Prisoners Of Love: The New Michael Jackson Tribute

Posted Sat Jun 27, 2009 3:41pm PDT by Billy Altman in Stop The Presses!

Talk about deja view all over again.

Earlier today, the 1,500 orange-jumpsuit-clad inmates of the Cebu Provincial Detention & Rehabilitation Center on the east coast of Cebu Island in the Philippines reprised their phenomenally popular 2007 viral performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" to honor the King Of Pop, who died Thursday. After that, they performed this touching new tribute:

The original four-minute Web-smash video, you may recall, stemmed from an experimental program started by local security consultant Byron Garcia, which added synchronized dancing to the prison's exercise programs in the hopes of spurring better attendance and more involved participation. And judging by the results, it was certainly a success, as Garcia's post of the convicts' conga lines cavorting a la Jackson and his legion of undulating undead became an immediate phenomenon, drawing over 24 million hits--a million of them in the 24-hour period following the news of Jackson's death.

Of course, "hit" would seem to be an especially appropriate word when discussing criminals--though judging from the, er,  résumés of many of the thespic inmates at Cebu prison, drug-related offenses do seems to be up there in shared "credits."

Were these guys and gals troupers? After getting the OK to proceed with the tribute performance, the 1,500 guys and gals of the Cebu company practiced virtually around the clock under the watchful eyes of not only their built-in audience of armed prison guards but also a professional choreographer hired by the prison to whip the company into "Thriller"-appropriate lurching shape.

And bless their paying-their-debts-to-society heads, the Cebu inmates have once again done their warden, the country, and, yes, the entire planet proud. As Michael Jackson, the fallen idol whose music helped these unlikely people gain international recognition, once noted, it doesn't matter if you're black or white, or living as a free person in society or inside a detention and rehab center in the Philippines. We're all people--and we are the world.

A fitting tribute. I'm so sick of the haters who can't have any respect for the dead. You people disgust me.

how is it that this person izigg is so intune with Michael Jackson, knows every bit about the man that he has attempted to take the place of God himself by condeming him to hell. People like this should have no voice (or fingers)

Izigg you should watch your words. Very mean of you.
I don't believe for a minute that Michael bothered any of those boys. That woman that brought the charges was also charged with welfare fraud and had other lawsuits against other people. She was very fake and took advantage of a kind person that invited her sorry son to his ranch. What a way to thank someone. MICHAEL will be MISSED!!

I can't believe people would leave such harsh comments about the King of Pop. He did so many things no one would ever dream of. I respect Michael Jackson and I hope the ones with bad manners learn to respect him and others as well.

MJ is responsible for more then 40yrs of influence on Dance music and charity work that Gates nor Oprah could ever amount too and paying off isn't a sign of guilt Janet anyone who has ever gotten a credit or discount for an inconvenience from any company has a pay off to stop you from bad mouthing or any other issue. So paying off a lying family is nothing especially when you have internet bullies with no talent like Parez Hilton orchestrating anything that gets them attention. RIP MJ

say what you want, that man broke barriers very few performers ever could and no one knows what happened between those kids and Mike except them and God so leave that man be so he can rest in peace

176. Frank -
It's a shame that he followed the same path as Elvis did with the drugs.
Let God judge his activities on earth.
May he rest in peace.

Michael may have had phycological issues. But I think each and every individual should take what they got from him which was great music. he was a legend and an icon. he will have his conversation with god. but who are we to spread hate? and to have no heart for a life is really sad. make the world a better place one by one

178. Edmond J -
Don't they have anything better to do??!! Like do good deed and help the poor?

179. Nessa -
WOW! I have posted so many comments...not even sure what to say anymore. What a loss of such a great artist who can never be duplicated...NEVER!!! R.I.P. - your gone way to soon.

YUP ALL THE HATERS HAVE NO RESPECT........... PLEASE U ALL NEED TO GET A LIFE!!!

IF HE WAS SO GUILTY, WHY DID THEY TAKE THE MONEY? MONEY SHOULDN'T MATTER IF HE WAS A PERVERT.

HE WAS A MUSICAL GENIUS SINCE 5 YEARS OLD.... GIVE HIM THAT.

Pinetop Perkins' 80-year career still going

AP
Fri Nov 27, 2009 4:03am PST

AP - Noisy crowds in smoky bars don't bother 96-year-old bluesman Pinetop Perkins. It's all part of his job. Most nights, after he snuffs out his menthol cigarette, Perkins slides onto the piano bench in some club and … More »
