Levi Stubbs, Top Among the Tops

Posted Fri Oct 17, 2008 4:08pm PDT by Billy Altman in Stop The Presses!
Sad news indeed that another soul music giant has passed. Just weeks after the death of Norman Whitfield--the writer/producer behind such classic hits as "I Heard It Through Yhe Grapevine," "Papa Was A Rollin' Stone," "War," and "Car Wash," it's just been announced that Levi Stubbs, the longtime lead singer of the Four Tops, has died in his native Detroit at the age of 72.

Possessing one of the most powerful and distinctive voices of any of the great singers associated with the Motown sound, Stubbs and the rest of the Tops--Lawrence Payton, Renaldo "Obie" Benson, and Abdul "Duke" Fakir--had a career that began back when they teenagers in the early 1950s, well before anyone even used the term "soul music." But soulful they were, and fairly jazzy too, pretty much from the moment they made their debut recording for Chess Records in 1956 under the name the Four Aims.

By 1963, they'd long changed their name to the Four Tops, and had gone through tenures at a variety of labels (among them Riverside and Columbia) without much commercial success. That year, though, longtime fan Berry Gordy Jr. signed the Tops to Motown, and a year later, after failing to win them listeners through his short-lived Jazz Workshop label, he gave them a chance to record "Baby I Need Your Lovin'," a song by then high-flying songwriters/producers Eddie & Brian Holland and Lamont Dozier. It became a major hit, and once listeners discovered the warm, pleading voice of Levi Stubbs and the rich collective sound of the Four Tops, the hits simply piled up: Beginning with that song, the Tops went on to register no less than 45 chart pop hits (52 on the R&B charts), with the last two coming in 1988. That's right: 1988.

Along the way were such evergreens as the chart-toppers "I Can't Help Myself" and "Reach Out I'll Be There," the latter being the 1966 classic that featured Stubbs, under the direction of the Holland-Dozier-Holland team, stretching out the syllables of his words a la Bob Dylan to give the song a suitably folk-rock-soul urgency. ("And your life's filled with much con-fyoo-jun, until happiness is just an ill-loo-jun.") Levi Stubbs was probably the only singer who could have pulled that off--the same way that he pulled off the voice of Audrey II, the gleefully carnivorous monster plant in 1986's movie musical version of Little Shop Of Horrors.

Stubbs' passing follows those of fellow groupmates Lawrence Payton (1970) and "Obie" Benson (2005). Only Fakir remains of this Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame quartet. But for any of us who can remember the goosebumps they got the first time they heard "Just Ask The Lonely," "Bernadette," or "Standing In The Shadows Of Love," or so many other of their memorable classics, the Four Tops--all of them--will always be with us.

And so it is that Levi leaves us with a hole in the heart of fans from every corner of the world.
So long as there is music, "I'll be there" to cherish the musical legacy that Levi, Lawrence, Obie and Fakir so generously bestowed upon all of mankind.

"For God So Loved The World That He Gave Us The Four Tops"

R.I.P. and God's Speed.

Growing up in the mid sixties, Motown was the music that had the greatest influence in my life. And Levi Stubbs and The Four Tops were the voice of Motown to me. "Just Ask The Lonely" still brings tears to my eyes. And today, we are all a bit more lonely with Levi gone, joining Lawrence and Obie. Rest in peace, all three. And thank you for all the great music you have left us to continue to enjoy.

There will never be a voice that could beg, entice and excite or shown pain as Levi's. Many Fri or Sat nights I spent at the Apollo watching shows and we always loved the Tops. All of the songs were good but when u hear Still Waters it moves something inside of u and then to feel the song when he sang When You Touch me. that is the ultimate Levi. We thank God for allowing us to hear his voice for me now at 63 yrs old it was and still is the music we grew up on learned to have special feelings for someone and dance dance dance. To Levi's family know that our thoughts and prayers go out in the atmosphere to u. Levi is now singing with all the other special singers that have left us here to miss them but we will always listen to their music until we leave this earth. SING ON LEVI!

To the family of Mr. Levi Stubbs and the original Four Tops...my family's condolences after one of the deepest, devastating, heartbreaking losses in Motown record history.
I have been a Motown music fanatic ever since I was a little baby in the late 1970's. Once again, my family's condolences. This is a HUGE blow to the music industry. From the Stevie Wonders to The Supremes to The Temptations to The Marvelettes and the entire
Motown Records family from my family to yours...God Bless you all (from the old school stars to the new school stars of Motown Records). Levi, Rest In Peace. The Four Tops Legacy will go on forever.
