Kiss 2009: Forward--Into The Past!

Posted Thu Dec 11, 2008 3:48pm PST by Billy Altman in Stop The Presses!

Maybe it was seeing AC/DC on the cover of Rolling Stone a few weeks ago. Or, more to the point, maybe it was the very thought that Angus Young, still prancing around in his knickers and beanie at age 57, could lead his merry mates to the top of the charts with a new CD. All I know is it doesn't seem mere coincidence that, having not released a studio album since 1998's Psycho Circus, Kiss has just let word leak out that that they're getting ready to record again.

In a recent interview with askmen.com, Paul Stanley divulged that he and Kiss co-founder Gene Simmons, along with current Kiss-ees guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, will soon begin work on a collection of new material."It's going to be very much a vintage, classic '70s Kiss album," Stanley promises, "without much regard to what's happened since then; it's back to the roots." Presumably, Stanley is talking solely in musical terms, which means we shouldn't be expecting Gene Simmons to suddenly quit dyeing his hair, or undoing his facelift. But, hey, if AC/DC can successfully pull off the everything-old-is-new-again trick, why can't Kiss, who just about wrote the (painted face) book on the subject of musical regurgitation even before Angus got fitted for his first pair of kneepants?

In the askmen.com article, (by the way, this website has an advice column written by one "Doc Love," which, as any loyal Kiss Army foot soldier can tell you, may well stem from the old Simmons classic "Calling Doctor Love"), Stanley is asked why, unlike some of their predecessors, Thayer and Singer wear the same makeup as original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss.

Here's what he says: The idea that we should dilute the four icons, which are world-known (not by name, but by character) and come up with like "Frog Man" or "Turtle Boy" was a big misstep. Those iconic figures are known worldwide; you show anybody in the world a photo of KISS and they’ll tell you it’s KISS. So, it just sold everybody short to think that when somebody left the band that they should take those characters with them."

I guess that means that if Paul and Gene ever decide to hang it up, they can hire replacement players to go out in their makeup and keep recycling the riffs they've been recycling all the way to the bank for 35 (count 'em) years now.

In the meantime, we leave you with this wonderful tidbit from the Stanley interview.

Q: "What's the one quality you think all men should have?"
A: Integrity.

You gotta love it.

Angus Young is not 57 ~ he's 52...and he's still damn good at what he does!!! And Billy, I think you need to check your math and your information source. AC/DC and Kiss were both formed in '73. So your comment about Kiss writing the book on musical regurgitation before Angus was fitted for knee pants doesn't hold water and is just plain stupid! Oh and I read somewhere recently that the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality applies to AC/DC ~ if record sales and the lack of being able to get your hands on a ticket for the "Black Ice" tour is any indication they didn't need to "fix" anything.

KISS ROCKS - they are still the hottest band in the world - nuff said!

Kiss sucks

Billy here, obviously has a little something against Kiss. Yeah, they've redefined "sellout", but they've got a few more hit records than you, Billy, and I'm certain that a new album (do they say "album" anymore?) from Kiss will be a huge success. Trust me - the thought of seeing Gene Simmons prancing around in makeup and spandex turns my stomach, but Kiss is a machine and the batteries won't be going dead any time soon.

Wow, I didn't expect to see AC/DC on here, they are my fave band and ever since my dad got an account and practically gave it to me, I have been looking for something on Yahoo w/ AC/DC on it and now I finally found it. And Angus isn't 57, he's 53, none of the members are 57, Brian is 61 Malcolm is 55, Cliff is 58, and Phil is 54. Maybe it got confused with some KISS members, Idk though I don't listen to KISS enough to really know.

When did Gene Simmons ever "PRANCE" - he barely moves at all. Just stalks the stage - poses and spits stuff out.

Kiss ROCKS though.

And AC/DC too. Seeing them in January!!!

kiss_fan_76. You must not know the real history of KISS. Paul and Gene are Kiss they started the band and then Added Peter and Ace. All Logo's that make up Kiss and the Soul property of Paul and Gene and can be used by whomever they decide. Peter and Ace were in the original group but when both were fired the rights to the Logo's and makeup belong to Paul and Gene. And for all who say that Kiss sucks, well as I think Gene would say..Yes we do...."All the way to the bank"

I'm a diehard Kiss fan and have been since I was a young girl. Personally, I think Gene & Paul listened to the new 1977 cd and got inspired to write some new "vintage" music. If you've never heard 1977, you should check them out at www.1977theband.com. The 1977 cd sounds exactly like vintage Kiss music from the 70's. I think someone brought it to Gene's attention and he figures that they should be the ones writing vintage Kiss music.

Well...1977 beat them to the punch. If you feel like hearing some new music you've never heard before, but that sounds like Kiss from the 70's, then by all means check out the band 1977. They are awesome!

in reply to kcpatsfan92: Maybe you need to dour homework. Gene & Paul did start KISS, but with every band you have to find the right members to complete the band with that said the original KISS members are Gene, Ace, Peter & Paul. As far as the make-up designs and characters go, each member came up with their own design and they own that design. Everytime Tommy Thayer puts that make-up & costume on Ace gets paid, but Ace cannot wear it and perform because of the contract he has with "the band KISS" as far as the logo goes Ace designed the KISS logo with the lighting bolt s's. Ace doesen't want to be in KISS anymore he did the farewell tour and said goodbye to the fans besides isint that what a farewell is. Gene & Paul decided to carry on and be a tribute to themselves. I'm not saying anything bad because I'm a die hard KISS fan, have been for many years. I just think if they are gonna wear the make-up it should be the original 4 who are 1!!

You know I have to agree with Paul in all aspects of the whole conversation. He is right about the makeup aspect. If Ace and Peter left the band then who is to say that KISS has to dissolve the characters that it's founding members Gene and Paul himself created. Those are copyrighted characters were created by some very smart businessmen. KISS can't help it if people have left the band that's their fault.

KISS IS THE BEST ROCK BAND 4 EVER SAW EM 14 TIMES AND HAVE 2 TATTS, KEEP THE ROCK ROLLING.

19. Darrell -
Well it's about damn time they hold up to there current contract. besides I would rather see KISS the ACDC as good as they are they just miss that one thing that a true rock band has. Few bands have lasted as long, or still have millions of fans like kiss does. Makeup no makeup they have set the standerd for many bands in the last 20 years. no one is loader or gives you a real show like KISS. the only other band that sounds as good live as KISS is Journey, which also has been around for a good 30 years now. when it come to live LOAD in your face rock N roll you can count on KISS...

20. Robert A -
Kiss has been around for a long time And yes they ROCK

AP - Imagine this: By day you're a typical businessman, working the 9 to 5. Your nights and weekends, however, are spent sharing a stage with nine other guys just like you — performing a cappella songs in small ven… More »
