hoped I'd never have to listen to that godawful dreck again--hopefully by now America has better taste in music. Oh, right...Britney, Jessica, Usher, Jamie Foxx...is this the day that music died?
If Scott Stapp really wanted to glorify God he'd take a vow of silence.

Who CARES!! Their first album was awesome... then like a lot of decent bands, popular demand and record sales gets a hold of them and turns them into weak bands. Staind, for example. Awesome first album...then everyone figures our Aaron has a good voice...now...we have nothing but gay ballads.

99. Double Down -
Even Jesus hates Creed.

100. Jake -
Please..... they will fizzle out just like they did before.
