May 25-June 1: Spector's Spectacle, Susan's Boyling Point, Brown's Blunder

Posted Fri May 29, 2009 3:34pm PDT by Lyndsey Parker in That's Really Week

While American Idol continued to make news more than a week after its finale--as evidence of an AT&T vote-tampering "scandal" in winner Kris Allen's home state of Arkansas came to light, and runners-up Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken amusingly feuded in the press--there were far more serious headlines this week, the first having to do with legendary-producer-turned-convicted-killer Phil Spector.

On Friday, the 69-year-old "Wall Of Sound" innovator learned he will likely live out the remainder of his life within the walls of a maximum-security prison, when he was sentenced to 19-years-to-life for the second-degree shooting murder of actress Lana Clarkson. He was also ordered by Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler to pay $16,811 in funeral expenses, $9,740 to a state victims' restitution fund, and other fees.

Speaking in the courtroom right before Phil's sentencing, Lana Clarkson's mother, Donna, stated: "I'm very proud of Lana, proud to be her mother. No one should suffer the loss of a child."

We offer our condolences to anyone and everyone in the Clarkson and Spector families affected by this tragedy.

Also in the courtroom this week was Chris Brown, when his superstar attorney Mark Geragos unsuccessfully attempted to file a motion to receive police and investigative records related to Chris's Rihanna assault case. This court appearance only made Chris's new YouTube video, posted the day before, even more puzzling.

On Wednesday, Chris chose to break his more than three-month silence in possibly the most ill-advised manner possible, in an amateur, poorly lit, and frankly kind of unsettling webcam video clip apparently shot on a whim while he was chilling with his buddy Bow Wow. Oddly, about 30 of the video's fleeting 37 seconds were devoted to promotion for Chris's upcoming music. ("I just wanna say, what's up? Because I ain't been out there in a minute. New album will be coming soon. We're working on it right now. Called Graffiti. Got everything on it, know what I'm sayin'? I'll be ready for that. I'm about to drop a single this summer for y'all. So we ain't going nowhere," Chris said in the clip.)

Only at the end of the video, as a seeming afterthought, was there any vague reference to Chris's recent domestic abuse scandal. "Everybody's that's haters, they just been haters," Chris added. "All my real fans, I love you all. I ain't a monster." But his tone was hardly remorseful, and the clip probably did little to polish up Chris's tarnished golden-boy image or convert any actual haters out there. He probably only made it harder for Mark Geragos--not to mention for his publicist, manager, or any other spin-doctors in his camp who've been working damage-control overtime since his infamous Grammy-weekend altercation with Rihanna--to do their jobs.

Note to Chris's entourage: Keep that kid away from a camcorder until this case is closed.

Meanwhile, as Phil Spector prepared to do hard time and Chris Brown possibly provided ammunition for the prosecution in his own case, rapper T.I. began serving one year and one day in an Arkansas low-security penitentiary on a weapon charge. The night before he went to jail, he performed a farewell concert in his native Atlanta and told the crowd, "See y'all in 366 days." And so, for the next 366 days, T.I. (whose real name is Clifford J. Harris Jr.) will be known as Prisoner No. 59458019.

In other music-related reality news...yes, American Idol is over, but Simon Cowell's big TV hit on the other side of the pond, Britain's Got Talent, is gearing up for its finale this weekend. However, the show's frontrunner, dowdy opera singer Susan Boyle, may be headed for a meltdown that could ruin her chances of winning.

All this week, U.K. tabloids were positively bursting with reports that the 48-year-old Scottish overnight celebrity, feeling pressured as the talent show reaches its climax, experienced an expletive-riddled meltdown at London's Wembley Plaza Hotel in front of 150 shocked party guests, after watching BGT judge Piers Morgan rave about fellow BGT contestant Shaheen Jafargholi during a semi-final episode. Of course, a spokesperson for the show denied that Susan actually freaked out and stormed out, saying: "Susan was watching the show in the bar with the contestants' families at first. But she was getting hassled by a journalist, so went to watch the rest of the show in a room with four friends."

But then reports surfaced that Susan was considering quitting BGT entirely because she could not deal with the stress of newfound fame. Piers actually told U.K. program The Early Show that Susan "threatened to leave...because of the amount of pressure on her." Later on his blog, Piers said he was "very, very angry" and ordered Susan's detractors to leave her alone.

"She has been in tears many times during the last few days...she's had to read stories and columns, and listen to radio and TV phone-ins, calling her arrogant, insincere, spoiled, fake, mad, and so on," Piers blogged. "Susan Boyle has never experienced anything like this and is like a frightened rabbit in headlights...Anybody who has gone through that transformation is going to be feeling the most unbelievable pressure. You could see the nerves almost crippling her on the semi-final show and I just think it's time that everyone slightly backed off."

It remains to be seen if Susan will be able to keep her nerves under control when she competes against Shaheen and other finalists on the ultimate Britain's Got Talent showdown this weekend.

Speaking of freakouts, and Britain, fanatical followers of the Brit synth band Depeche Mode freaked out when it was announced that iconic Mode frontman Dave Gahan had a cancer care this week. The band, who just released a new album titled Sounds Of The Universe, had to cancel some of their overseas tourdates when Dave was hospitalized earlier this month with a severe bout of gastroenteritis...but then, while he was undergoing gastroenteritis treatment, Dave learned he also had cancerous tumor in his bladder. Luckily, surgery to remove what doctors called the "low-grade" malignancy was a success, and Dave is expected to make a full recovery in time for a Depeche Mode summer tour starting June 8.

"Dave Gahan sincerely thanks his fans for their support, understanding, and patience," the synth-pop gods said in a statement. "Depeche Mode deeply regret any problems or inconveniences the cancellations and postponements may have caused."

We here at Yahoo! send many heartfelt get-well wishes to Dave.

Unfortunately, a much sadder fate met with former Wilco guitarist Jay Bennett, who died in his sleep last Saturday. He was only 45 years old.

Jay played with Wilco during the formative years of 1994 to 2001, leaving the Americana band because of a fallout with group leader Jeff Tweedy (against whom Jay had recently filed suit for $50,000 in alleged owed royalties). As of this writing, the cause of Jay's death was still unknown, pending further coroner testing. We send our deepest condolences to the Bennett family and the Wilco fanbase. Jay Bennett was a great talent and will truly be missed.

And on that sad note, thus concludes another week in music news. Come back next Friday for more headspinning headlines, and until then, goodnight and good music.

To everyone who says - "He didn't kill her, just hit her". Umm not really. Its not like he slapped her, or punched her once. Allegedly, he BIT her, beat her face till it was hard to recognize, and strangled her till she passed out according to the reports. Abuse like this just gets worse and worse until someone is dead. Of course then you'll probably just say she deserved to die. No wonder the world is the way it is with this toleration of violence. And to all the people that think she is stupid for going back to him. She isn't stupid, she probably has battered wife syndrome. She might think it was all her fault or be terrified what he would do if she left him. She has convinced herself that he has changed. Anyway, just my opinion.

If you do the crime than you do the time Chris Brown, maybe others will learn from your mistakes, seems you should be getting professional help and not making another album and if you do make another album the money should go to abuse women , somehow you need too be taught that you can't abuse people and move on, forgive me is not good enough, one day you might end up a muderer like Spector, what goes around comes around, always remember that you have to pay for your so call mistakes.

First of all, the real video isnt even 37 seconds long. Its not a Youtube video, either. Its Justin,tv, and its about 11 minutes long. The video wasn't intended as an apology. The channel was Bow Wow's and he was just going to show him hanging out with his buddy Chris Brown, bowling. Chris Brown wasn't really talking in the video, until Bow Wow mentioned that Chris had a new album, and Chris just reacted on that. He probably felt really awkward, so he mentioned the fact that bloggers were saying he had a black eye. So he called them liars, said the haters part, then the video went back to bowling. I'm on neither Chris Brown or Rihanna's side, but I'm definitely not on bloggers side, because they lie. What he did was wrong, and that's why he's going to jail. Excuse him for wanting to have a life in between court appearances. I actually believe we shouldn't be in his business anyway, just listening to celebs music or watching their movies. But that's really not possible with the media. Go to Bow Wow's channel at justin.tv/princebow to see the real video.

Attention all of you racist and uneducated people; especially "Kevin M": I don't normally participate in any of the blogs that are posted on yahoo because of the simple fact that most of the people who participate in them are rude and love to believe in the hype of a one sided story. Now I am BLACK, chinese, and white. I don't appreciate when someone says and I quote,"Oddly enough i didn't think blacks owned computers. Sadly i realized what else are they going to steal from our homes they can't take our 52" big screens so they take our laptops and post retarded blogs! (ya feel me bruddah)". Have you ever heard of white people stealing, killing people, breaking and entering, saling drugs, and or etc? Ok so Chris Brown beat her or not; we don't really know the whole truth! I will be the first to say abuse of any kind is wrong!!! But when you are put in a situation where emotions are raging, one does not know how they will act and one would be a huge liar to say that they do! It's 2009 for crying out loud! America, stop being so judgemental and get on with your lives! There are far more important things in the world than putting down someone just so you can feel better about yourselves. Pray for Chris and anyone else who has done bad things. People can change but they need a helping hand. Remember no one is PERFECT and I mean no one! Have a blessed day everyone. Fyi, my screen name is spelled the way that I wanted it to be spelled. The actual spelling is louis vuitton! I know how to spell Kevin.

171. Staci -
im not really that old...only 15 and ive been a fan of chris brown since i was in 3rd grade wen he first appeared on the music scene. although i may be young i still know the difference between right and wrong. there is no excuse for what chris brown did. and those of you who r trying to make exuses for him should be ashamed. i know everyone makes mistakes and should be forgiven for them or given another chance but that still doesnt excuse what he did.....there are consequences for every action.

172. Yahoo! Music User -
There's some pretty dumb comments in here. Now, I'm not a big fan of Chris B but I do like some of his music...and just because I listen to his music DOES NOT mean I condone his actions. But then again,,, it's not like I know the guy personally or hang out with him. I can't only judge his music because that's all I'm interested in...the rest is HIS LIFE. Half of all artist/musicians/singers/bands you name it use drugs so since they are you shouldn't listen to their music either...come on...stop judging people..let God do it.

173. Staci -
...all im saying is that everyone deserves a second chance but that second chance cannot be given until that person has payed the price for thier screwup or at least made an honest attempt to right thier wrong

174. Staci -
the guy Don who left the message 28 minutes ago about his uncle in jail... ar you racist or something? because it seems to me that ure saying all black people or at least black men are animals. do u even know ALL black men? no u dont, so how can u say they are all animals? im sure there are sum that are but i could say the same about a number of white, asian, iranian, asian men OR women...u name it

175. Michael -
Yahoo.com your're site should close, !@#$* what's Phil Spector's prisoners number, you mutha!@#$%

176. Yahoo! Music User -
brian h ..dude this is america and also as a person you should have the right to speak, talk or whatever as you please...it has nothing to do about labling people by saying they're from the ghetto or hood..english changes everyday. There is no right or wrong way to speak...dat was very dumb of you!!!!his english is not the problem!!there are more serious issues in the world....just Stupid!!!

177. Yahoo! Music User -
Don is a racist S**T!!!

178. Krys -
Hold on let me regroup!!!Don ...how can you make a border line judgement! Its like saying all dogs are mean and bit ppl.It leads me to look at you as a person...the mirror tells the truth about who we are when we look into it...so before you judge anyone..you need to take the time to look in the mirror and figuare out the type of person you are..Ask yourself am i a narrow minded person..who has only one interpitation of everything I see..who makes judgements of the cuff, and fell to see the person in the mirror.True jugdement walks in a mans shoes and checks out his reasons for doing what he does..if you are going to be judgemental first juge yourself..and i'm sure there are a few things that need correction in you life..So! I say this to you..to avoid being Stupid myself..because my point is Think before you open your mouth or you might convict yourself with the same judement you judge other! Be blessed my brother

179. How Dare You -
OMFG. Why in hell would retarded ugly gay Chris Brown do a crappy video tryin to sound hard when everybody knows he's a lil gay punk. First he has no business trying to promote an album after the mess he is in. Then he needs to learn how to talk. He sits there with his boyfriend bow wow? for what? This guy needs to stick a fork in hi ass because he is done. Only fans he has left is stupid little ghetto knocked kneed girls who are use to seeing boy's beat on girl's and they dont even care that he tried to murder his gf. Lock his ass up and throw away the key, and stop buying his lame no talent music, he sounds like Micky Mouse!

180. Escorpiona -
I feel like this:
Chris Brown is young and has some personal issues to address. In this situation is very hard to make a judgement b/c he is also very talented. REGARDLESS of his skin color/race, what he did was very wrong. BUT, what he did has NOTHING to do with his talent or music. I love his voice and his music. I'm not going to stop listening to him b/c he had an altercation with his girlfriend. Let's kept it real people. How many of us(YES I'm Including MYSELF!), have had fights/arguments with our partners and done stupid things??? MOST OF US have. They were drinking and (probably smoking and NOT cigarrets!) at some party and whatever triggered the fight must have been REALLY Bad. Also, As we know, this is NOT the first fight they had in a year. He had hit her before..and guess what?? SHE STAYED!. Come on!.. Seriously. Granted he was an complete [profane] for beating her like a punching bag.. (Obviously he's got ANGER ISSUES!, we all know someone like that!) Rihanna is Beautiful, talented, not to mention RICH!!! and with access to all types of resources!. Most abused women stay because 1) They are afraid, 2) Have no where to go, 3) Have no MONEY!!, 4) Have no way of protecting themselves in case the guy goes after them. Rihanna has BODYGUARDS and once again she's RICH!. I feel that Chris should definetely address this situation and stop acting like NOTHING happened. This is a bad sign period, and he can escalate and kill someone (and it doesn't have to be a woman!). Seek counseling and admitt the mistake.. and then MOVE ON!..Keep singing and do what you do best. ENTERTAIN!. He is NOT the first famous singer/actor/whatever! who's done this.. So please stop acting like he is a terrorist and should be banned from the freaking face of the earth. I'm sure you all know someone who's been in this situation. Difference is Chris Brown and Rihanna are famous, so they get prez and attention. That's all. Why are you all so mad at him anyways.. RIHANNA already forgave him and talks to him on a regular basis. Let them deal with their problems privately and lets' move on to some really important news.. ugh!
