Prisoners Of Love: The New Michael Jackson Tribute

Posted Sat Jun 27, 2009 3:41pm PDT by Billy Altman in Stop The Presses!

Talk about deja view all over again.

Earlier today, the 1,500 orange-jumpsuit-clad inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention & Rehabilitation Center on the east coast of Cebu Island in the Philippines reprised their phenomenally popular 2007 viral performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to honor the King Of Pop, who died Thursday. After that, they performed this touching new tribute:

The original four-minute Web-smash video, you may recall, stemmed from an experimental program started by local security consultant Byron Garcia, which added synchronized dancing to the prison's exercise programs in the hopes of spurring better attendance and more involved participation. And judging by the results, it was certainly a success, as Garcia's post of the convicts' conga lines cavorting a la Jackson and his legion of undulating undead became an immediate phenomenon, drawing over 24 million hits--a million of them in the 24-hour period following the news of Jackson's death.

Of course, "hit" would seem to be an especially appropriate word when discussing criminals--though judging from the, er,  résumés of many of the thespic inmates at Cebu prison, drug-related offenses do seems to be up there in shared "credits."

Were these guys and gals troupers? After getting the OK to proceed with the tribute performance, the 1,500 guys and gals of the Cebu company practiced virtually around the clock under the watchful eyes of not only their built-in audience of armed prison guards but also a professional choreographer hired by the prison to whip the company into "Thriller"-appropriate lurching shape.

And bless their paying-their-debts-to-society heads, the Cebu inmates have once again done their warden, the country, and, yes, the entire planet proud. As Michael Jackson, the fallen idol whose music helped these unlikely people gain international recognition, once noted, it doesn't matter if you're black or white, or living as a free person in society or inside a detention and rehab center in the Philippines. We're all people--and we are the world.

It wasn't shown on TV or in the headlines over the internet because the world prefers to watch this deceased pedophile instead!

I can't believe you people worshipped this guy like a God.

Really.... its all comes down to respect. Ok... you don't like something/someone... then ignore it and go about your own life.

That is exactly what is wrong with people today... they can't just be civil and live in peace... they always have to have hatred towards something and bring others down.

Respect people... if you didn't like him then why did you read/watch this article/video. Next time just keep your mouth shut and dont rain on other people's parade!

No one will ever live up to Micheal Jacksons talents. Yes he was strange, but his talents exceeded his strangeness.I was set to travel from Texas to London to see him in concert in September.I am truly devastated that he is gone.I think he was surrounded by people who took advantage of his fame and wealth. He was aquitted on molestation charges so anyone who calls him a pedophile doesn't know what they are talking about. His father never let him have a childhood. He was already singing in adult night clubs before he could tie his own shoes.Look at the other Jackson kids. They all had problems.

well, as far as i can see, if it was proven, then i guess i will have to hate the child molesting Michael Jackson.. because that is just sick.. But, still, those people are not celebrating Michael Jackson the pedophle, but they are celebrating Michael Jackson, the musician.. he may be a sickening dude(if it was true), still you can't deny that he gave the world some of the best music that we heard in generations.. let's just respect the MAN who created the music.. it doesn't mean that we forgot about the pedophile one though.. (if it was true..):-)

You people are horrible. Let the man die in peace. I never believed that he molested those little boys. The boy lied, and that was that. It's really ignorant to give so much controversy over someone who died. You sit here and talk about him the way you do, and it will come back to you ten fold. No one can disagree that he was amazingly talented and changed the world one song at a time, inspired many muscians creative sides, and he was a sensational dancer, which inspired other people to try and dance like that. He was impersonated on many shoes, for his court case, for molesting a little boy. There are tons of cartoon videos, of him. We will never really know if he did do it because the CHILD lied. end of story.

They did this tribute some years ago, why in the world are you covering it now. It's crazy that when people die, then all of a sudden people are like watch this tribute that happen like eons ago.

Oh darn it all to hell. My sweet little boy was looking so forward to play with Wacko Jacko's willy. Bet Jacko would Wack his wee-wee in the wee hours of the night...imagining this. Jacko would grab his crotch and go Ahouuu! Squeeze the tiny wee-wee....until its all juice up and ready to Weeezzzz.

Joke:

Sarah fawcett died, she went to heaven. God gave her one wish for all she has been thru. She wished that all the kids would live in safe and prosperous world.
Jackson falls dead!

Just to let you know izigg I have reported you as abuse. I think it is very disrespectful whether if you didnt like the guy or do like the guy to make the remarks you did. Have your accusations about Michael if you want. In all honesty for you glad someone is dead just shows you have no character at all and I hope if you have any kids that your kids do not grow up to have the negative effects you have on dead people or not. Get some help.

As for Michael Jackson I grew up listening to him. I wasnt a HUGE fan of his, but I did like some of his music. I am still in shock that he is gone as I am still with Heath Ledger. It wasnt much of a shock about Farrah Fawcett or Ed Mcmahon's Passing but still sad. They all will be missed! They were all Iconic people in their own ways.

Michael jackson, your 1982 Album triller is largest selling album of all time is forever a record... no one a singer to surpass this...

This just shows that Michael Jackson has touched the lives of millions around the globe for generations. Even in the most unlikely place, his music and dance lives on. His music gave these prisoners hope that even at their very negative social state, they could still contribute something nice to the world. To those people who keep on talking negatively against MJ or even at these inmates, beat it! Try to share a bit kindness first before throwing stones. Hail to THE KING OF POP! You are a legend so you live forever!

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
