The Buzz Log: Kelly Clarkson Cover Controversy Rocks The Web

Posted Fri Aug 7, 2009 1:15pm PDT by Claudine Zap in Stop The Presses!

Kelly Clarkson hasn't lost her voice. But she seems to have lost a few of her curves in her cover photo for Self magazine. The songstress is gracing the September cover of Self's "total body confidence issue." But is it all just lip service if the cover girl is being digitally covered up?

Self magazine admits it did airbrush the singer, but no more than they do every other cover model. The editor-in-chief argued, "Our picture shows her confidence and beauty."

Fine, but some are griping that Self magazine doesn't have the confidence to show the singer's real body-booty and all. A Fox blogger asks, "Was Kelly Clarkson overly Photoshopped?" then compares the cover pic with her recent more bodacious appearance on "Good Morning America."

One person who doesn't have a problem with her weight is Kelly Clarkson herself. She tells the magazine: "When people talk about my weight, I'm like, 'You seem to have a problem with it; I don't...I'm fine! I've never felt uncomfortable on the red carpet or anything."

Cover buzz has sent plenty of people to the search box looking for the real Kelly Clarkson. Queries on "kelly clarkson self magazine" soared up the charts 100% in the last 7 days, along with searches for "kelly clarkson pictures," "kelly clarkson photoshop," and "kelly clarkson photos."

Comments on the Fox blog ranged from the cheerful to the conspiratorial: While one person gushed, "Kelly rocked the cover"; another lamented, "Trying to sell a magazine with cheating on photo. How can you trust the magazine to help you when they are doing that."

One thing is for sure-suspiciously skinny photo or not, the Self cover is getting its share of the spotlight.

Maybe that cover photo was taken months ago before she gained weight. Magazines do tend to take the cover photos and other photos months before they put them in the assigned issue. She clearly doesn't look like this now. But either way she looks good.

I think if Kelly is happy with herself the way she is, then that's how she should appear on the cover. It doesn't need to be airbrushed. It takes away the "real" Kelly. She's beautiful the way she is. There's no need to make her look fake.

Who even cares about this really? And plus some of you are very ugly but yet you talk about other people looking ugly in my opinion she is pretty but i really just dont care she is a singer not a model .

64. hammer -
she looks hot but that not all that. she is a beauty.
great voice.god is good.

Why do these celebrities allow the magazines to do this? Kelly is one of those artists that i thought really could care less about what people think about her and her appearance but i guess i was wrong.

fat! there! minimum of 5 characters..

society is so stupid about a persons outer appearance. Kelly looks great and better than she did when she was skinny. A singer or performer should not be based on their outer appearance but talent. Who cares if she is a voluptuous woman. The world needs someone big to make it big as a star and be big is size and statue, to break the mold -like Ruben Studdard or a Meatloaf.... the size a a person doesnt make a person but there are just way to many of you fashion geniuses busy finding everyone elses flaws. Go Kelly Clarkson GO! I Love you girl! Keep on rocking just as you are!

Puerto Rican Princessa- sooooo true girl!!! im not skinny myself, but i still think shes very beautiful

69. Merman -
I love kelly clarkson. Her weight is fine to me, it won't change me buying her cds in any way....lol Perfect voice and everything. I would date her. If you want skinny go pick on peris hilton, lindsey lohan, hillary duff. My Ga leave this girl alone.

I really don't think people care about her weight, If some do though.... most people I think would say that she makes up for it in her vocal talent and could really care less...

I'd hit it.

Shes hot

72. Rick -
she is a singer and has a beautiful voice.

If she is happy GREAT!

the world puts too much pressure on how someone looks!

73. ThomasC -
Either way, it's PHOTOSHOP people. No one AIRBRUSHES photos for print anymore. I think she is fine either way. Oh, and like someone else said, every photo is retouched before print if nothing else to adjust for color correctness.

74. Asami -
I could care less what Kelly looks like, as long as she can sing, that's fine.

75. Randi -
She's a singer. It's not her job to be skinny or hot or whatever. I really don't understand what is going on with the music industry.

76. Marie -
I definitely see what Maggie sees! If you're so confident, why hide or minimize what you have NATURALLY?

Not so "confident" after all, eh?

77. Yahoo! Music User -
It's OK she is from Texas and everything is ....

78. Travis -
The only reason the media is writing about it is because it sells things. It isn't a problem for her and anybody who has a problem with it does have a problem but it isn't her wieght!!!

79. Brandy -
The magazine should be ashamed of themselves. It once again tells women it isnt ok to be bigger when sorry to tell them but bigger is just as beautiful. Seems to me the few comments i have read you all seem to miss the point. It doesnt matter how good she looks it matters that the magazine felt the need to minimize the size that she really is which is an insult to Kelly Clarkson. Whats the message be skinny or be elsewhere???

80. Yahoo! Music User -
iT SHOULDN'T MATTER!
SHE'S GORGEOUS EiTHER WAy, AND AS LONG AS SHE'S COMFORTABLE WiTH HERSELF...NO ONE ELSE SHOULD CARE.
